Hello YouTube, Please Come In, Make Yourself at Home

YouTube bigger than BBC

As if we needed any more confirmation that rich media is the hottest ticket on the Internet.

Heather Hopkins has just released new figures showing that within days YouTube will be more popular than the BBC.

Just wait till G figure out how to really monetise that sucker…

Enterprise Ireland Podcast - eMarketing

Some time ago I was asked by Enterprise Ireland to participate in their very first podcast.

Enterprise Ireland podcast - eMarketing

It’s great to see an organisation the stature of EI embracing podcasts, and I think a great example of how you can use rich media as part of your overall online strategy.

The topic of the discussion is eMarketing, and if you would like to listen in to the conversation between Cathy McGovern (inspiration.ie), Fergal O’Byrne (IIA) and myself you can listen to and/or download the full podcast (or smaller excerpts - great example of ‘letting your customers consume how they want’) on the EI website:

Enterprise Ireland eMarketing Podcast

A large part of the discussion centred around SEO, and I think there is some fantastic material in there for any company looking to formulate and/or implement an online strategy.

The discussion was chaired by Ralph Averbuch (ENN), and I’d like to thank Eoin O’Sioichru and Karen Hynes of EI for very kindly asking me to participate, and Fergal and Cathy for the great conversation had.

If you do listen in I’d love to hear what you thought of the discussion. All comments very much appreciated.

Sudden Visitor and Rankings Drop - When Your Site Falls Out Of The Sky

Your site has enjoyed good rankings and lots of visitors for a long time. All of a sudden you visits drop by 60% overnight. The first thing you look at is your analytics. It’s still not clear what the problem is. You check your rankings and you’ve been hammered across the board (and I mean hammered). Penalty? But you haven’t done anything wrong…. to the best of your knowledge.

Well, yesterday the above happened to me. I was making a few changes to try to make Wordpress a little lees hungry.

Not sure what happened, I decided to login to Google Webmaster Console. And there was the answer:

Google Webmaster Console

It’s incredible just how quickly Google has removed results that may not be useful due to resources not being available. In this case my rankings should return fairly quickely after Google re-crawls my site.

If you haven’t already signed up for Google Webmaster Console I strongly advice you do so - it can save you a tonne of hassle.

PS - thanks to Paul at eirjobs for letting me know about the errors my site was spitting out.

Monday Round-up

Yeah, yeah - I know. Usually you get a round-up on a Friday. Well, I’ve never been one for convention (’thinking outside the box’ I think it’s referred to).

Some Bits ‘n Bobs

So here are a few things of interest should you find yourself with a few moments to spare:

1. Jason Roe is looking for a few minutes of your time to complete a survey on co-working. If you work for yourself co-working is a great idea, so head on over and fill in his quick 2 minute survey [that’s a direct link to the survey].

2. I’ve made up my mind to go to Paddy’s Valley. Well sort of. Just have to work on my schedule. If you’re wondering what the heck is Paddy’s Valley - here ya go. And Damien is hoping to get some some ideas for accommodation in Silicon Valley, so if anyone has any ideas/experience perhaps you could leave a comment over there please?

Paddy

3. Alastair (aka ‘Trojan’) has come out of the closet with his new and improved logon.ie. Logon is a new Irish Internet Marketing company with a fantastic corporate image. I don’t know about you, but I think site and the message are both excellently defined. I think the future is going to be very bright for Logon.

4. I got a sneak preview of Blacknight’s new website - you gotta love those spoilt designs. That’s coming soon.

5. What about me (I don’t hear you say  )? Well I’ll be back in Ireland for 4 weeks from June 25, so if you’re looking for an Irish Internet Marketing expert I have some windows opening up shortly so why not get in touch.

Well there’s my Monday round-up. I’m sure I’ve probably missed something in there. Anyhows, happy Monday to everyone
