Dam breach: lego men in danger by the flood...

03:12
How Lego toys help understanding the world: This is an experiment in my garden showing how a dam or dike would collapse when water rises: not because waterlevel is raising higher than the dam, but because the dam is sliding down due to water pressure in the sand.... Watch the lego men falling down... The film has been edited by my 7 year old son, using the youtube editor, isnt it great? ;-) Check out our blog: http://watersandlego.blogspot.nl/ This is most likely the way how most dikes along rivers collapse: not by overtopping, but by water pressure weakening the dam... making the dike slide down.... Lego sea turns into quicksand beach! Fishing gone wrong...

03:09
These 2 lego guys went fishing. They found a nice island beach to stay and rest. Suddenly... the water level declined, the sea disappeared! They explored the surroundings, climbed a hill and then disaster strikes... The quicksand gets alive, a sinkhole opens right under their feet! The boat was part of an old Lego City Pirates set, still one of the best floating ships of lego. Our Water, Sand and Lego play table at the World Port Days Rotterdam

01:59
Our river stream table was exposed at the World Port Days in Rotterdam. Lots of children AND adults play with the sand and water. In the mean time they learn about new ways of sustainable maintanance of the Dutch rivers: maintaining a good shipping channel without dredging, using nature's forces. Can it be done?

Digging a well automaticaly with ordinairy tools

00:55
I made a well in my garden by hand: I dug in a 4 meter 50 cm diameter tube, by using dredging techniques to get the dirt/sand out and hammering to get the tube further in. This part shows how water and sand mixture is pumped out, the sand deposits, and the water flows back in.

Digging a well by hand in my own backyard!

00:51
I made a well in my garden by hand: I dug in a 4 meter 50 cm diameter tube, by using dredging techniques to get the dirt/sand out and hammering to get the tube further in. This is the first chronicle of my attempt to hand dig a small irrigation well on my place here in Holland. The cost of having it dug is about $100 for the PVC pipe so this is in part an attempt to save money and part because I love to see if I can do stuff like this on my own. I am not encouraging you to undertake such a project but if you are I hope my experiences might provide you some insight. The conditions of my soil might not translate to yours. If your water is within 10 feet of the surface I see no reason this could not be accomplished as a project of your own. Know your own laws and limitations. I added some annotations in English, desscribing what happens here, since I speak in Dutch ;-) check out the next video to see how it's almost in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ss4-PQWvnE
