The ST Math visual approach: Linear Equations, a Guided Animated Tour

Dr. Matthew Peterson describes and illustrates the "visual first" problem-solving approach to learning math. This tour concentrates on a small sample of fifth grade and middle school algebra readiness problems involving linear equations. The program introduces math concepts without the use of language, symbols or numbers, so students can focus on solving problems and understanding the concepts behind mathematics. Once the students are proficient at solving the visual algebra problems, we slowly introduce the language, numbers and symbols. The problems get more and more symbolic, but remain in the context of a visual situation that has a functional meaning to the student: getting JiJi across the screen. What are Schemas?

A schema can be conceived as a scaffold, a blueprint, and a representation that describes an object, a string of events, or an idea, but also feelings, and essentially anything that can be experienced. In math education, we are especially interested in establishing schemas for several reasons. For example, a schema for fractions can allow us to automatically manipulate numbers in fraction space, without investing precious brain power every time a fraction is encountered. One of the benefits of having a strong fraction schema in place is that you can use the brain power not needed to understand fractions to solve other problems for which a schema has not yet been established. MIND Research 2014 Math Fair:  At the Square Root of Fun (Short)

On Aug. 2, 2014, 4,200 children and families flocked to the Math Fair: At the Square Root of Fun, a free, day-long event hosted by the MIND Research Institute at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, California. Visitors of all ages played with math concepts through hands-on games, exhibits, workshops and rides. Children solved puzzles, designed and built their own games, explored symmetry with lasers and mirrors, used interactive classroom technology to help performers solve a puzzle in the Mystery Math Theater, played with open-source 3D printed mathematical curiosities and much more. More than 300 volunteers, from college students to professors and engineers to Disney Voluntears, were on hand to interact with guests at each exhibit and facilitate learning experiences.
