The entire point of marketing your small business is to bring in sales. So, is your marketing campaign working?

There are a lot of mistakes that you might be making, but as long as you have the basics down, you should be able to see higher sales. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind for your marketing.

Know your target audience. If you created a product without anyone specific in mind, you`ll probably make a few sales, but nothing like you would if you focused on a very specific portion of the market.

Understand your competition.
Ignoring the competition isn`t going to give you any edge, so be sure you pay attention to this area. By looking at what they are doing, you can adjust accordingly for better marketing.

Marketing isn`t just about blindly advertising, it requires strategy, so be sure to understand what you`re doing and why you are doing it.

You need to make people feel something strongly in order to start viral marketing. Whether this is a good or bad feeling, strong emotions make for hot marketing. If you`ve said something to incense a group of people, you can be sure it will make the rounds in no time at all. All you need to do is apply this to your marketing to get the best use of it.

However, wild passion might burn through a few marketing milestones, but if you are making an appeal to the audience`s mind, as well, you`ll find that they will take it even further and what starts out as a simple viral marketing campaign can go sky high.

Appeal to both emotions and mind with your marketing and it could very well end up being a viral marketing plan.

PPC: Creating Relevant Landing Pages

If you`ve ever clicked on an ad only to end up on a website that appears to have nothing to do with what you clicked on, then you know how bad an idea it is not to optimize your landing page. Pay per click advertising can be very effective if you do it right, but even getting relevant traffic isn`t going to help if people are going to be confused when they reach the landing page.

For each targeted PPC ad that you put out there, you need to make sure that it leads back to a page that will give people what they want. For example, if you are targeting one ad at teachers and another at parents, having them end up on a page that appeals to firemen isn`t really going to do the trick.

Your landing page should also fit with what the ad is about. Using cryptic language on the your advertising will only result in a confusion once the person arrives at the landing page. The chances that they`ll click away are very high and you`ll end up paying for too many clicks that don`t give you anything in return.

Pay per click can be very useful. Just make sure that your landing page is appropriate for the ad and you`ll boost your conversion rate.

Podcasting for Email Addresses

Email addresses are what you need if you want to really capture people`s attention and maintain it. Everyone knows that the money is in the list and it doesn`t matter what business you are in, you can always benefit from an email list.

Podcasting is an excellent way to gather email addresses. You can give your visitors a small clip of audio, plus a run down of what will be included in the full podcast. All they need to do in order to listen to this educational and any other useful podcast in the future is sign up with their email address.

You`ll need to be sure not to abuse this email address, since that`s a sure way to lose your potential clients. Keep emails short and informative and you`ll end up with far more people who stay subscribed to you. Podcasts on a regular basis can also help maintain subscribers.

Keeping your podcasts informative and not particularly long (15-20 min.) is the best way to ensure people stay interested. Make it worth their while to hand over their email address.

PR for Small Business: When to Go Pro

You can do a lot of the PR for your small business on your own. Often it`s fairly easy to get some extra publicity for your company, whether you want to hire ghostwriter to do your press releases or write them yourself.

There are many ways to publicize your business, but when you are successful, you`ll need to move on to other things and let a pro handle the PR. There simply isn`t enough time in a day for a business owner to do everything on their own, so outsourcing things like PR is a very smart move, allowing you to focus on the more important parts of running the business.

When should you start outsourcing PR? In my opinion, as soon as you can afford it. You`ll end up with far more publicity if someone is dedicated to this task only and will have more experience in it. They can maintain a constant presence while you are working on other things and this can only benefit your business.

PR is a very important part of ensuring that your small business continues, but it`s also something that can take up a lot of time if you don`t outsource. Having someone else take care of it will free you up.
