In this video, we will discuss about reloading data into cache automatically when data in the underlying database table has changed. Please watch Part 131, before proceeding with this video. To load data automatically into cache, when cached data is removed, we need to define a callback method. This callback method will be invoked when the respective item is removed from cache. So, the code to reload and re-cache data can be written in this method. The callback method signature should match, with the signature of "CacheItemRemovedCallback" delegate. The call back method is defined below. public void CacheItemRemovedCallbackMethod(string key, object value, CacheItemRemovedReason reason) { string CS = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["DBConnectionString"].ConnectionString; SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(CS); SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter("spGetProducts", con); da.SelectCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; DataSet ds = new DataSet(); da.Fill(ds); CacheItemRemovedCallback onCacheItemRemoved = new CacheItemRemovedCallback(CacheItemRemovedCallbackMethod); SqlCacheDependency sqlDependency = new SqlCacheDependency("Sample", "tblProducts"); Cache.Insert("ProductsData", ds, sqlDependency, DateTime.Now.AddHours(24), Cache.NoSlidingExpiration, CacheItemPriority.Default, onCacheItemRemoved); } Now, create an instance of "CacheItemRemovedCallback" delegate, and to the contructor pass the name of the callback method, that should be executed automatically when, the cached item is removed. CacheItemRemovedCallback onCacheItemRemoved = new CacheItemRemovedCallback(CacheItemRemovedCallbackMethod); In Part 131, to cache data, we used cache object's, Insert() method that takes 3 parameters, as shown below. Cache.Insert("ProductsData", ds, sqlDependency); Instead, let's use the overloaded version that takes 7 parameters and pass "onCacheItemRemoved" as an argument for "CacheItemRemovedCallback" parameter. Cache.Insert("ProductsData", ds, sqlDependency, DateTime.Now.AddHours(24), Cache.NoSlidingExpiration, CacheItemPriority.Default, onCacheItemRemoved); That's it. We are done. Now, please run the application. When "Get Data" button is clicked for the first time, the data is loaded from database. Once the data is loaded into cache, we always get it from cache when we click "Get Data". Now, execute an update statement on the database table. Notice that, when we click "Get Data" button now, we still get data from cache, but notice that, the updated data is loaded.

Migrating Real-World Million-Line Code Bases to Java 7: Lessons Learned

53:48
"In enterprise development, migrating to a new version of Java can be a complex endeavor. However, the swift adoption of Java 7 by the community enables a smooth transition, if you plan ahead and take one small step at a time. In this session, you'll hear about Info Support's experiences with successful migrations on several large enterprise projects, such as the Dutch Railways planning system, a complex, million-line code base. The presentation shows real project statistics on performance and productivity improvements because of Java 7 and addresses several topics for migration: tools, frameworks, and language changes. It also discusses approaches to incrementally upgrading in a multiteam environment and how to minimize risk and effort." Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Predicting Horse Race Winners Using Advanced Statistical Methods

17:03
Conditional Logistic Regression with Frailty applied to predicting horse race winners in Hong Kong. http://www.helios.ai Since first proposed by Bill Benter in 1994, the Conditional Logistic Regression has been an extremely popular tool for estimating the probability of horses winning a race. I propose a new prediction process that is composed of two innovations to the common CLR model and a unique goal for parameter tuning . First, I modify the likelihood function to include a "frailty" parameter borrowed from epidemiological use of the Cox Proportional Hazards model. Secondly, I use a LASSO penalty on the likelihood, where profit is the target to be maximized. (As opposed to the much more common goal of maximizing likelihood.) Finally, I implemented a Cyclical Coordinate Descent algorithm to fit the model in high-speed parallelized code that runs on a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), allowing me to rapidly test many tuning parameter settings. Historical data from 3681 races in Hong Kong were collected and a 10-fold cross validation was used to find the optimal outcome. Simulated betting on a hold out set of 20% of races yielded a return on investment of 36.73%.

High scale in-database modeling in Greenplum with R

01:01:54
Greenplum is a massively parallel relational database platform. R is one of the top languages in the data scientist/applied statistician community. In this talk, I'll give an overview of how they work together, both with R on the desktop and as an embedded in-database analytics tool. It'll be a variation of a talk recently presented at the UseR 2012 Conference. Hong Ooi graduated from Macquarie University with a BEc in actuarial studies, then worked with NRMA Insurance/IAG in Sydney for many years. Completed a Masters in Applied Stats from Macquarie in 1997, and a PhD in statistics from ANU from 2000-2004. Displayed impeccable timing by switching jobs to St George Bank on the eve of the global financial crisis. Moved to Melbourne in 2009, before joining the Greenplum data science team in 2012.

Practical Performance: Understand the Performance of Your Application

44:41
This session discusses how you can maximize the performance of your application deployment with tools that are native to your server platform as well as cross-platform Java analysis and monitoring tools. The session begins with systematic steps you can take to locate a performance problem in a complex system and moves on to analysis you can do to understand the root cause of the problem. The picture is completed by consideration of the tools and techniques available to monitor application performance in normal operation so that you can catch performance issues before they build up into serious problems.
