Take Tesco's classic green pesto for example. It contains as much fat as a Big Mac burger. WeightWatchers sauces have at least a teaspoon of sugar per 100g, which is in the same league as Dolmio. Do we see either of these companies stepping up to do something about it two years before Sugar Tax is enforced though? No. Mars Foods have taken it very seriously and made a very bold move as a big brand to do something about it, two years before they even need to. The problem is that in a bid to make their brands look more healthy, many of the big food brands are replacing sugar for artificial sweeteners, which is probably more carcinogenic than the sugar they already have in them. The branding of these products is massively important however, because they need the products to look so appealing that people don't even think to look at the label. People trust what they see on the package. Even when they do look at the labels, they don't really understand what they are looking at. This isn’t just a health disaster waiting to happen. They are affecting the taste and people then turn from being brand fans to brand critics who never touch their products again. That’s what Miles and I call BRANDALISM! If you look at the greatest brands of all time, they built strong reputations that were born to STAND OUT and stick by their values. For Mars to stand their ground and say - "Hey, we're not going to change our recipes, because they are the best they can be and we have a strong brand for a reason. Yes, 5% of our product portfolio are higher in fat to maintain their authentic taste, but we’re encouraging you to be responsible about how often you eat them”. This is a great brand message. It means they keep the integrity of their company, the integrity of their product and the integrity of their relationships with their brand fans. Many brands of all shapes and sizes could do with learning from them. All in all, Mars have created an extremely positive brand message if loyalty and brand advocacy is what they are looking for! I'm often asked to explain what a brand or branding is and its sometimes easier to say what it isn't first because so many people have varying ideas or views of what branding is. The things that come up most commonly is that people think a brand is a logo or website or letterhead or a piece of packaging, but those things aren't the brand, they are just the visual identifiers or badges associated with the product or service. A brand is the meaning we give to a product or service, how we feel about something in our hearts and minds. Its the story, the personality, the promise a brand makes to meet our expectations in certain ways, the collection of experiences we have every time we engage with a brand through the product, its services or people that work for it, that all collectively make up what a brand is. So if for example when I'm running one of my Mastermind Branding Workshops and I ask people to list or talk about brands they love and why they love them, some of the ones typically mentioned include Apple and McDonalds. Participants talk about Apple as 'cool, really great and easy to use, innovative, premium, love the genius bar, great interaction to meet customers needs, and they sometimes talk about it being secretive too. Or McDonalds - simple, easy, enjoyment, a quick treat for the family with menus, toys and activities that are kid friendly. If I draw an apple or the golden arches, they identify the brands straight away but the things that really get people talking are how those brands make them feel and the experiences they associate with the brands from when they've been using or experiencing them. Interestingly they don't talk about Apple in terms of technology or gigabytes or McDonalds in terms of just burgers and chips. So when you think about it its pretty amazing what those brands have achieved. They've got people all around the world feeling something similar about their brands, a collective shared sense of similar feelings and associations. They've given those brands a meaning (rationally and emotionally) that all their target audience identifies with and values. It all sounds very ambiguous but when you think about it brands live in people hearts and minds and branding is the activities engaged in by the brand owners to help people feel they way they do about those products or services all of which gives them a compelling reason to buy, repeatedly. So I apply that thinking in terms of well • what does your brand stand for? • what do you want to be seen as in the world? • what do you want to articulate to express your brand’s mission and purpose? • what do you want your style of interaction to be? • what's your positioning? and • how do you want people to feel about you? • what do you want people to tell other people about you? We then drill that down to creating your brand story, your brand values, your brand promise, mission, vision and purpose. These are the foundations, the heart of creating a brand, the key ingredients of what underlays and provides the direction and strategy for how your brand looks or sounds in terms of its name, logo, copywriting, website and customer experiences. It's only when you address those brand fundamentals that you can start look at design, aesthetics, logos and branding strategy to get your message out into the world. Without this you're attempting to market something that has no meaning and if it has no real meaning it's not going to attract your ideal audience or command a premium. Thats what a brand and branding is all about. Know thyself - So what does this mean? From my understanding, It means that as a small business owner, you need to know what you believe in and what your values are. Doing so will help establish your brand identity and help drive your business in that direction. 2) Know your competition - You need to know what you are up against. According to Charles, this is very important and something a lot of small business owners don’t do - guilty!!! Now the aim of doing this is not to copy your competition, but to help you understand what they are doing that works and what isn’t, and then use that knowledge to improve your own business. 3) Know your customer - I feel that this is one of the most important aspects of running a business, and as obvious it sounds, I find it one of the most difficult things to get right - especially if you’re just starting out But knowing who your ideal client is, allows you to be effective at finding them, market better to them and hopefully go on to sell to them. Now, because of how important I feel this is, I’m gona be bringing an expert on the show to shed more light on it. So look out for that episode real soon. 4) Create a solid brand message - From my understanding, every business should have brand message.
