2.5 M Sea Level Rise? Why We Need Climate Action Now

Sea level around Halifax and Nova Scotia is moving faster than ever, according to U.S. scientific evidence. Boris Worm, a marine biologist at Dalhousie University, explains why addressing climate change now is cost-effective and can significantly reduce the impact. Move too slow on climate and the effects on sea level rise could be catastrophic. Waters of Paradise - Adapting to Climate Change in the Maldives

11:33
The Maldives is one of the wonders of the world. Located in the Indian Ocean and made of 1192 coral islands, it is also the world’s lowest lying country. The highest natural point is just 2.4 meters above sea level. Today, one of the main problems for Maldivians is water. And it is likely to get worse with Climate Change. While Northern islands face drinking water shortages during the dry season, from April to May, most Southern islands face a different problem: flooding. The United Nations Development Programme with support from the Green Climate Fund is supporting the Government of the Maldives, to ensure that most vulnerable islands have year-round access to potable water and that they can cope with floods on their own. Nearly half of its population lives in Male, the capital of the islands, in less than 1.4 square kilometers. The rest is spread over 186 small, scattered islands. Maldivians have lived for centuries from coconuts and fishing. There are no rivers or streams on any of the islands. Except for Malé and a handful of other islands, most islands rely on rain for drinking water. Islands affected by floods and shortages of potable water receive relief from the capital island Malé. Transportation costs are high with the Maldives scattered geography. This makes emergency relief very expensive for a government already struggling economically. Climate change is expected to bring stronger storms, and longer periods without rainfall. A rise in the ocean’s temperature and acidification has had devastating effects on coral reefs, affecting tourism and fisheries, both critical to the livelihoods of most Maldivians. Damaged reefs also function less effectively as a first line of defense against sea swells and flooding. Until the nineties, Maldivians used groundwater for drinking. But over the past decade, the groundwater of most islands got contaminated. The freshwater lenses of most islands was badly affected by the Tsunami of 2004 and poorly planned urbanization. As a result, today, rainwater, together with water produced using desalination and expensive bottled water are the only potable water options. In the past ten years, the National Disasters Management Center in Malé had to send emergency shipments of water to about half of the 186 inhabited islands during the dry season. An expensive solution that sometimes can take up to two weeks to arrive. Most households have one tank of 2500L and fill it by collecting rain from their roofs. Bigger families might even have 2 or 3 tanks, since one is not enough for them to make it through the dry season. When water supply ends, households cope by borrowing from neighbors, by buying bottled water or by receiving water relief from Male. HIGH AF CABLE CAR TO THE PEAK: 1,327 M ABOVE SEA LEVEL | Mt. Fuji Tour

04:29
DISCLAIMER: I thought I had really nice shots during our trip BUT NAH. HAHHAHAHHAHAHA The local tour company ran out of slots for the Mt. Fuji tour on my birthday (September 4) so we had to reschedule to the next day (September 5). Unfortunately, though, we still weren't able to get a nice photo of Mt. Fuji because, as the Japanese like to say, "It's shy!" I think I caught a glimpse of it for like three seconds, whatsoever, but I wasn't able to take photos HAHA Anyway, on this tour we climbed (in the motor coach) the 5th station of Mt. Fuji, had a little souvenir shopping, had Japanese-style lunch afterwards, and then cruised Lake Ashi to get to the Komagatake ropeway. There we took the 7-minute high af cable car to get to the peak, which was 1,327 meters above sea level! #Tokyo2017 Music: David Cutter Music - Sunroof https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH6FTFbdNvg Follow David Cutter Music: https://dcuttermusic.bandcamp.com/ Gold Panda - In My Car (http://vevo.ly/2xnA3G) No copyright infringement intended.

Sea Level Rise; Are we all gonna drown? The truth about sea levels is...

16:33
Sea Level Rise; Are we all gonna drown? There are a lot of dire predictions on the net about sea level rise. Most of these are based on global warming and melting ice caps yet these are not the major causes of sea level rise. What is? Currently we are seeing a 2.4mm/year rise in sea levels. Over 10000 years this will equate to just 24 metres. Sea level rise refers to an increase in the volume of water in the world’s oceans, resulting in an increase in global mean sea level. Sea level rise is usually attributed to global climate change by thermal expansion of the water in the oceans and by melting of Ice sheets and glaciers on land. Melting of floating Ice shelfs or icebergs at sea do not raise sea levels. Sea level rise at specific locations may be more or less than the global average. Local factors might include tectonic effects, subsidence of the land, tides, currents, storms, etc. Sea level rise is expected to continue for centuries. Because of the slow inertia, long response time for parts of the climate system, it has been estimated that we are already committed to a sea-level rise of approximately 2.3 metres (7.5 ft) for each degree Celsius of temperature rise within the next 2,000 years. IPCC Summary for Policymakers, AR5, 2014, indicated that the global mean sea level rise will continue during the 21st century, very likely at a faster rate than observed from 1971 to 2010. Projected rates and amounts vary. A January 2017 NOAA report suggests a range of GMSL rise of 0.3 – 2.5 m possible during the 21st century.

03:41
The second single and title track from the forthcoming debut album by Eamon Joseph. Lyrics below. Piano, Vocals and Guitars: Eamon Joseph Recorded and mixed by James Reynolds Mastered by Alex L'estrange Artwork by Pedro Fernandez Ilustracion LYRICS: Here we go, I'm at sea level relative to joys and devils can you measure it all? Wanna feel the joy of floating, get talked into high-speed boating doesn't answer the call Pedalling to feel the breeze, but shaved all hair below my knees yeah you gotta slip through the sprawl But I can change this rollercoaster, whiz around where I'm not supposed to that's the thrill of it all What's good for goose and gander now tends to meander, I weigh half a dozen tons Keep my head above the water I can't stand the thought of doing what they want Here we go, I'm at sea level relative to joys and devils Can you measure it all?

Sea Level Rise Is Already Causing Regular "Sunny Day" Flooding

01:41
This past July, in a Congressional hearing on “The Status and Outlook for U.S. and North American Energy and Resource Security,” retired Marine Brigadier General Stephen A. Cheney offered a dire warning for many current military bases in coastal locations. “From the tactical side our bases and stations on the coast are going underwater. Norfolk [in Virginia] is the prime example. It’s closed dozens of times a year now because of flooding both from rain and sea level rise,” Cheney explained. “We’re going to have to talk about relocation of our bases and stations that are on the coast.” Cheney also made it clear that he believes in climate change. “Climate change is already affecting security both at home and around the world, so we must make sure that we take the greenhouse gas emissions from energy into account, lest we trade increased energy security today for a warmer, more unstable world in the future.” Though climate science denial is the rule in the White House, some Republicans who represent coastal districts have been swayed by the recurring floods. Representative Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) represents southern Florida, where the region's regular flooding has him convinced that climate change is happening now. “Sea level rise and the risk of severe flooding are a reality for communities across the country,” Curbelo said in a statement in response to Trump rolling back the regulation. “This Executive Order is not fiscally conservative, it's irresponsible, and it will lead to taxpayer dollars being wasted on projects that may not be built to endure the flooding we are already seeing and know is only going to get worse.” The draft climate report recently published by The New York Times estimates that sea level rise of 4 to 7 inches is “very likely” by 2030. This would make a noticeable difference in southern Florida. The same draft report estimates a potential for up to 8 feet of sea level rise by 2100. That would eliminate a lot of Rep. Curbelo’s district. The city of Miami has been very proactive in dealing with the very real issue of sea level rise and is spending approximately a half billion dollars on new pumps to address flooding. Despite this investment, a recent heavy rain storm, combined with high tides, left streets flooded. The Washington Post reported it as an “absurd” amount of rainfall. However, similar “absurd” rainfall events have happened recently across the country, including one that flooded New Orleans — another city staring down the reality of sea level rise. As the scientific evidence continues to warn us of devastating sea level rise and the military counsels us that coastal flooding is shutting down naval bases, it doesn’t seem like many people — including the U.S. President — are taking it seriously. Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay sits on the leading edge of this issue. Bay waters have steadily eroded away the land on which this small community has lived for hundreds of years. Since the 1850s Tangier has reportedly shrunk in size by about two-thirds. The Army Corps of Engineers has estimated that the island might have as little as 25 years left. But the islanders famously don’t believe in sea level rise. And the President has told them not to worry about a thing. Residents of Tangier are pretty confident that erosion, not climate change, is the cause of their woes, as island resident Lonnie Miller explained to Public Radio International. “So are we going to get more street tides, tides on the street?” Miller asked “Yes. But is it global warming? No.” This “head in the rapidly washing away sand” approach has opened up the residents of Tangier Island to ridicule from some — but aren’t they just doing what much of the rest of the country is doing? Asking for a wall to keep the ocean at bay while not acknowledging that the ocean is rising? Perhaps not surprisingly, the mayor of Tangier Island is a Trump supporter … but not scientist. “I’m not a scientist, but I’m a keen observer,” Mayor Eskridge said. “If sea-level rise is occurring, why am I not seeing signs of it?” His island is literally being washed away by sea level rise and he can’t see any signs of it. And yet while he can’t see signs of sea level rise, he is asking for the government to pay for engineering solutions to protect his island — from sea level rise. David Schulte, a marine biologist with the Army Corps of Engineers, explained the situation to The New York Times last year, saying,“The Outer Banks, the Delmarva Peninsula, Long Island, the Jersey Shore — they’re in the same boat. It’s going to just take a little longer for them to get to where Tangier is now.” Learn more: https://www.desmogblog.com/2017/08/24/retired-general-our-bases-coast-going-underwater-sea-level-rise
