What is STRUCTURED PRODUCT? What does STRUCTURED PRODUCT mean? STRUCTURED PRODUCT meaning - STRUCTURED PRODUCT definition - STRUCTURED PRODUCT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In structured finance, a structured product, also known as a market-linked investment, is a pre-packaged investment strategy based on derivatives, such as a single security, a basket of securities, options, indices, commodities, debt issuance or foreign currencies, and to a lesser extent, swaps. The variety of products just described is demonstrative of the fact that there is no single, uniform definition of a structured product. A feature of some structured products is a "principal guarantee" function, which offers protection of principal if held to maturity. For example, an investor invests $100, the issuer simply invests in a risk-free bond that has sufficient interest to grow to $100 after the five-year period. This bond might cost $80 today and after five years it will grow to $100. With the leftover funds the issuer purchases the options and swaps needed to perform whatever the investment strategy. Theoretically an investor can just do this themselves, but the cost and transaction volume requirements of many options and swaps are beyond many individual investors. As such, structured products were created to meet specific needs that cannot be met from the standardized financial instruments available in the markets. Structured products can be used as an alternative to a direct investment, as part of the asset allocation process to reduce risk exposure of a portfolio, or to utilize the current market trend. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 434 (regarding certain prospectus deliveries) defines structured securities as "securities whose cash flow characteristics depend upon one or more indices or that have embedded forwards or options or securities where an investor's investment return and the issuer's payment obligations are contingent on, or highly sensitive to, changes in the value of underlying assets, indices, interest rates or cash flows". The Pacific Stock Exchange defines structured products as "products that are derived from and/or based on a single security or securities, a basket of stocks, an index, a commodity, debt issuance and/or a foreign currency, among other things" and include "index and equity linked notes, term notes and units generally consisting of a contract to purchase equity and/or debt securities at a specific time". Structured product business, as a key part of customer-driven derivatives business, has changed dramatically in recent years. Its modern setup requires comprehensive understanding of: Prevailing regulatory environment, the impact of existing and forthcoming regulations including MIFID II, KYC, PRIIPs - KIDs, etc; Principles of risk-based capital/liquidity requirements specified by Basel 3, FRTB, etc; Structured product manufacture process, effective derivatives business value chain linking trading, structuring, quantitative modelling and risk management; Structured product distribution channels, product wrappers, impact of e-platforms; Structured product payoff features and their risk characteristics; Real-life quantitative pricing models able to handle multi-curve environments, volatility smile/skew, etc. The risks associated with many structured products, especially those that present risks of loss of principal due to market movements, are similar to risks involved with options. The serious risks in options trading are well-established and customers must be explicitly approved for options trading. The U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) suggests that firms "consider" whether purchasers of some or all structured products should be required to go through a similar approval process, so that only accounts approved for options trading would also be approved for some or all structured products.

The world of finance has a dark side, but that's only half the story
You could say that the field of finance has an image problem, with both fictional and real-life figures projecting greed and other less-than-likeable attributes. That’s why Mihir Desai has written a book, "The Wisdom of Finance," to balance the picture and appeal to those in the field to get back to the core ideas. Economics correspondent Paul Solman reports.

What is an Arbitrage?
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Arbitrage”. Arbitrage occurs when an investor simultaneously buys and sells an asset in an attempt to benefit from an existing price difference on similar or identical securities. The arbitrage technique enables investors to self-regulate the market and aid in smoothing out price differences to ensure that securities continue to trade at a fair market value. Given the advancement in technology it has become extremely difficult to profit from mispricing in the market. Many traders have computerized trading systems set to monitor fluctuations in similar financial instruments. Any inefficient pricing setups are usually acted upon quickly and the opportunity is often eliminated in a matter of seconds. Arbitrage is basically buying in one market and simultaneously selling in another, profiting from a temporary difference. This is considered riskless profit for the investor/trader. In the context of the stock market, traders often try to exploit arbitrage opportunities. For example, a trader may buy a stock on a foreign exchange where the price has not yet adjusted for the constantly fluctuating exchange rate. The price of the stock on the foreign exchange is therefore undervalued compared to the price on the local exchange, and the trader makes a profit from this difference. How does Pay later work in the UK
Pay later lets you try before you buy. It's available to all customers over the age of 18, with a billing and delivery address registered in the UK. Here's how it works: At any supported store, browse for your product and add to your basket as normal, then select Pay later. Not sure about the size or colour for your item? Add it all and only keep what you love. We perform a soft credit check and look at other factors such as order amount, frequency and store to make an instant decision on the order. This doesn't impact your credit score and is only visible to Klarna. To give yourself the best chance of being accepted, you should have your order delivered to your registered billing address. You should have a good history of paying your bills, and it can help to be registered to vote at your billing address. Once you've placed your order, you'll receive an email from Klarna within 2 days with payment instructions. You'll get 14 or 30 days to pay depending on the store. You don't need to pay right away, wait until the goods have arrived, try them out and then head to klarna.com to make a payment if you decide to keep them. We send a reminder two days before your payment is due, and you'll also receive a reminder on the due date. If you decide to make a return, as soon as the store has received the items we'll send a new summary with the updated amount and due date. If you've already paid for items you've returned, we'll issue a refund to you automatically. And remember, Pay later is completely free. That means no interest and no fees. Enjoy! Visit the shop directory to see where you can use Klarna today: www.klarna.com/uk/shop-directory

Can Coty finance a deal for Avon?
"So far, the analysts I've spoken with have given a low probability to this deal happening," explains Richard Collings, The Deal Pipeline's consumer and retail reporter, regarding Coty Inc.'s second rejected bid for Avon Products Inc. Collings asserts that this is due to the uncertainty into whether the beauty products heavyweight will be able to raise the cash to attract Avon, differing business models and other obstacles. - Sarah Hashim-Waris

How Expert Are Expert Stock Pickers?
In this first video in our Personal Finance section of Macroeconomics -- and also our new course on Money Skills -- we’ll begin to lay out some smart rules for investing. Today, we’ll tackle Rule 1—ignore the expert stock pickers. What’s the basis of that rule? Well, in his 1973 book, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, economist Burton Malkiel made a controversial claim. He claimed that a blindfolded monkey, throwing darts at the financial pages, could select a basket of stocks that would do just as well as a set chosen by the pros. One of Malkiel's later students, the journalist John Stossel, set out to test that claim. Stossel did throw darts at the financial pages. The darts landed on 30 companies. Turns out, Malkiel did have it right—the randomly-selected stocks did better than professionally-picked ones. The point here is, random picking roughly gives you as good results, as trusting the pros. Consider—in most years from 1963-2008, the S&P 500 Index outperformed most of the managed mutual funds. And in a different study, researchers took the top 25% best-performing funds. Two years later, less than 4% of the original set remained in the top quarter. Five years later? Only 1% stuck around. Basically—past performance doesn’t guarantee future results. Chance often tends to win out. To show you what we mean, take a hypothetical set of 1000 experts making market predictions. Let those predictions be based on a coin toss. Experts who land heads will say the market will surge this year. Those who land tails say the opposite. At the end of the experiment’s first year, 500 of the 1000 experts will have been right, solely by chance. Now, say the remaining 500 toss again. At the end of the second year, 250 experts will have been right, again by chance. Continue with this logic, and by the end of the fifth year, roughly 32 of the 1000 will have been right, five years running. Perhaps these 32 will be hailed as geniuses, but remember, they only came about through a coin toss. So, what’s to conclude from this? Two things. First, luck and chance matter. In some cases, it can be hard to differentiate luck from skill, as proven by the “genius” 32. Second, no need to spend big bucks on a money manager. After all, the studies prove that random picking often works just as well as professional management. That said, what if you did have market information? What if you knew something about certain stocks, that made you think they'd do well? Could you beat the market then? That’s what we’ll answer in our next video, when we tackle the efficient market hypothesis. Stay tuned! What is an Index?
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Index” An index is a group of securities chosen to track a particular investment theme such as market, asset class, sector, industry, even strategy. Generally the goal is to accurately represent the risk-return profile of that theme without necessarily holding every security that might qualify. The exact compilation of securities in an index is known as its basket, while the proportion of the index each individual security comprises is its weighting. An index’s value is a single number that, when referenced to a starting value, describes how the index has performed over time. For example: The FTSE 100 is an index designed to track large-cap stocks; its basket includes the stocks of the hundred largest companies on the London Stock Exchange, weighted by market cap. On August 9, 2013, its value was 6574.34. The logic behind indexing is simple: representation. Markets or even individual market sectors can be enormous, including hundreds and even thousands of securities. For most market participants, buying up all these securities just to access one market or trend is too expensive and time-consuming—not to mention ineffective, as that approach inevitably would include securities with negligible influence on the portfolio. An index is comprised of only the securities most relevant to its investment theme, allowing market participants to follow market trends without having to track the entire available universe of securities. Essentially, an index acts a yardstick, capturing representative exposure to a particular market or sector. The Standard & Poor's 500 is one of the world's best known indexes, and is the most commonly used benchmark for the stock market. Other prominent indexes include the Dow Jones and the Nikkei as well as the FTSE. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy

And the Tiara Goes To: A Julie Albright Movie | Julie Albright | American Girl
At school, a beauty pageant is coming up, but basketball superstar Julie doesn't think she's the pageant type. That is until her mom shows her an article about a Miss America whose prize money paid for law school. Soon after, Julie signs up. She's quickly embarrassed when Amanda, Alison and Angela mock her talent -- fancy dribbling. Still, Julie remains true to herself, especially during the interview portion. She wins 1st Runner Up, but feels like the winner when her best friend Ivy reveals how Julie inspired her to think differently. Written by Lisa Kohn & directed by Melissa Hoppe. Selected in large measure on the power and beauty of her short film Stealth, Melissa Hoppe is a Student Emmy- and Humanitas Award-winning creative producer and storyteller, who is also experienced in line producing. Her look book revealed her thinking about the details in Julie's room contrasted with Ivy's room, while here treatment highlighted strong creative connections to Julie's character and overarching storyline. Melissa comes from a finance, business, and theater background, and in addition to film, she produces and directs series for the web and TV. An American Girl fan since childhood, she's been driven to empower girls since she began playing with Samantha at the age of 10. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Incorporating also the more recent history of stock markets all over the world, he elaborates on the puzzling size of the equity premium. very high historical return of stock market investments. After introducing the notion of an Efficient Portfolio Frontier, he covers the concept of the Tangency Portfolio, which leads him to the Mutual Fund Theorem. Asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP) conduit to securitize r
Notable features of the ABCP include: 1. Cash flow mismatch between receivables (without maturities, non interest bearing) and commercial paper (CP) notes issued to investors (floating-rate, with maturities) makes the credit and liquidity support critical. 2. It is a "continuous conveyance" vehicle: the conduit (special purpose entity) is purchasing receivables and issuing CP to investors on a rolling basis.
