What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. If you are interested in delving deeper into this topic more, here are a few books on the topic: * Quiet -- Susan Cain. A must read whether you are an introvert or extrovert * The 4 Dimensional Manager: DISC Strategies for Managing Different People in the Best Ways -- Julie Straw * Crucial Conversations -- Patterson, Grenny, McMillian, Switzler * Working Together: A Personality-Centered Approach to Management, Isachsen, Berens * Drive -- The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink Need someone to walk your executive team through a day on understanding leadership styles? Jane Hyun explains the importance of changing management style to fit an evolving workforce. Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript: So, flex is the art of switching between leadership styles in order to better effectively communicate with people who are different from you, so different from you generationally, culturally and across the gender divide. It's about stretching your leadership style and not fundamentally changing who you are and about adapting to the people across from you so that you can get the best results. Well, the workforce is changing and has been changing for a number of years. I believe multicultural workers make up 36 percent of the population. Women make up nearly half of the workforce and I think make up something like 70 percent of buying decisions and certainly millennials are increasingly a bigger part of the workforce as well. And so there are so many demographic changes that are impacting our workforce. I don't know if managers are always certain about how to work with this new workforce, how to better engage and motivate these new workers that are entering into the workforce. In addition to that there's a cost of not flexing. So for example, I think the Gallup study last year said something about 450 to $550 billion of loss due to disengaged employees. So you might have employees that you've hired into the organization that maybe had one foot out the door, that really don't feel motivated and engaged and don't feel like the organization is really speaking to them. And so for this and many reasons I think there's such a business case and an opportunity for an organization to create a value proposition for their employees if they can get this right. The power gap is a pretty critical element in the art of flexing. The power gap is the amount of social distance that exists between yourself and people who are in positions of authority, and if you're the manager the distance that exists between yourself and your team members. So you can have a small power gap or a large power gap. If you have a small power gap, it's more of an egalitarian relationship where even as a manager you see yourself as more of a coach or as a guide and you have a very informal relationship with your colleagues. If you have a high power gap and you're the employee you see your leader as maybe more of an authority figure and there's a huge gap between yourself and that corner office. And so the way that we see the power gap play out in the workplace is pretty important. And as we think about the art of flexing, understanding the dynamics of the power gap, particularly as it relates to generational and cultural differences, can play a big part in your effectiveness. So, as you work across these differences your goal then is to be a fluent leader. And a fluent leader is someone who can effectively manage those differences in the workplace to get the best business results. One of the traits of the fluent leader we found, and there's many traits, but one of the things that we want to focus on today is innovation and an ability to really see outside the box and bring out the voices of people who are on your teams who have different perspectives. And so I think of one example in Douglas Conant who was a former CEO of Campbell Soup Company, he spent some time as a CEO really looking at how do we increase customer engagement. He was hired at a time where some of those numbers were slipping and he really wanted to look at what were some of the voices that we really can connect to that haven't been heard to before. And so they spent a few years really looking at the voice of the woman customer. How do we make decisions about our product lines and service lines that can appropriately reflect what they're looking for? And he worked with Denise Morrison, who is now actually the CEO of the company, to come up with some ideas. And from those conversations the Healthy Request line was born. And so when I think about his example I think about how he bridged the power gap to flex his style, to ask the opinions of people who are always there but perhaps their voices weren't heard in the loudest form. And I love the fact that he incorporated those voices into the day-to-day business of how he ran the company. Directed/Produced by Jonathan Fowler, Elizabeth Rodd, and Dillon Fitton

What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety — especially in an uneven economy — means taking on big responsibility. Just as women and men often have different types of leadership styles, they may gain visibility in different ways. Visit https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com to book Joel to deliver this motivational speech or seminar for your employees: “The Invisible Leaders: How to Find Them and Help Them Shine.” He’ll help both men and women in any workplace learn how to become more proactive about increasing their visibility. In today’s workplace, both men and women should be aware of the following points: • Men are often more geared toward being assertive. • When women voice ideas, they often don’t get the same level of recognition that men do. • Women can find a competitive advantage by doing some extra legwork. Males tend to be more geared toward being assertive, which is why they often model a type of leadership with a more authoritative style. They sometimes have an unfair advantage when it comes to perception, too. Many women can share stories of how a few minutes after they shared a great suggestion in a meeting, a man shared it again and got the credit for it. This may happen partly because of how assertive the man was in presenting the idea, and partly because of how his audience perceives him. Males often have an unfair advantage in the workplace for this reason. If you’re a woman, the more proactive you can be about making yourself visible, the better. You may have to work harder than most men, but using these tools can help you gain level footing and then surpass your competition. Rather than getting mired in frustration when those moments happen in meetings, commit to taking initiative. Commit to ensuring your own success despite the odds. The road won’t always be easy, and you will experience more of those frustrating moments, but in the long-game, you will win. Especially in male-dominated environments, it’s important for women to learn how to find a competitive advantage. Working through these challenges may in turn inform a woman’s leadership style. One type of strategy that women often use in leading others is transformational leadership, which focuses on listening to and empowering others. Visit https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com to learn more about a motivational speech or seminar by Joel will help your employees learn to work through the challenges they face in their careers, forging a path to achieving their dreams. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚑ SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL ⚑ • Subscribe to my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/joelgarfinkle * JOIN MY NEWSLETTER * • 1-min read full of best practice articles, famous leaders profiles & 2-min inspiring videos. • Sign-up and receive FREE e-book 41 Proven Strategies to Get Promoted Now https://garfinkleexecutivecoaching.com/fulfillment-at-work-newsletter ♛ SUBSCRIBE TO MY BLOG ♛ • Subscribe to my Career Advancement Blog: https://careeradvancementblog.com/ ★ KEYNOTES / CORPORATE TRAINING / WEBINARS ★ • Joel Garfinkle is sought-after keynote speaker, corporate trainer and online webinar facilitator https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com ✔ EXECUTIVE COACHING ✔ • Joel is one of the top 50 executive coaches in America. You exchange information. You need to have the right responses to the employer’s questions. You need to ask good questions. You need the right background. You need to impress. 1. It’s about their future, not your past. You need to get the interviewers, the most senior interviewers, thinking into the future. If you can't get them to imagine what their life will be like and what their company will look like with you there, you'll never get hired. 2. Leaders are inclusive and inspiring. You need to be the high tide that lifts all the boats. Leaders build more leaders. They don't build more followers. You need to show them you're great at inspiring and inclusive. You're great at building teams. 3. Stay away from one-and-done questions because then you’ll be done. Specifically, I mean asking a great question, then receiving their response, and then moving on to the next question. That's the big mistake! The message you're sending to them is that you are a puddle skipper. You are not somebody who's digging deep to get information and collecting it all. You're not well researched. You’re not digging deep enough to get the information you need to make a good decision. -------------------- ABOUT ANDREW -------------------- Andrew LaCivita is an internationally recognized executive recruiter, award-winning author, trainer, and founder and chief executive officer of milewalk and the milewalk Academy. About this presentation In this in-depth talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust. In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal well-being. Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an "authority" versus a true "leader." For more on this topic, check out Sinek's latest book Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't now available for pre-order. About Simon Sinek A trained ethnographer and the author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Simon Sinek has held a life-long curiosity for why people and organizations do the things they do. Studying the leaders and companies that make the greatest impact in the world and achieve a more lasting success than others, he discovered the formula that explains how they do it. Sinek's amazingly simple idea, The Golden Circle, is grounded in the biology of human decision-making and is changing how leaders and companies think and act. His innovative views on business and leadership have earned him invitations to meet with an array of leaders and organizations, including Microsoft, Dell, SAP, Intel, Chanel, Members of the United States Congress, and the Ambassadors of Bahrain and Iraq. Sinek recently became an adjunct staff member of the RAND Corporation, one of the most highly regarded think tanks in the world. He also works with the non-profit Education for Employment Foundation to help create opportunities for young men and women in the Middle East region. He lives in New York, where he teaches graduate level strategic communications at Columbia University. True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right. And if you have the skill and dedication, you can reach the pinnacle of leadership-where experience will allow you to extend your influence beyond your immediate reach and time for the benefit of others. The 5 Levels of Leadership are: 1. Position - People follow because they have to.2. Permission - People follow because they want to.3. Production - People follow because of what you have done for the organization.4. People Development - People follow because of what you have done for them personally.5. Pinnacle - People follow because of who you are and what you represent. Through humor, in-depth insight, and examples, internationally recognized leadership expert John C. Maxwell describes each of these stages of leadership. He shows you how to master each level and rise up to the next to become a more influential, respected, and successful leader.

http://www.ampli.com/ Hotel managers have the task of ensuring customers are satisfied and overseeing all of the different activities and departments of a hotel: banquet hall, restaurant, conference center, tourist attraction, fitness center, spa/wellness center, and more. Here are the Top 10 Tips for Managing a Hotel: 10. Build and lead a great team. As a hotel manager, you are only as good as the team around you. That is why forming and fostering a great team is of utmost importance. Focus on developing a company culture that reflects the goals of the company. Connect with workers and be present in the life of the hotel. As a manager, a compliment and a smile go a long way to developing a positive team environment. 9. Always learning and improving. Hotel managers are often a jack-of-all-trades because their position forces them to be: business manager, recruiter, teacher, trainer, cleaner, crowd controller, bartender, the list goes on! 8. Greet your guests. The classic rock song Hotel California's lyrics captures the power of a good first impression of a hotel manager, "There she stood in the doorway // I heard the mission bell // And I was thinking to myself // This could be Heaven or this could be Hell." 7. Be Prepared for Emergencies. The Radio Hailer Emergency Communication System Because the availability of electricity is not always an option during these situations, it is important to have a communication channel that is not dependent on electricity. A battery-powered Portable Public Address System is the perfect option. The Radio Hailer Emergency Communication System from AmpliVox allows users to communicate over a mile and to an audience of up to 5,000 people, while the Safety Strobe Megaphone will record your emergency message and play it back amplified. 6. Strategic Business Relationships. Whether it be offering guests coupons to a local restaurant, offering discounts through tourist destinations, or partnering with local universities and corporations, strategic business relationships can be a powerful way to ensure a constant stream of people are coming through your doors. 5. Be internet savvy. There are several reasons why hotel and restaurant management professionals need to be web savvy. 1. Hotel Marketing: All hoteliers want to know how to better market and brand themselves. Using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, & YouTube is great way to connect with potential customers. An example of a useful YouTube video is to make a two-minute video that captures the top 5 reasons your hotel rocks! Make your website locally optimized for search. This is an easy way to connect your hotel to those looking for a hotel in your specific area. Submitting your hotel's address and website on Google Maps and Places will pay dividends for years to come. 2. Customer Service: More and more hotel reservations are booked online. For the convenience of your guests, offer online booking, and make sure your hotel is listed on sites like Expedia, Kayak, and Priceline. Connect your hotel management system to your online booking program and you are able to automatically build an email list for email marketing. 3. Reputation Management: Often times a small fraction of customers who had a bad experience are more likely to write a negative review than the overwhelming majority who had a great experience. This can pose to be a problem for those in hotel and tourism management. 4. Have the right equipment. Hotels need to have the right hotel supplies to be able to maintain their business and daily activities. It is important to have a hotel management software systems, transportation for airport shuttles, the right lecterns and podiums in your conference room, and the right public address systems within the hotel. The Victoria Solid Hardwood Multimedia Lectern from AmpliVox is the perfect addition to any meeting or conference room. The classic style, multimedia functionality, optional built-in sound system, and portability makes the Victoria a favorite among hoteliers and presenters alike. 3. Boundaries. 2. The customer is always right. Always! Listen to complaints and don't just fix them, fix the root problem behind them. Turn the weakness into a strength by using the complaint as an opportunity to improve the way your hotel functions. Do everything you can to turn an upset guest's problem into a good story they will want to share of how you went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their good experience. 1. Have fun! As a manager, it may seem like you have a never ending list of things to do. Enjoy your guests, enjoy your staff, and enjoy your work.

It can feel like a rigged game. Executives set aggressive, game-changing goals, so managers drive their teams to burnout trying to deliver. Or, employees seek connection and support, so managers focus on relationships…and fail to make the numbers. The fallout is stress, frustration, and disengagement, and not just among team members—two-thirds of managers report being disengaged. Winning Well offers managers a practical alternative-- blending the bottom line with the human spirit.
