This is the first and only filmed biography about Cesar Ritz, inventor of modern hotel business. It is the story of a peasant boy in a remote mountain area and thus starts there, in the place he grew up in, Niederwald. The film follows Ritz’ way to Paris, Cannes, Rome and London. Finally, the film ends in the clinic where Ritz spent his last days, back in Switzerland. The film features interviews with family, friends and experts: the directors of the Ritz in Paris and Rome, a follower of the chef Escoffier, and Jacques Tardi, an artist specializing in the “Commune de Paris” and thus knowing the Paris of the Ritz period particularly well. The technical progress was the main inspiration of the ingenious inventor. Cesar Ritz was every bit like the fuming and effervescing locomotives of his time that pulled him across Europe, from capital to capital, to the hotels of the Ritz Company, resembling themselves huge machines. The big challenge (and at the same time the charm) of the film stems from the fact that our protagonist belongs to an epoch long bygone. We are thus trying to revive this time with various visual aids. The atmosphere that Ritz created with his concept of the hotel business was based on illusion: in the hotel, everything is deamlike, a world apart: luxury, small and greater extravagancies, everything served to create a fairy tale. The guest is to pass from reality into hi own, sumptuous dream. The entry hall, the saloons and the suites of the Ritz hotels transmit a special, almost unreal ambiance. It revives the era od Cesar Ritz: the Paris Ritz as well as in the St. Regis Grand in Rome (another of his hotels) have lately been restored like historical monuments. This spirit and this accuracy help to reawaken the taste, the genius and the philosophy of Cesar Ritz. Registering 4.3% compound annual growth rates over the past five years, the hotel industry may be celebrating as Rome smolders. A new urgency has hit the sector. In 2015, AirBnB booked nearly 80 million room nights and nearly $1 billion in revenues—that’s 80 million nights that were not booked at a Marriott, Hilton, or the like. Airbnb is the fourth most-visited Travel destination online, with 80 million unique monthly visitors to its global sites. The industry’s response has been further consolidation in contrast to digital innovation. Last year, Hyatt broke ranks, investing $40M into OneFineStay, an upscale Airbnb rival headquartered in London. The mobile phone has been the weapon of choice for disruption in the industry. 31 percent of total digital travel sales in the U.S. were booked via mobile in 2015, and are estimated to grow to 46 percent by 2019. With 91 percent of Luxury Hotel brands offering a mobile-optimized site experience, and 74 percent offering a mobile app with booking capability, the focus is shifting to advanced mobile capabilities. 45 percent of Index brand apps now offer mobile check-out via app, yet only 16 percent offer keyless entry, and just 15 percent allow guests to order room service or other amenities. Genius brand Marriott lays claim to the number one spot as Hilton slips to number two in this year’s Digital IQ Index: Luxury Hotels. Marriott earns the top spot with its Travel Brilliantly microsite that sources ideas from guests, a sophisticated mobile app and its recently launched Marriott Traveler Online magazine. Global online travel sales reached $400 billion in 2013 and will grow 10 percent a year to $670 billion by 2018, mostly fueled by China. To-date, Luxury Hotels’ investment in digital does not match the opportunity. The result? Firms that are now worth more than many of the hotel and airline companies whose seats and rooms they fill. Only eighty-four percent of Luxury Hotel brands offer a mobile-optimized site experience. And just forty-five percent offer a branded app. The mobile offerings facilitate basic room reservations, however more advanced functions including mobile check-in/check-out, keyless entry, and room selection have experienced slower adoption. The 2015 Digital IQ Index®: Luxury Hotels welcomes two newcomers to the genius circle. Marriott jumped to #1 this year, spurred by investment in content creation, including the 17-minute short film Two Bellmen, which has registered over five million views on YouTube and boasts its own microsite on the Marriott platform. The Hilton brand tied for top honors with mobile innovations including its HHonors loyalty program app, which enables guests to check-in and check-out, and select their room via a digital floor plan. Genius incumbent Westin offers the industry’s first keyless entry system through the SPG mobile app, and “Westin Finds,” a destination guide microsite that curates recommendations and lets the traveller book restaurant and tickets to attractions without leaving the site. With the economic down turn continuing in the US and Europe, Live Mint e-paper reports many Southeast Asian luxury hotels are turning their attention to India's growing number of wealthy families. Last October, Thailand-based Six Senses Resorts and Spas, which has 10 properties in Europe and Asia, opened a spa in a Jaypee group hotel in Greater Noida. The luxury hotel operator also has two more projects coming up in Pune and one in Mumbai. According to industry experts, these luxury hoteliers are eyeing the increasing number of upper middle class households for luxury services. Forbes magazine featured 55 Indian billionaires in its rich list for 2011 against eight Indians in 2004 and only three in 1996. Indeed, in a recent report, Kotak Wealth Management and Crisil Research said, notwithstanding the economic slowdown, the number of wealthy households in India is estimated to have grown 30% to around 81,000 in 2011-12, and is expected to triple to around 286,000 over the next five years. Several other luxury hotel operators are also strengthening their hold in India. Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts plans to open a resort in Kerala this year, followed by a property in Goa. Bangkok's Lebua Hotels and Resorts, will open its second property in Goa by next September. Another Bangkok company, Dusit International, is set to open five properties in India this year, starting with its most luxurious brand Dusit Deverana.
