David Crystal's talk at IELTS Conference 'The Future of English', Prague 2014 (British Council)

01:05:50
David Crystal is a writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster. He published the first of his 100 or so books in 1964, and became known chiefly for his research work in English language studies, in such fields as intonation and stylistics, and in the application of linguistics to religious, educational and clinical contexts, notably in the development of a range of linguistic profiling techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. He held a chair at the University of Reading for 10 years, and is now Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor. David Crystal’s authored works are mainly in the field of language, including several Penguin books, but he is perhaps best known for his two encyclopedias for Cambridge University Press, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language. Recent books include The Story of English in 100 Words (2011) and Spell it out: the singular story of English spelling (2012). Co-authored books include Words on Words (2000, a dictionary of language quotations compiled with his wife and business-partner, Hilary – Wheatley Medal, 2001) and Shakespeare’s Words (2002) and The Shakespeare Miscellany (2005), the last two in collaboration with his actor son, Ben. A new book with Hilary Crystal, Wordsmiths and Warriors: the English-language Tourist’s guide to Britain, was published in September 2013. Other Shakespeare work includes a regular article for the magazine of Shakespeare’s Globe, Around the Globe. Think On My Words, an introduction to Shakespeare’s language, appeared in 2008. All Shakespeare books can be viewed at The Shakespeare Portal. A new version of the glossary went live in 2008: see Shakespeare’s Words.

Test your English in Johnny's new quiz app for phones and tablets, on both iOS and Android! To download the "Johnny Grammar's Word Challenge" app for free, visit our LearnEnglish website: http://bit.ly/1tVk59X To express preferences in general, we use 'prefer + verb-ing to verb-ing': Brian prefers swimming to sailing. Expressing preferences To express preferences on a particular occasion, we use 'prefer to + infinitive'. If we use 'would prefer to + infinitive', we can continue with 'rather than + infinitive' (without to): Brian would prefer to go fishing on Saturday, rather than go shopping with his wife. We can also use 'would rather + infinitive', or 'would sooner + infinitive' (again without to): He'd rather sit by a river and catch fish than carry her heavy shopping bags.

No dogs! words for the story: It was half past three and Katie had just finished school. Her mum was waiting at the gates withJessie, the dog. "Can we go to the park with Jaia, Mum?" said Katie. "Alright, we can go for half and hour," said Mum. When they got to the park, Katie and Jaia ran towards the swings and slides. "Come on!" shouted Katie, "Let's see how high we can go on the swings!" "You can't come in here, Jess!" shouted Katie and Jaia. Mum took Jessie over to the bench and tiedhim to it. She sat down and started to read the paper. "Did you have a nice time?" Mum asked. "Yes, it was brilliant! I went the highest!" said Katie. "No, I went the highest," said Jaia. "Come on, we need to take you home," said Mum. That night, Jessie couldn't sleep. He was thinking about the park. Quietly, he got of his basket and walked downstairs. He squeezed through the cat flap -- he was outside! He ran towards the park. Soon Jessie was at the park. He walked towards the swings. The gate was open. He went through and looked around...the playground was full of dogs! Jessie climbed up the ladder, went down the slide, whizzed round on the roundabout, went up and down on the see-saw, bounced on the springy, and went up and down on the swing. "Wooooof!" barked Jessie. He went as high as he could on the swing. Soon it was time to go. Jessie got off the swing, went through the gate and walked back home. He squeezed through the cat-flap, walked upstairs and got into his basket. He looked at Katie. "I went the highest," thought Jessie. And went to sleep. We hope you enjoyed watching No dogs! and we will see you soon on LearnEnglish Kids!

R. Campbell - Language and Beyond

39:16
To be successful at school (and later on in life), students need to learn skills that go beyond pure academic knowledge. But how can a teacher best use the material from a course-book to make language useful for their students’ academic, social and future working lives? In this talk, we will look at practical ways to teach life skills to secondary school students. R. Campbell has worked as a teacher, an ELT magazine editor, and an author of course-books and graded readers for which he has won prestigious prizes. For many years he edited and published it's for Teachers, a magazine for teachers of English. He also published magazines for British Council students worldwide. He has created web sites for several ELT publishers and produced the audio and video components for many courses. In his spare time he writes and performs songs. This is the Video of Robert Campbell’s conference in Rome at Tesol Italy 2015.

Both programmes support staff professional development and help to improve pupils’ self-confidence, cultural awareness and motivation for learning. UK SCHOOL: Crossgates Primary School, Rochadale, Greater Manchester, England SECTOR: Primary and Secondary AGE RANGE: 5 - 15 PROJECT TITLE: Our Colourful World UK TEACHER: Kathryn Alker DESCRIPTION The main aim of the project 'Our Colourful World' was to address 'Inclusion & Equity' in our schools, through an exciting & challenging programme of activities and training. Our partnership was committed, through a number of effective strategies, to meeting the specific needs of our pupils, regardless of social background, ethnicity, and learning disabilities. LINKS TO PROJECT OUTCOMES https://twinspace.etwinning.net/13084/pages/page/249759 PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY We were entirely successful in enabling & facilitating high quality learning for all pupils by: focusing on each student’s potential, adapting activities to students’ learning styles & providing a variety of materials & teaching strategies. CURRICULAR INTEGRATION 1. Presentation - 'George & the Dragon'. The learning of script & dialogue was carried out in whole class English lessons & dances, songs, poem/percussion sound picture & recorder playing were all supported in class music lessons. 2. E-book & documentary - The field work i.e. filming for the documentary & guided tours of our locality (with a professional tour guide & incorporating subject areas such as history, geography & RE) were arranged during school time & had the support of class teachers in terms of preparation & follow-up. 3. Podcast 'Joint Story Telling' was completed during English lessons by class teachers in steps, involving: writing the story in whole class & group guided writing lessons or, in yr6, as an assessed piece of writing, 4. QR codes & pages presented in publisher for the e-book were all carried out in class ICT lessons. 5. Letters, on a one-to-one basis, were exchanged with our partner school in France, the content of which was based on themes being studied in French lessons at the time. Pupils were involved in the planning, execution and evaluation of all activities, thus developing skills in terms of independence, decision-making, creativity and communication both in English and MFL. COMMUNICATION COLLABORATION AND EXCHANGE BETWEEN PARTNER SCHOOLS 1. The planning & implementation of activities & tasks through discussions at meetings 2. Taking responsibility for delivering specific aspects of training, during project meetings, to ensure all participants were able to deliver the teaching of necessary skills for our outputs e.g. how to make an magazine/e-book, create a podcast, produce QR codes, upload materials to eTwinning etc. 3. Staff collaboration & cooperation, including discussions & presentations at almost every meeting, for our 'Inclusion' document. 4. Sharing ideas for implementing/teaching various activities i.e. Methodologies used for story writing & filming & ensuring that all our individual results were available to others before a final product was created. 5. Sharing & resolving issues/problems that arose throughout the duration of the project Pupils were always aware that their work was a small part of the end product. USE OF TECHNOLOGY See curricular integration RESULTS, IMPACT AND DOCUMENTATION Staff involvement at every level of the project has impacted positively and significantly on pupils involved, in terms of: 1. Developing intercultural knowledge & understanding 2. Cooperating and communicating with their peers 3. Working in different scenarios & at different levels e.g. supported group activities & independent 4. Opening up opportunities, to a higher level for many pupils, many curriculum areas such as music, instrumental work, dance, art, ICT, field work & literacy - (communication, speaking, listening and writing). 5. Meaningful project work in which they have been fully engaged and which they have very much enjoyed. 6.
