Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery - Big Sur, CA

04:07
The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery spreads over 6 miles of shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas on the central coast of California. The viewing areas are located 90 miles south of Monterey, 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument in San Simeon, 1.5 miles south of Point Piedras Blancas. The viewing areas are open every day of the year, are wheelchair accessible, and free. No reservations required. The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore. Filmed in February of 2016 with a Canon Rebel T4i.

Cool facts about Elephant Seals (filmed near San Simeon, California) Mirunga

06:47
Mirounga angustirostris relaxing on the beach at Piedras Blancas Elephant Seals Roockery close to San Simeon, California The Elephant Seals are extraordinary creatures. As you probably know they were named because, like regular elephants, they have long noses, which are scientifically called “proboscises”. Proboscis can only be developed by males and is used to make very loud noises to scare opponents. Males are quite aggressive and constantly confront each other even at early age. Mating is a serious business and they hold the ground in really scary fights. The wider is beach space they can control the more females will come. In fact, only one out of ten males will get the chance to reproduce. But if they do, they might have 30 to 50 females in harem and 500 pups over the lifetime. To defend his territory male needs to stay ashore for three months without eating using his blubber as energy supply. Elephant seals hunt squids, octopuses and fish including small sharks, skates, and eels. They are great divers and can easily hold breath for an hour, even an hour and a half. The large volume of blood provides supply of oxygen during such long dives, which can be as deep as a mile below surface. Additional oxygen storage is provided by muscles that have unusually high concentration of myoglobin, a protein that contains oxygen-binding iron, similar to hemoglobin in blood cells. Overall, sea elephant body can store a bit over 4 times more oxygen per kilogram than human body. Sea elephants may look hulky and sluggish but they can be quite fast and can even outrun humans. Ano Nuevo State park is great place to watch sea elephants. There is another colony in California - Piedras Blancas rookery located just along highway number 1 north of San Simeon. This is where we shoot this video. Good luck and don’t forget to watch our other videos about cool animals. Sooooooooooooooo cute! Elephant seals are large, oceangoing earless seals in the genus Mirounga. The two species, the northern elephant seal (M. angustirostris) and the southern elephant seal (M. leonina), both were hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the 19th century, but numbers have since recovered. The northern elephant seal, somewhat smaller than its southern relative, ranges over the Pacific coast of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The most northerly breeding location on the Pacific Coast is at Race Rocks, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The southern elephant seal is found in the Southern Hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia and Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth-largest elephant seal colony in the world. Fossils of an as yet unnamed species of Mirounga have been found in South Africa, and dated to the Miocene epoch. Elephant seals breed annually and are seemingly faithful to colonies that have been established breeding areas.

California Elephant Seal, USA

We saw this elephant seal colony right off of Highway 1 north of San Simeon. The bulls, which are much larger than the cows, definitely steal the spotlight. This species' most distinctive feature is the pendulous, trunk-like nose that hangs down loosely. No secret here where the name elephant seal comes from. A good time to see more active elephant seals, and even witness bull fighting, is during the mating season from December to March.

Elephant Seals, at least the males, are massive. Molting their winter coat and sunning on the beach at San Simeon - California. You can see them up close and even more, you can smell them. A little strong, the odor is over powering. The skin must be sensitive to sun cause they keep throwing sand on themselves to prevent a sun burn. The big males when moving are actually are pretty fast and smooth considering their bulk and that they just pull themselves over the ground. music by 'Fly' by Kammerer

Life's A Beach With Elephant Seals Fighting! | The Critter Corner

01:01
"The Discourse" — An Elephant Seal Short Story. This footage was shot during the winter breeding season at Año Nuevo State Park and features two males vying for a chance at being the beachmaster. Things have calmed down since: If you go to see the elephant seals along the coast at this time of year, you’ll find them molting their skin and growing their new wetsuit for the upcoming feeding season in the frigid waters of the North Pacific. __ Natural History: Elephant seals, like all true seals (phocids), lack external ear flaps and crawl on land with rhythmic belly flops. In contrast, eared seals (otariidae), like sea lions, have visible ears and hind flippers they can turn underneath their bodies for "walking." Elephant seals' enormous size and the males' inflated proboscis—resembling a shortened elephant trunk—give these seals their common name. To find their food and avoid white sharks, a major predator, elephant seals dive deep—usually to about 1,700 feet (519 m)—but researchers have recorded dive depths of 5,015 feet (1,540 m). Elephant seals dive for up to 30 minutes at a time, month after month. They seldom stay at the surface for more than a few minutes. One researcher recorded a female elephant seal for 34 days—the seal dove almost continuously, resting at the surface for only about three minutes between dives. Only sperm whales are better divers. Some experts believe that elephant seals nap while gliding downward to the depths. Along the California coast, elephant seals breed on the beaches of the Santa Barbara Islands, Año Nuevo and Piedras Blancas. Conservation: Hundred of thousands of northern elephant seals lived in the Pacific Ocean before hunters slaughtered them for their blubber, which was rendered into lamp oil. By the late 1800s, the only remaining colony—fewer than 100 seals—lived on Mexico's Guadalupe Island. To save them, the Mexican government gave protected status to northern elephant seals in 1922. A few years later, when elephant seals began appearing in Southern California waters, the United States gave the seals the same protection. As a result, the population of northern elephant seals is about 160,000—an example of the importance of protective status and marine sanctuaries in the conservation of our ocean. Cool Facts: Elephant seals, like other mammals, must replace old skin and hair. Most animals shed hairs year-round, but elephant seals do it all at once. Once each year, the animals come ashore and shed the first layer of skin and their fur. The skin and fur come off in sheets as new skin and fur replace the old. Northern elephant seals are the only mammals known to make two migrations each year. After the breeding season (from December through March on Californian and Mexican beaches), they migrate to feeding grounds in the northern Pacific Ocean. They return to warmer waters to molt, then migrate back to feeding areas until the next breeding season. They travel about 21,000 total miles (33,800 km). Northern elephant seals return to the same beaches year after year during the breeding season. The males arrive at the rookeries first, ready to battle each other to decide who will be dominant and have land rights for a harem of females, which arrive later. Fighting is fierce, but the males are protected by a pink "chest shield" formed from keratinized skin. Several days after their arrival, the females give birth to their pups, which nurse for about four weeks and gain 10 pounds (4.5 kg) a day. About 24 days into the weaning period, females mate and then abruptly go to sea. They leave behind their pups, which must learn to swim and forage on their own before they too leave the beaches. Breeding, defending territory, birthing and caring for pups are all so intense that the elephant seals fast while on the rookeries, using stored blubber for nutrition and energy. __ ____ Whale hello there! Talking With Elephant Seals

03:05
Confrontations between male northern elephant seals competing for access to females during the breeding season can lead to violent physical fights, but more often involve ritualized displays and vocalizations. UC Santa Cruz researchers combined observational and experimental approaches to determine what kind of information is encoded within the vocalizations of male elephant seals. They found that males use individual vocal signatures to recognize and respond to familiar opponents. This type of communication system, which relies on an individual's ability to learn the calls of familiar rivals, allows males to minimize the costs of conflict during breeding. Northern Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas, California

00:41
WIKIPEDIA: Elephant seals are large, oceangoing seals in the genus Mirounga. There are two species: the Northern Elephant Seal (M. angustirostris) and the Southern Elephant Seal (M. leonina). Both were hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the nineteenth century, but numbers have since recovered. The Northern Elephant Seal, somewhat smaller than its southern relative, ranges over the Pacific coast of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Southern Elephant Seal is found in the southern hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia, Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth largest elephant seal colony in the world. Elephant seals take their name from the large proboscis of the adult males (bulls) which resembles an elephant's trunk[1]. The bull's proboscis is used in producing extraordinarily loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season. More importantly, however, the nose acts as a sort of rebreather, filled with cavities designed to reabsorb moisture from the animals' exhalations. This is important during the mating season when the male seals rarely leave the beach to feed, and therefore must conserve body moisture, as they have no incoming source of water. Bulls of both the northern elephant seal and the southern elephant seal reach a length of 16 ft (5 m) and a weight of 6,000 lb (3,000 kg), and are much larger than the cows, which typically measure about 10 ft (3 m) and 2,000 lb (900 kg)[2][3]. The largest known bull elephant seal weighed 5000 kg (11,000 lb) and measured 6.9 m (22.5 ft) in length. This makes the elephant seal the largest member of the order Carnivora.
