Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery - Big Sur, CA

04:07
The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery spreads over 6 miles of shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas on the central coast of California. The viewing areas are located 90 miles south of Monterey, 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument in San Simeon, 1.5 miles south of Point Piedras Blancas. The viewing areas are open every day of the year, are wheelchair accessible, and free. No reservations required. The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore. Filmed in February of 2016 with a Canon Rebel T4i.

Talking With Elephant Seals

03:05
Confrontations between male northern elephant seals competing for access to females during the breeding season can lead to violent physical fights, but more often involve ritualized displays and vocalizations. UC Santa Cruz researchers combined observational and experimental approaches to determine what kind of information is encoded within the vocalizations of male elephant seals. They found that males use individual vocal signatures to recognize and respond to familiar opponents. This type of communication system, which relies on an individual's ability to learn the calls of familiar rivals, allows males to minimize the costs of conflict during breeding. Northern Elephant Seals

07:52
Twice each year, the magnificent California coastline serves as a destination for one of earth's most remarkable animal migrations as scores of Northern Elephant Seals arrive on western U.S. shores. They arrive in the winter months from December to March to give birth to their young and to mate. The rest of the year, eight to ten months of the year for most of the animals, they are at sea. While at sea, they are solitary and spend their time navigating thousands of miles deep under north Pacific waters as they forage for food. Named for their great size and large, pendulous noses resembling an elephant's trunk that are unique to males, Elephant Seal bulls grow 14-16 feet in length and can weigh as much as 5,500 pounds compared with females who grow 9-12 feet and weigh between 1,000 and 1,800 pounds. Filmed in stunning high definition, this video was made over a two-day period on December 26-27, 2013 at Piedras Blancas Beach near San Simeon, California. It depicts Elephant Seal bulls clashing in their quest for territory and breeding rights and shows new-born elephant seal pups still in the nursing stages. The video captures all of the natural sounds of the creatures and life in the rookery.

Sooooooooooooooo cute! Elephant seals are large, oceangoing earless seals in the genus Mirounga. The two species, the northern elephant seal (M. angustirostris) and the southern elephant seal (M. leonina), both were hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of the 19th century, but numbers have since recovered. The northern elephant seal, somewhat smaller than its southern relative, ranges over the Pacific coast of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The most northerly breeding location on the Pacific Coast is at Race Rocks, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The southern elephant seal is found in the Southern Hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia and Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth-largest elephant seal colony in the world. Fossils of an as yet unnamed species of Mirounga have been found in South Africa, and dated to the Miocene epoch. Elephant seals breed annually and are seemingly faithful to colonies that have been established breeding areas.

Elephant Seals - San Simeon

California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours the Elephant Seal Rookery at Piedras Blancas in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located just 9 miles north of San Simeon, this is the best place to view elephant seals in California. Join Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips at this amazing vista point and learn more about these giant pinnipeds. Located on a convenient vista turnout right off Highway 1, the Elephant Seal Rookery is home to a colony of between 7 and 10 thousand northern elephant seals. Though they live off the California coast, northern elephant seals migrate twice a year, sometimes traveling as far as the Aleutian Islands or Hawaii. Male elephant seals can weigh up to 9,000 pounds, dive at depths of up to a mile and hold their breath for almost 2 hours. While at sea, elephant seals eat a diet of fish and squid. On land, they do not eat. They survive off their rich blubber, often spraying sand on their backs to keep cool. Docents are on hand daily to answer questions about the colony, who can be seen mating, giving birth, fighting for females and molting, depending on the time of year you visit. In January, the females give birth to a single pup after an 11-month pregnancy. Only half make it to adulthood. Hunted for their blubber, they neared extinction during the 1800s. They are named for their trunklike, inflatable snouts. Next time you're driving along scenic highway 1, check out the elephant seals. It's free, it's fun and educational. Elephant Seals Mating, Birthing, and Feeding in San Simeon, CA, Jan 2012

07:59
Please watch in HD! While on a road trip to the coast we stopped at San Simeon to see the Elephant Seals. This time of year is a popular time for breeding and also when the females are birthing. Almost every female on the beach had a pup next to her. This video was taken on Jan 3rd 2012. This part of the beach is about 7 miles up from the San Simeon Pier. They have a large parking area for guests and also a long wooden walk way build to view the seals from above without invading their space. There is also an information store back in town so the public can purchase souvenirs, books, T-shirts and get more information about the Elephant Seals. Breakdown of the video... 0:18 - A male (bull) displaying territorial behavior. He was chasing off 3 other male seals. 0:55 - View of some females (cow) with their babies (pup) and also hear the pups cry. Its adorable! 1:49 -Over view of the shoreline with all the seals on the beach. 2:22 - Male bull trying to mate with female cows. 5:44 - Male bull in the water making territorial sounds. 5:57 and 6:58- Showing the shoreline with the females laying out with their pups. 6:15 - baby pup feeding. Feel free to 'Like' or leave a comment. Enjoy! Elephant Seals Sparring

01:34
Short clips of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) at Piedras Blancas, California (near San Simeon/Hearst Castle) on October 22, 2009. The young males seemed to be sparring and generally being pushy. They seemd like young punks who would run away if they saw the big bull in the first picture -- just like the boys at my daughter's school... Elephant Seals, at least the males, are massive. Molting their winter coat and sunning on the beach at San Simeon - California. You can see them up close and even more, you can smell them. A little strong, the odor is over powering. The skin must be sensitive to sun cause they keep throwing sand on themselves to prevent a sun burn. The big males when moving are actually are pretty fast and smooth considering their bulk and that they just pull themselves over the ground. music by 'Fly' by Kammerer

Elephant Seals: Back from the Brink

05:02
Hunted nearly to extinction in the 1800's, California's elephant seals have made a remarkable comeback and are now protected by the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. One of the largest mainland breeding colonies in the world for the northern elephant seals is in California at Año Nuevo State Park, adjacent to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. We talk with Terry Kiser, Año Nuevo State Park superintendent, about these fascinating marine mammals and what we can do to help protect them. Everyday Action: Get out and enjoy the beautiful coast and ocean. Respect your local marine life. Tread lightly, or not at all, on tide pools and rocky shore habitats, and keep your distance from marine animals as you can disturb their feeding or resting.
