The World is Flat: Design Principles for Salesforce Data Modeling
Getting the data model right is critical for the performance, usability and maintainability of your Salesforce customizations and custom Force.com applications. As you have probably already experienced, the Force.com database is unlike any relational database you may have used in the past, and SOQL is definitely not SQL. Attend this session to learn why Force.com data modeling is important, how to resist the temptation to normalize the data model and instead apply patterns of denormalization, and what patterns and practices can be applied to balance the competing requirements of user experience, analytics, query performance, scalability and operations to design high-performing data models for Salesforce.

Agile Data Warehouse Design for Big Data Presentation
Synopsis: [Presentaion link: http://www.slideshare.net/vishaltx/a2c-boston-big-data-meetup-20131114 ] Jim Stagnitto and John DiPietro of consulting firm a2c) will discuss Agile Data Warehouse Design - a step-by-step method for data warehousing / business intelligence (DW/BI) professionals to better collect and translate business intelligence requirements into successful dimensional data warehouse designs. The method utilizes BEAM✲ (Business Event Analysis and Modeling) - an agile approach to dimensional data modeling that can be used throughout analysis and design to improve productivity and communication between DW designers and BI stakeholders. BEAM✲ builds upon the body of mature "best practice" dimensional DW design techniques, and collects "just enough" non-technical business process information from BI stakeholders to allow the modeler to slot their business needs directly and simply into proven DW design patterns. BEAM✲ encourages DW/BI designers to move away from the keyboard and their entity relationship modeling tools and begin "white board" modeling interactively with BI stakeholders. With the right guidance, BI stakeholders can and should model their own BI data requirements, so that they can fully understand and govern what they will be able to report on and analyze. The BEAM✲ method is fully described in Agile Data Warehouse Design - a text co-written by Lawrence Corr and Jim Stagnitto. About the speaker: Jim Stagnitto Director of a2c Data Services Practice Data Warehouse Architect: specializing in powerful designs that extract the maximum business benefit from Intelligence and Insight investments. Master Data Management (MDM) and Customer Data Integration (CDI) strategist and architect. Data Warehousing, Data Quality, and Data Integration thought-leader: co-author with Lawrence Corr of "Agile Data Warehouse Design", guest author of Ralph Kimball's "Data Warehouse Designer" column, and contributing author to Ralph and Joe Caserta's latest book: "The DW ETL Toolkit". John DiPietro Chief Technology Officer at http;//A2C.com IT Consulting John DiPietro is the Chief Technology Officer for a2c. What is DATA WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION? What does DATA WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION mean? DATA WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION meaning - DATA WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION definition - DATA WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Data warehouse automation or DWA refers to the process of accelerating and automating the data warehouse development cycles, while assuring quality and consistency. DWA is believed to provide automation of the entire lifecycle of a data warehouse, from source system analysis to testing to documentation. It helps improve productivity, reduce cost, and improve overall quality. Data warehouse automation primarily focuses on automation of each and every step involved in the lifecycle of a data warehouse, thus reducing the efforts required in managing it. Data warehouse automation works on the principles of design patterns. It comprises a central repository of design patterns, which encapsulate architectural standards as well as best practices for data design, data management, data integration, and data usage. In November 2015, an analyst firm has published a guide Which Data Warehouse Automation Tool is Right for You? covering four of the leading products in the DWA space. In November 2015, an international software and technology services company engaged in developing ‘agile tools’ for the data integration industry, was named by CIO Review as one of the 20 most promising productivity tools solution providers 2015 Data warehouse automation can provide advantages like source data exploration, warehouse data models, ETL generation, test automation, metadata management, managed deployment, scheduling, change impact analysis and easier maintenance and modification of the data warehouse. More important than the technical features of DWA tools, however, is the ability to deliver projects faster and with less resources.

Scalable Distributed Design
Recorded on 8 April 2014 at the Riverside Hotel in Durban. Hosted by Chris Tite, entrepreneur, software architect and speaker (http://www.christite.net). Designing scalable distributed systems is not an easy task, it requires a completely different approach to system architecture design. A key consideration in distributed systems is the need to maintain consistency, availability and reliability in the face of system failures. New technologies are at hand to make it easier to implement distributed systems but are no silver bullet when it comes to designing such systems. A key principle of distributed system design is SOA. Implemented correctly SOA reduces unnecessary dependencies that can, over time, creep into large systems and concretises interactions and integrations that should ideally remain flexible. The real practice of SOA reduces and resolves the "corporate arthritis" and can inject flexibility back into your systems, encouraging the reuse of functionality and reducing the total maintenance costs of operations and development. In this session Chris introduced the principle of distributed system design, giving insights that helped the attendees to apply what they learned in a practical way. The session covered; • SOA Architectural patterns. • Introduction to the Service Bus • Hands-on with NServiceBus: An introduction to NServiceBus, setting up the environment, and writing a SOA empowered application with NServiceBus. • Practical examples of Kaleidocode implementations. About the author and presenter, Chris Tite: Chris is a software architect with 20 years experience. He is passionate about quality software and great architecture, while forging the growth of this generation of software developers. Chris holds a B.Sc. Electronic Engineering degree with over 18 years of development experience spanning several platforms and industries. He sports extensive experience with Microsoft tools like ASP.Net, C#.Net, VB.Net and SQL, as well as with ETL and Data Warehousing tools. Chris is a true software professional, well versed with open source tools and languages, including such staples as PHP, Perl, Postgres, and MySQL hosted on Linux. He has a passion for software architecture and processes. Since 2005, Chris has been enthused by Agile development methods, seeing first hand the delight of clients experiencing progressive and effective delivery of a shared vision. Openwest 2014 - Joshua Tolley - Data warehousing for... fairly intelligent beginners (8)
A proper data warehouse can be a beautiful thing, but there's more to it than slapping a reporting tool in front of a new database server and collecting a paycheck. In order for the new system to live up to all the hype, there are a few important design principles that must be considered from the very beginning. We'll demonstrate some of the power of a functional data warehouse, and discuss proven systems for designing and maintaining them.
