The home of science operations

Telescopes in space are humankind’s eyes in the heavens: from their superior observing positions high above Earth’s atmosphere, they provide us with astounding views of the Universe at many different wavelengths. ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) is where the instruments providing these views are operated and where the data produced becomes available for scientific study. Signals from black holes, from distant galaxies, from neighbouring planets and even from planets far beyond the Solar System are beamed back to Earth. ESAC has been chosen as the site for the Science Operations Centres (SOCs) of ESA Science missions for both astronomy and the Solar System. This means ESAC is rapidly evolving into a scientific hot-spot, a meeting point for top-level international space scientists working in different, but closely-related areas. In the summer of 1941 German army was the strongest in Europe and was preparing to use its superiority to defeat the Soviet Union in a three-month lightning campaign. The Soviets, on the other hand, were preparing for a long war and had built up a strong war economy, but the modernization and expansion of the Red Army was still underway and its methods and organization were not yet fully tested in battle. Can the Wehrmacht damage the Soviet Union enough to prevent a recovery or can the Soviets hold until their long-term advantages start to have a strong impact on the war? The Birth of Jesus Christ | Christmas Story for Kids | Animated Children's Bible Stories Holy Tales

Watch other amazing Bible Stories like Dniel and the Lion's Den, Miracles of jesus Christ, Birth of Jesus, Cain ad Abel, Noahs Ark, Joseph, Moses and many more - https://goo.gl/gjBdtQ The History behind the Birth of Jesus in the Christmas Story The census that was ordered by Caesar Augustus was the first of its kind. It was done because the Roman government wanted to make sure that everyone in the Empire was paying their taxes correctly. The census was carried out all over Empire (most of Europe): but in Palestine, it was carried out in a Jewish way rather than a Roman way. This meant that families had to register in the their historical tribal town rather than where they lived. This also meant that Joseph and the very pregnant Mary would have had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, as this was town that Joseph's family (the royal family of David) originally came from - a journey of about 70 miles (112 kilometres). Some people think that Bethlehem could also have been Joseph's actual home town and he'd traveled to Nazareth to collect Mary once they were betrothed/married to take to his home town to initially live. The journey would have taken about three days and they might well have arrived in the evening, because if they had arrived earlier in the day, it is more likely that they would have found somewhere to stay. In those times, there weren't really such things as motels or inns, you normally would have stayed with some extended family or relations. A more accurate translation of 'inn' would be 'guest room'. You would normally stay with extended family in their ‘guest room’ but as it was a busy time the guest room was already full. Most houses would have been shared with the animals that the family kept. Houses had two levels, the upper/mezzanine level where people slept and the ground floor where the animals slept at night and the family lived during the day. The animals were a kind of 'central heating' at night keeping the house warm! The 'guest room' was often an area on the upper/mezzanine level or even a hut put on the flat roof of the house! As many people would have traveled to Bethlehem for the census, all the houses, or certainly upper levels were full. Many people think that Jesus was probably born in September or October during Sukkot, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, rather than during December. During the festival, Jews live outside in temporary shelters (the word 'tabernacle' come from a latin word meaning 'booth' or 'hut'). So Joseph and Mary probably had to sleep with the animals on the low level (where it’s common to have a manger cut into a wall where you put the animal food) or possibly (but unlikely) out in a stable, cave or even a covered market stall that sold animals (these stalls could be rented during tabernacles). It was the custom in those times to wrap a new born baby very tightly in long bandages called swaddling clothes. The arms and legs of the baby were also wrapped, so they couldn't move. This was done because they thought it helped the baby to grow strong, straight limbs! And as no proper crib was available, the new baby boy was placed in a manger, or feeding trough. There's a theory that Jesus might have been born a couple of miles outside of Bethlehem where there was a special shepherds' watch tower called the Migdal Eder. So Jesus might have been born out with the shepherds. The birth of Jesus probably didn't happen in the year 0 but slightly earlier, in about 5, 6 or 7 BCE/BC. The dates that we use now were set by Monks and religious leaders in the Middle Ages and before. It's also quite likely that Jesus was actually born in the autumn (during Tabernacles), not in the winter! It can get very cold in the winter in Israel and it is thought that the census would have most likely taken place during the spring or autumn, at a when many pilgrims, from all over the country, came to visit Jerusalem (which is about six miles from Bethlehem). The Mohammed Cartoon Affair: One Year Later

01:35:05
For more on this event, visit: http://bit.ly/d3Wqfj For more on the Berkley Center, visit: http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu December 5, 2006 | Flemming Rose, the editor responsible for publishing the Danish Muhammed cartoons in 2005, reflected on the controversy and its implications. He was joined by Aiman Mazyek, General Secretary of the leading Muslim organization in Germany. Among the key issues discussed were the origins of the decision to publish in September 2005; the escalation of criticism and violence in early 2006; lessons learned from the controversy; and the place of Muslims in European society today. This event was co-sponsored by the BMW Center for German and European Studies. Flemming Rose is the cultural editor at the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. He made the decision in 2005 to publish the controversial Mohammed cartoons that enflamed anti-Danish opinion across the Muslim world. Rose commissioned the cartoons in response to what he saw as extreme self-censorship in the European press due to fear of violence from Muslim extremists; he expanded on that theme in his 2010 book The Tyranny of Silence. He later commented that by subjecting Islam to satirical depictions, he was treating Muslims in Europe as the equals of other Europeans. He also pushed Jyllands-Posten and other newspapers to reprint Holocaust cartoons originally published in an Iranian newspaper. In addition to his work as editor, Rose is a journalist and author. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Vox pop, schoolgirl: "The Danish newspaper made a big mistake towards our dear prophet and by publishing pictures against Islam." 24. Schoolchildren STORYLINE: About two dozen Palestinian protesters stormed the German cultural centre in Gaza City, smashing windows, breaking doors and burning the German flag, to protest against cartoons deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. About 50 schoolchildren and teenagers gathered at one corner of the street to try to resume the attacks, but Palestinian riot police, armed with batons, pushed them back. The youths threw stones at the police, then fled. 30 Palestinians threw stones at the EU's European Commission building to protest against the cartoons, before police brought them under control. Windows were smashed and debris scattered. Outrage against Danish caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad erupted in a swell of protests across the Muslim world on Friday and continued on Saturday. Fury swept through the streets after Friday Prayers, where clerics called for the severing of diplomatic ties and a boycott of Danish and European goods. On Friday, some protesters even urged al-Qaeda terrorists to target Denmark in retaliation for the despised cartoons. Islamic law, based on clerics' interpretation of the Quran and the sayings of the prophet, forbids any depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, even positive ones, in order to prevent idolatry. Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of schoolchildren in the town of Rafah, demonstrated against Denmark and death for those they accuse of defaming Islam's holiest figure. Children carried banners reading, "there's no God, besides God, we sacrifice everything for you prophet" and "Boycott Danish Goods." Copies of the Danish flag were burned. The cartoons were originally published in a Danish newspaper in September. In recent days, they have been republished in several European newspapers in a show of solidarity and support for freedom of expression. The Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller has been calling Muslim leaders in the Middle East in recent days to try to mend fences. While the Danish government has refrained from curtailing press freedoms, it has said it opposes the demonisation of groups on a religious or ethnic basis. Cartoon Network's Forgotten Mini Era

20:44
Most sources cite that July 1997 marked the end of Cartoon Network's original Checkerboard Era, and the beginning of the well-known and loved Powerhouse Era. But that's not entirely accurate. In actuality, July 1997 brought a brief mini-era of Cartoon Network history that lasted into the spring of 1998, and is all but forgotten - probably because unlike either Checkerboard or Powerhouse, this mini-era was not only rather generic and lacked any kind of personality or distinction, but it was also a transitional period as well - old Checkerboard Era bumpers, promos, and IDs were still being phased out up until March 1998, while Powerhouse Era was slowly being introduced beginning in December 1997. Perhaps this transitional mini-era could be known as the Starburst Era, as a majority of the new promos for this era were for the then-new Cartoon Cartoons (Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and a new season of Dexter's Laboratory), and featured the Cartoon Network logo plastered over a colorful starburst. These promos also often featured an electric guitar riff that ended with a 12-note stinger accompanying the aforementioned starburst logo closing. A majority of these promos were animated by Todd Wahnish, who animated all of the Powerhouse Era bumpers and IDs. Because this marked the beginning of Cartoon Cartoons, the new shows were promoted heavily during this time, with most of the promos lasting well into the spring of 1998. Originally, the Cartoon Cartoons would open with a green version of the intro, featuring a different variety of cartoony voice-overs announcing "CARTOON CARTOON!" These continued to be used to open Cartoon Cartoons up until November 1998, when the custom, show-specific, blue intros were introduced as part of the 1998 Cartoon Cartoon Weekend. For the December 1997 Cartoon Cartoon Weekend, the green intros would feature random Cartoon Cartoon characters popping in and out of various different blocks in the Cartoon Network logo. As noted above, this mini-era was transitional. While the Cartoon Cartoons had their own series of bumpers and network IDs, many older properties, such as Warner Bros. cartoons (Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies) and Hanna-Barbera shows still used their Checkerboard Era bumpers and IDs up until March 1998, when they began adopting their own Powerhouse Era bumpers and IDs. A couple of weeks after the inception of Cartoon Cartoons, most Cartoon Network shows retired their Checkerboard Era Strings "Next" bumpers in favor of "Next" bumpers that opened a series of brightly colored and funky-designed curtains - these also continued to see use until March 1998 when Powerhouse Era bumpers were being introduced (some minor exceptions, such as The What A Cartoon! Show still retained their Strings "Next" bumpers during this time). Perhaps the earliest-known example of Powerhouse being incorporated into Cartoon Network was the Great Crate Contest that lasted from October into early November 1997 - the promos and commercials for this contest featured the familiar arrangement of Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" song that was associated with many of the Powerhouse Era bumpers, promos, and IDs. Late December 1997 saw the introduction of the Cartoon Crisis Center spots, which could arguably be considered part of the Powerhouse Era, as these spots continued to see use throughout the era. Beginning in mid-March 1998, Todd Wahnish's Powerhouse promos, bumpers, and IDs were gradually being introduced, while any remaining Checkerboard Era spots were finally being put to rest. By April 1998, Powerhouse Era had officially taken over, and any traces of Checkerboard Era were completely gone.

Arts District Extra: Under The Guillotine Political Cartoon

02:33
The work of James Gillray is proof that the past and present aren’t that far removed. Two hundred years ago, the caricaturist was unabashed in his analysis of European politics and social norms of his day. But the odd thing is, swap 18th century royalty for 21st century U.S. leaders, or would-be leaders, and a lot of the work, well, still works. Gillray’s work is on display at the Metropolitan State University - Center for Visual Art in Denver.

Putin and the occupation of the Crimea. Zapolskiy Cartoon President

04:23
So Vladimir, tell me, what are results of the Crimea occupation? Well, i0t’s like crawling up to the bottom. According to surveys of the Levada Center, 16% of the people support the financing of the Crimea and Sevastopol. This means that my image of the “collector of the Russian lands” has remained, but the “Crimeanism” has ended. They do not want to pay for my military scams from their own pockets. This is bad. And not only for Russia, but also for the Crimea itself. They also do not want to live in our high security colony, to serve in the army, pay taxes and receive penny salaries and pensions. These are just simple usual citizens, but how do oligarchs, officials and your offshore friends evaluate the situation? I have two categories of such people. Some worry about the Crimea, because their interests are connected with openness to the West. Others do not care about the West, because they are ready to live in the leper colony. As I do. We are sure that whatever we do, they will be afraid to isolate Russia ... I can also threaten with the nuclear button! How do you evaluate the effect of the anti-russian sanctions due to the Crimea occupation? Well, your bourgeois Bloomberg said that the volume of the Russian economy due to sanctions is 6% less than it could be. Well, complete nonsense. What volume? What kind of economy? Our economy is economical, wage rates are small, and citizens can live without pants with a lash. Potatoes in the cottages will be collected and it will be ok for them. Well, we cannot take loans, so we will collect pensioners, China sent us to the ass, so we did not get out of it, we live in it, in engineering, oil products and all sorts we have slackened equipment ... well, and we do not care ... People have their own hands and shit. Hands and shit? What are you talking about, Vladimir? The fact that you can heat the stove by shit by drying it while waving their arms. Smells, however, strongly, but the smell of the fatherland to the people is sweet and pleasant. To be honest, I did not expect that ordinary people adapt so quickly. But sanctions had worsen not only the life of ordinary people, but also your friends and accomplices life, who became oligarchs with your help. Are you not afraid that they will arrange a revolution after coming back from London? Of course not. It is true that many offended by the West are returning now, and the loot is being brought back. But they all require a tougher anti-Western regime than me. They even recommend me to stop making the enemy from Ukraine, and to start making it from Europe. And the people, too, want to forgive the Ukrainians, and quietly go to the Crimea without shame.I’ll think about it. So you are satisfied with the results of annexation? Me? Of course not. I didn’t even need this Crimea, neither LNR nor DNR. I’m against the violence, I’m for the peace, for the human rights...My love is merciless and has no borders! Well Vladimir it seems you have overworked. The effect of the truth serum has gone away. We have to end this conversation now, but you, dear viewers, know that we are working every day. Spread our video, subscribe to our Youtube channel, put likes and recommend us to your friends. Watch a truthful Putin every day. It was Zaposlkiy program. Goodbye.

euronews cinema - Cartoon Movie shows depth of European talent

05:00
http://www.euronews.com/ Which European animation movie will get into cinemas tomorrow? 2012's Cartoon Movie, gathering over 700 participants from 35 countries in the French city of Lyon, presented 55 European animation film projects in a bid to raise finance for films either in concept, development, production or already completed. How does Cartoon Movie work? In the morning participants get to see trailers of the movie projects presented here. Film producers, buyers, distributors and sales agents then go to one of the presentation studios for more information about the project that interests them. The key questions are: What's the story? How much money do you need? Is it a family movie or for teenagers? Are the DVD rights for sale? After the business cards are exchanged everyone hopes for the beginning of a fruitful co-production. One of the projects, "The Boy with the Clock" is the story of Little Jack who was born on the coldest day on earth with a frozen heart. A doctor performs a Cuckoo Clock transplant to save his life The film project in production is based on a book by French musician and writer Mathieu Malzieu. "I wrote the music as if the book needed a film soundtrack. I was already dreaming about it being made into a movie, even thought I was far from sure one would ever be made. But luckily I bumped into Luc besson and his wife Virginie who wanted to produce it," he says. What has the audience feedback been like for the movie presentation? "We've had a lot of very positive feedback. What's great is that a lot of interest has come from abroad, from Tunisia, Lebanon, or Britain. It's certainly widened our horizons," says producer Virginie Besson-Silla. Film project "Animal'Z" is based on a comic book by French comics artist and film director Enki Bilal. Mankind has destroyed planet Earth. Drinking water has become extremely rare, and only the fittest will survive in the battle for water. It is Bilal's third animated feature. "The challenge was to forget the book, although it was obviously the reference, a finished product, but I had to avoid making a mere copy. I had to reinvent it using the language of cinema," he says. "It's a Zucchini's life" tells the story of a 10 year- old boy who ends up in a special care orphanage after his alcoholic mother dies. "We come from Switzerland, Geneva, so we are looking to integrate ourselves a little more in the European animation landscape. We're already been talking with a couple of TV companies and distributors. For us this is really very productive, as it will also help us to get finance back in Switzerland, and bring the film intro cinemas soon, I think," says producer Claude Barras. But bearing in mind the high cost of animated movies, between 5 and 15,000 euros per minute, are they still attractive for investors? "I think its the best investment because animation movies can be very easily synchronised for the different markets with national, local stars and marketed much easier then live-action movies. In Europe animated movies are very succesful," says Sales Agent for Sola Media Solveig Langeland. "The Suicide Shop" has already been presented three times at Cartoon Movie. Now the film is almost finished and will be released in September. For this production 4 studios joined forces to support French film director Patrice Leconte. "Although there's a whole host of co-producers, partners, moneymen and investors, that never affected me. I just got on with making the movie with my animation team, and at no time did we have to justify ourselves to anyone," he says. Cartoon Movie also saw the wraps taken off the latest movie from Bristol's Oscar-winning Aardman studios. "The Pirates" will be released at the end of this month.
