A Very Fishy Affair - Free Range Sailing Ep 64

28:11
We take advantage of the calm weather to further enjoy Broadhurst Reef and stock up our fridge with fish ready for our return to Magnetic Island and Townsville. We go spearfishing on our final dive at the reef and Pascale goes on a magic Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) date with Meg from SV Sarean. On our return to Magnetic Island, we encounter fickle winds despite a weather report to the contrary. Pascale brings in a decent size Spanish Mackerel and shows you how we smoke it with Casuarina wood that we collect from the beach at Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island. DIY Engine Hoist and Head Removal - Free Range Sailing Ep 66

19:43
In the first of our refit series, we get started on our two main priorities for Mirrool's refit namely, preparing the hull for a new coat of anti-foul and a minor engine overhaul. As with all refits the unexpected is commonplace and we have to adapt to changing circumstances. NOT ALL FREE BOATS ARE CREATED EQUAL. The majority of free boats on Craigslist are the epitome of "Break Out Another Thousand" and are not something you should pursue. Go for the unicorns. Get Your Free SLV Sticker here: https://shop-lavagabonde.com/ I’m not going to apologise. I can’t write to you in every single description under the video, besides that would be boring. This sporadic inconsistent approach is much more cultish anyway. The name that we will all refer to ourselves as is “Monograph Lectors.” We are therefore a “Bilge of Monograph Lectors.” Congratulations to Crescent Of Darkness for being the most creative member, so far, of our new group. You are now a Sailing La Vagabonde administrator of the comments section. Everyone in our group should recognise this and extend to you the same respect and courtesy they would me. Its not going to be an easy job, it will be gruelling and thankless, with great power comes great responsibility and suchforth. If everyone could please write a congratulations in the comments to Crescent Of Darkness for his new position and something defferential like “All hail Crescent Of Darkness new Administrator of the Bilge of Monograph Lectors” We will certainly be looking for new Administrators in the future so please be aware that your comments will be monitored for grammar, creativeness, edge and wit. We will be monitoring in a relaxed manner despite the Orwellian undertones that word harbours. Thank you for reading Lectors. Keeping your Culture - Free Range Sailing Ep 43

20:22
We spend our last day on Thursday Island attending the Dawn Service and Parade for ANZAC Day before sailing to the island of Badu where we meet Councillor, Laurie and spend the day with his family on his beach camp. In this episode Pascale also shows you how to make your own yoghurt so it’s a plenty culture filled. How We Make Yoghurt Equipment you'll need: • A well insulated 1L yoghurt container which could be a wide-mouthed Thermos, an EsiYo Kit container or a wide-mouthed container placed in a warm place and wrapped in several blankets so it maintains warmth for at least 12 hours • Thermometer • Saniitser solution (We use our brewing sanitiser mix but 1 part bleach 50 parts water should be sufficient as well) • Saucepan • Spoon • Whisk Ingredients • 2 ½ cups of Milk Powder (or 800mL fresh milk with ½ cup milk powder) • 700mL sterilised water (to sterilise your water you can boil the night before) • Yoghurt with alive cultures Thoroughly clean your yoghurt container, whisk and spoon with warm soapy water and sterilise using sanitiser solution then set aside. To begin whisk the water with the milk powder in the saucepan.  Using your thermometer and whisking to prevent the milk burning on the bottom of your saucepan heat the milk to 45 degrees. Once at 45 degrees turn off the heat and use your sanitised spoon to add 2 tablespoons of yoghurt to the milk. Stir well and then pour into your yoghurt container. Leave your filled container in a stable place for at least 12 hours. Then place in the fridge until cool. To maintain the live yoghurt culture always serve your yoghurt with a clean, sanitised spoon and, as delicious as it is, don’t be tempted to eat it straight from the tub! FAILING At Cooking Fish Cakes - Even The Cat Won't Eat Them - (MJ Sailing - EP 88)

24:07
Getting ready for a large festival in Urzelina, us and s/v Calico Skies move our boats down from Velas. The wind seems pretty non-existant, but that's a good thing for us once we drop anchor. Because there were no sandy patches and we anchored on rocks, the chances of dragging went down and we felt comfortable to spend one night there. While on anchor watch before going to the local festivities, I cooked up some of the fish Matt had speared a few days before, and tried to make fish cakes. Without any previous skills or instructions. They did not work out well. Once on shore though, our evening was much improved as we enjoyed groups of locals dancing coreographed numbers through the street, each highlighting something special about the area. The next day we joined Fillip's family again for lunch at their man cave, before being shuttled out to his father-in-law's house, where he also grows all kinds of fruits and vegetables. The best part is...all of it is done for family and friends! Much love from the Azores! Jessica, Matt & Georgie Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. New York, London, Paris, Badu! - Free Range Sailing Ep 44

21:23
The people you meet are a big part of travelling so in this episode, we introduce more of the Artists of Badu, in the remote islands of the Torres Strait. Their art combines many elements to tell stories of their past and present interaction with the natural world, all presented with a high level of skill that is being recognised by collectors around the world. We were taken so much by what we saw of it on Thursday Island that we decided to go miles out of our way to visit the centre and learn their motto-Though we're Small, We Aim High. As our friendship grows, our new mate Joseph shares a few lessons with us and we get to see some of the techniques in use on Badu as well as take away a special memento of our visit. For more information on the Badu Art Centre or, if, like us, you're interested in purchasing a piece of art, the full catalogue including the stories in respect of each piece is available at: https://www.baduartcentre.com.au/.
