Because of its extremely high salt content, no animal or plant life can survive in the Dead Sea. So why do tourists from around the world flock to bathe in its deep blue waters? Clarissa Ward takes us on a trip to this exotic and unique destination.

The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח, Yam ha-Melah, "Sea of Salt", also Hebrew: יָם הַמָּוֶת, Yam ha-Mavet, "The Sea of Death", and Arabic: البحر الميت About this sound Al-Bahr al-Mayyit (help·info)), also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 429 metres (1,407 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometers (31 mi) long and 15 kilometers (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The Dead Sea water has a density of 1.24 kg/liter, which makes swimming similar to floating. Biblical period- Dwelling in caves near the Dead Sea is recorded in the Hebrew Bible as having taken place before the Israelites came to Canaan, and extensively at the time of King David. Just northwest of the Dead Sea is Jericho. Somewhere, perhaps on the southeastern shore, would be the cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis which were said to have been destroyed in the time of Abraham: Sodom and Gomorra (Genesis 18) and the three other "Cities of the Plain", Admah, Zeboim and Zoar (Deuteronomy 29:23). Zoar escaped destruction when Abraham's nephew Lot escaped to Zoar from Sodom (Genesis 19:21-22). Before the destruction, the Dead Sea was a valley full of natural tar pits, which was called the vale of Siddim. King David was said to have hidden from Saul at Ein Gedi nearby. In Ezekiel 47:8-9 there is a specific prophecy that the sea will ".. be healed and made fresh", becoming a normal lake capable of supporting marine life. A similar prophecy is stated in Zechariah 14:8, which says that "Living waters will go out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea (likely the Dead Sea) and half to the western sea (the Mediterranean)..." Greek and Roman period- Aristotle wrote about the remarkable waters. The Nabateans and others discovered the value of the globs of natural asphalt that constantly floated to the surface where they could be harvested with nets. The Egyptians were steady customers, as they used asphalt in the embalming process that created mummies. The Ancient Romans knew the Dead Sea as "Palus Asphaltites" (Asphalt Lake). King Herod the Great built or rebuilt several fortresses and palaces on the western bank of the Dead Sea. The most famous was Masada, where in 70 CE a small group of Jewish zealots fled after the fall of the destruction of the Second Temple. The zealots survived until 73 CE, when a siege by the X Legion ended in the deaths by suicide of its 960 inhabitants. Another historically important fortress was Machaerus (מכוור), on the eastern bank, where, according to Josephus, John the Baptist was imprisoned by Herod Antipas and died. Also in Roman times, some Essenes settled on the Dead Sea's western shore; Pliny the Elder identifies their location with the words, "on the west side of the Dead Sea, away from the coast ... [above] the town of Engeda" (Natural History, Bk 5.73); and it is therefore a hugely popular but contested hypothesis today, that same Essenes are identical with the settlers at Qumran and that "the Dead Sea Scrolls" discovered during the 20th century in the nearby caves had been their own library. Josephus identified the Dead Sea in geographic proximity to the ancient Biblical city of Sodom. However, he referred to the lake by its Greek name, Asphaltites. Various sects of Jews settled in caves overlooking the Dead Sea. The best known of these are the Essenes of Qumran, who left an extensive library known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The town of Ein Gedi, mentioned many times in the Mishna, produced persimmon for the temple's fragrance and for export, using a secret recipe. "Sodomite salt" was an essential mineral for the temple's holy incense, but was said to be dangerous for home use and could cause blindness. The Roman camps surrounding Masada were built by Jewish slaves receiving water from the towns around the lake. These towns had drinking water from the Ein Feshcha springs and other sweetwater springs in the vicinity. Byzantine period- Intimately connected with the Judean wilderness to its northwest and west, the Dead Sea was a place of escape and refuge. The remoteness of the region attracted Greek Orthodox monks since the Byzantine era. Their monasteries, such as Saint George in Wadi Kelt and Mar Saba in the Judean Desert, are places of pilgrimage.

On Day 8 of our trip to Jordan, we drove from Wadi Rum to the Dead Sea. But in the morning before we left, we first had a camel ride in the desert. It was amazing to see Wadi Rum from the back of a camel, such a peaceful way to experience Wadi Rum. Once we reached the Dead Sea we enjoyed a couple of excellent Lebanese meals. 01:37 Camel Ride at Wadi Rum - Along with a truck safari, one of the best ways to see Wadi Rum is my taking a camel ride. Due to the rain, we couldn’t ride camels the day before, so we decided to ride today in the morning. Although it quite hurt my legs, it was well worth it, and a very fun way to see Wadi Rum. After having breakfast at the tented camp, and riding the camels, we jumped in the car and started driving towards the Dead Sea. 05:08 Mount Nebo - 1 JD ($1.41) - On the way to the Dead Sea, we stopped off at Mount Nebo, the place where God showed Moses the promised land with a view overlooking an expansive area of land, we could even see the Dead Sea. It was an amazing view. 05:59 Ocean Restaurant (Dead Sea) - As soon as we reached the Dead Sea, we were all very hungry, so we stopped at Ocean Restaurant, a Lebanese restaurant with a view of the sea. All of a sudden they started bringing masses of mezze to our table, until the point where there was literally not a single empty space on our table. There were so many different dips and appetizer dishes to choose from including cheese sticks, kibbeh, heart of palm salad, hummus, grape leaves, tabbouleh, and moutabel. There were so many different Lebanese mezze dishes that I forgot all about the Dead Sea! For our main dish at Ocean Restaurant we had a dish called sayadieh, which is a seafood platter including fish and biryani rice served with a tomato sauce. There was both fried and grilled fish, and what I really liked in the dish was that it was served with a deep fried onion, which tasted fantastic. For dessert, they brought out giant plates of fruit and a variety of different desserts including osmalieh and aish el saraya. 13:13 Crowne Plaza Jordan Dead Sea Resort - After our incredible late lunch, we drove to the Crown Plaza Resort, and checked in. We stayed just for one night. 14:07 Burj Al Hamam - Lebanese Restaurant at Crown Plaza Hotel - For dinner we ate at Burj Al Hamam, one of the most well known restaurant names in Lebanese food in Jordan. Again, we were served an impressive array of different mezze starter dishes, but they served us a few dishes that were different from what we had eaten for lunch including kibbeh nayyeh. I’ve always been a huge fan of different types of raw meat dishes, and kibbeh nayyeh is the Lebanese version of raw minced beef mixed with a variety of spices. It’s typically eaten with garlic sauce and olive oil to garnish, and scooped up with pieces of bread. It was amazing. For our main dish we had mixed grill, including kebabs, lamb pieces, and chicken, and then kebab khashkhash, kebabs in tomato sauce. Again, the food was excellent. -- Check out my Amman, Jordan Travel Guide: http://migrationology.com/travel-guides/amman-jordan/ (Including where to stay, what to see, safety information, and extra tips) MY WEBSITES: Migrationology.com: http://migrationology.com/ EatingThaiFood.com: http://eatingthaifood.com/ TravelByYing.com: http://travelbyying.com/ T-shirts & Food Guides: https://migrationology.com/store/ Resources: http://migrationology.com/travel-resources/ SOCIAL MEDIA: Snapchat: @migrationology Instagram: https://instagram.com/migrationology Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/migrationology Thank you very much for watching this Jordan food and travel video! --

The Dead Sea has already lost more than one third of its surface area over the years. The water level is currently dropping by over 1 meter every year and its shoreline is expected to drop from 411 meters to 430 meters below sea level by 2020, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. Traditionally, the Jordan River is the Dead Sea’s inflow source. However, 50 years ago it was diverted to supply cities, reducing the water inflow level to the Dead Sea to just 5% of its original volume. The hot and dry climate of the region makes it difficult for the Dead Sea to restore itself. That added to the rapid loss of water has resulted in the increased salinity of the lake. The group also points out that the Dead Sea is threatened by cosmetic companies that extract mineral water from the region to make beauty products. Hotels and attractions built along the shoreline also release untreated sewage into the Dead Sea. Even though the Dead Sea does not have any wildlife in itself, the region around it is known for supporting several endangered species such as ibexes, leopards and the indigenous Dead Sea Sparrow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. The Dead Sea dries, lowering its level at a speed of 0.8-1.2 m per year. The reasons for this phenomenon has been accentuated in recent years are mainly the lack of rainfall and high temperatures and population growth, which brings the flow diversion of the Jordan River with the creation of aqueducts and reservoirs, like the National Aqueduct of Israel. This has led to the creation of wells on the shores of the Dead Sea and the lowering of its level (de-394m in 1960 to -423 in 2012), reducing its area a third of the original. The shuffling solution for this phenomenon is the creation of the Peace Canal, which would provide the necessary water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, measuring 180 miles long and 2 meters high. If it will not put any remedy, it is predicted that in 39 years it can dry completely. http://igeo.tv/ Watch Video Syria, International Armed Conflict: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RzvCYF1eT8 Igeo TV en español: ver videos, agencia de noticias y venta de metraje en: http://www.youtube.com/user/igeotv

Once a tourist attraction and one of the world's first health resorts, the Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate. Multiple canals and pipelines were proposed to reduce its recession. And though the dangers have been known for years, little has been done on the ground. Some say it could be too late. Let's get started with this report by Maya Margit, on one of the major environmental problems caused by the decline of the Dead Sea - the creation of sinkholes. The Dead Sea Scrolls are the greatest biblical find of the 20th century - they contain the earliest versions of the Hebrew Bible, maps to the hidden treasure of Jerusalem's Holy Temple, and insight into the mindsets of John the Baptist, Jesus and the early Christians. But the scrolls were soon embroiled in controversy with allegations of conspiracy and cover-up, rumours that persist today thanks to The Da Vinci Code. Most people have heard of the scrolls, but what do they actually contain? In this documentary, journalist Rageh Omaar tells the remarkable story of the Dead Sea Scrolls and uncovers the truth behind the myth, discovering that their story is far from over.

“And it shall come to pass in that day that living waters shall go out from Yerushalayim: half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea; in summer and in winter shall it be.” Zechariah 14:8 (The Israel Bible™) Then said he unto me: ‘These waters issue forth toward the eastern region and shall go down into the Arabah; and when they shall enter into the sea into the sea of the putrid waters the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass that every living creature wherewith it swarmeth whithersoever the rivers shall come shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish; for these waters are come thither that all things be healed and may live whithersoever the river cometh. Ezekiel 47:8-9 (The Israel Bible) Almost ten times saltier than the ocean, nothing can live in the Dead Sea’s hyper-saline environment – Or so scientists thought until recently. Scientific research has proved the existence of life at the bottom of the sea, but due to a unique set of circumstances, signs of life have begun appearing on its very shores, precisely as it is written in the Book of Prophets in the Bible. A young woman on a nature hike was shocked recently when she discovered freshwater ponds with fish on the shores of the Dead Sea. Samantha Siegel, a Jewish woman living in Jerusalem, often takes trips to the desert and the ancient body of water. On a recent visit, she encountered an incongruous sight with powerful implications: a prophecy appearing before her eyes that seemed to contradict the laws of nature.... The Dead Sea also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Its surface and shores are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, Earth’s lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 377 m (1,237 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 33.7% salinity, it is also one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Assal (Djibouti), Garabogazköl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond) have reported higher salinities. It is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. Biblically, it was a place of refuge for King David. It was one of the world’s first health resorts (for Herod the Great), and it has been the supplier of a wide variety of products, from balms for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers. People also use the salt and the minerals from the Dead Sea to create cosmetics and herbal sachets. In 2009, 1.2 million foreign tourists visited on the Israeli side.

Mysterious Giant Sinkholes were discovered in the Dead Sea. For more news and videos visit ☛ http://ntd.tv Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C The Dead Sea is famous for its healing remedies and unique minerals. But in recent years a new phenomena has appeared - gigantic sinkholes are appearing along the sea's west coast. Our Israeli team spoke with a researcher who fell into one of those holes. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth. It attracts tourists from all over the world, who enjoy its healing waters. Industries also utilize its minerals. But in recent years, deep holes began forming along its west coast. In Israeli terminology, they are named "Sinkholes," and they can swallow up roads, vehicles and even humans. We went out to examine this phenomenon, and met a geologist who fell into a sinkhole while he was examining it. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "I was informed that new sinkholes were spotted somewhere. I went to document it and discovered a small sinkhole... while documenting it, it grew larger and drew me in." So what does it feel like to be swallowed by the earth? [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "I fell into a massive landslide, which kept me on one side, but the other side was burying me. The first thing I recall was striving to get out. It was pitch dark and I couldn't see anything. I felt as though there was a heavy rock on my head. It was a struggle which lasted for hours, trying to dig my way out; and at one point I managed to climb out of the fall, and from that moment onwards, the anxiety began." Raz sat in the depth of the hole for 14 long hours. He was unable to move, and unable to climb upwards. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "The biggest problem was that I was afraid to move much, because everything was very fragile, and each movement could have aroused a new landslide". Then, Raz found a solution for his anxieties -- he began writing. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "Since occasionally there were more landslides, I felt anxious. I found a postcard in my bag, and I also had all my equipment along with me in my backpack, including a pen, so I decided I was going to write a farewell letter." Writing on the postcard helped him to relax. In his bag there was also a roll of toilet paper, and he kept on writing during all these long hours in the pit. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "Since writing felt good, I decided to keep writing. I found a roll of toilet paper in my backpack, so I took it out and it lasted until the evening". In addition to writing, Raz made a conscious decision to keep thinking positively all along, and that soothed his anxieties. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "Because otherwise I would be mentally lost, and the first moments were extremely difficult -- moments of a very deep, existential anxiety." After we learned about his downfall in the sinkhole, we tried to understand how sinkholes are created. Raz claims that rivers, including the Jordan River, that used to flow into the Dead Sea -- are being shifted from their courses for various reasons. The heavy industry in the area also evaporates the sea. As a result, the sea level drops about 1 meter per year. This eventually leads to the creation of sinkholes. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "The drop in the level of water in the Dead Sea is a result of humans interfering with the water system. The water levels are dropping rapidly, something which probably never existed in natural conditions. Now the systems are imbalanced so there are reactions such as this one, with infrastructures collapsing." The appearance of sinkholes poses a very concrete danger -- A danger for lives, for property and for the economy. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "Sinkholes are dangerous for people. There are people who fell into sinkholes, including myself, but not only me. A car or a bus might also fall into a sinkhole." The Sinkholes have severely harmed the economy in the Dead Sea area. In such a place, it is impossible to cultivate any agricultural products, or have tourism. [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "It harmed the agriculture, and most of the palm plantations in Ein-Gedi had to be abandoned... there was also a huge tourism project on the beach here, and a lot of money was invested here, but we had to abandon it." We tried to keep optimistic. Is the situation reversible? Is it possible to repair the Dead Sea and its surroundings? [Eli Raz, Geologist, Ein-Gedi]: "You picture a hypothetical situation in which all consumers who use water from the Dead Sea and the Jordan River -- will give up their water. This sounds very unlikely." Reporter:Israela Yablonka Photographer:Anat Markram NTD News, Israel

BGU researchers have today that they have discovered deep springs on the floor of the Dead Sea, which provide fresh water to the rapidly dwindling lake. Meanwhile, a parallel study by German researchers has found new forms of life growing around the fissures in the sea floor. The Dead Sea is shrinking as the water level drops at an alarming rate -- about a meter a year. Israeli and German scientists have been researching groundwater springs which discharge from the sea floor to understand the impact of this process on this unique ecosystem. While the existence of springs has been known for decades as people observed ripples on the surface, the scientists have discovered deep springs not visible from shore.
