My Top 10 Favorite Fiction Books!

10:11
I'm prepping for my talk in Vermont this week, so here's a fun video about my favorite fiction books. What are your favorites? And what should I read next? Links to the books (only a couple; I won't spoil the whole list!): HPMoR: http://hpmor.com/ is the official site, though I actually recommend checking out xenohedron's PDFs, which include Daystar's re-written versions of the first four chapters (the originals are considered by the community to be a bit rough compared to the rest of the story; Daystar's versions bring the writing up to the standard of later chapters and make the book easier to get into), and are formatted to look very similar to the printed canon Harry Potter books: https://github.com/xenohedron/hpmor-pdf Hitchhiker's Guide, narrated by Douglas Adams - Unfortunately, it seems this is the only way to acquire this version these days: http://www.amazon.com/Douglas-Adams-Hitchhikers-Restaurant-Everything/dp/155800758X

The Hilarious 2-Step Plan for Writing Humor in Fiction

02:48
http://helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com http://www.kmweiland.com Talks about the successful premise of comedy in any book—and the two crucial steps to writing humor in your story. Historical and speculative novelist K.M. Weiland offers tips and essays about the writing life to help other writers understand the ins and outs of the craft and the psychology behind the inspiration. Video Transcript: Somebody once said the key to writing humor is realizing comedy is just tragedy turned on its head. In fiction, the success or failure of this technique largely comes down to tone. A man going slowly insane is horrible in Crime & Punishment and uproarious in What About Bob? This is true also on the much smaller scale of individual moments in your story. Even within a tragedy, you can slant the tone to allow for genuinely funny moments—and vice versa for poignant moments in otherwise light and funny stories. So with that understood, what is the key to writing humor in your story? There’s actually two steps that you need to be aware of. I like to call them setup and switcheroo. Setup is basically just foreshadowing. You’re shaping your story’s events to indicate something hilariously bad is going to happen. In Vincent Minelli’s classic movie Father’s Little Dividend, he does this beautifully when Spencer Tracy’s and Joan Bennett’s characters head to the hospital for the birth of their first grandchild. Joan’s driving like a madwomen, breaking every traffic law in the book. Then when they arrive at the hospital, she jumps out and tells her husband to park the car. Naturally, we expect there to be repercussions for her reckless driving. Then comes the switcheroo. As they’re leaving the hospital (turns out their daughter’s going into labor was a false alarm anyway), who should be waiting for them but a traffic cop. The audience is delighted by this payoff to the earlier setup. But it’s not hilarious yet. Meekly, Joan asks if there’s anything wrong—fully expecting, just like us, that she will receive numerous tickets for her crazy driving. But, nope, the cop pulls a switcheroo. Turns out good ol’ Spencer, who was an innocent and protesting bystander to his wife’s recklessness, parked the car in front of a fire hydrant. It’s a joke that’s set up perfectly with its foreshadowing, paid off just as the audience expects—and then switcheroo’d into something unexpected and therefore very funny.

Top 3 Books to Read in the Winter (Teen Fiction/YA)

05:04
Hey guys! Today was the first time it truly felt like winter outside to me (woohoo winter jackets) and it made me want to curl up with a good book to read. I thought it would be fun to make a video to share my favorites with you! In no particular order: •Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater •Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle •My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories edited by Stephanie Perkins (Authors list: Holly Black, Ally Carter, Matt de La Peña, Gayle Forman, Jenny Han, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Myra McEntire, Rainbow Rowell, Stephanie Perkins, Laini Tayler and Kiersten White) Mentioned books/series: •Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson •Gallagher Girls Series (also check out Heist Society Series) by Ally Carter These are teen fiction books or young adult fiction books that keep me comfy inside my head during the winter. I have so many faves but I narrowed it down to 3 so this could be a shorter video! Don't forget to comment your book suggestions/recommendations for winter or for anytime in general! :) **Oops I didn't realize this until now but I did not mean to match my lipstick to my top, it looked lighter in daylight!

Fiction Genres

Looking for a fun book? Think about the authors you read and enjoyed. Do they have more books you want to try? Think about the type of stories you have enjoyed -- genres, types of fiction. Librarian use a system of genres that connects stories that are related. We keep our groupings broad, because our purpose is to connect readers with more books. We can group books into 6 basic genres. In an Language Arts/English class, you may be introduced to a system of genre classification that is stricter and that creates more than six classifications. Please remember, their purpose is to compare and contrast books and to do it in great detail. Librarians, however, are less interested in how related stories differ. We strive to give readers choices and let them decide. When helping people look for fun books, librarians emphasis how stories share components of their story lines.

(Quantum Physics now proves this) We are all governed by a set of Universal Laws, and these laws were created by GOD, to aid us in creating the life we desire. One of these laws is known as the "Law Of Attraction", or the law of "Reaping and Sowing". This law simply states, whatever you give out in Thought, Word, Feeling, and Action is returned to us. Whether the return is negative, or positive, failure or success, is all up to what you give out. Many authors and celebrities such as, Wayne Dyer, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Steve Harvey, Rhonda Byrne, and many others have testified to this amazing Law Of Attraction. Its time you learn this wonderful secret... No requirement is necessary. A link will be provided for you once you purchase the gig. You can provide your e mail if you like. You can purchase this audio on Fiverr for only $5 here: I will give you my 1hr long affirmation as a Mp3 Download. Everything that we repeatedly say to ourselves out loud or in our thoughts are an affirmation. The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a part of our brain that makes words that get repeated over time as part of our identity, positive or negative. Just like sowing seeds in a fruitful garden. When we water and nurture the seeds every day, they will grow (most of them). That´s like repeating an affirmation. If you have a tomato plant seed…you plant that seed…water it (focus)…can you expect to get apples? No of course not. You expect to get tomatoes. That´s how our subconscious mind works. It doesn´t care if you want the seeds you plant to grow. As long as you water and nurture them (affirm repeatedly), they will grow.

Buttered Side Down Full Audiobook by Edna FERBER by General Fiction, Humorous Fiction, Romance

04:35:51
SUBSCRIBE HERE http://goo.gl/OJrTHf TO OUR CHANNEL. FRESH CONTENT UPLOADED DAILY. Buttered Side Down Edna FERBER (1885 - 1968) "And so," the story writers used to say, "they lived happily ever after." Um-m-m—maybe. After the glamour had worn off, and the glass slippers were worn out, did the Prince never find Cinderella's manner redolent of the kitchen hearth; and was it never necessary that he remind her to be more careful of her finger-nails and grammar? After Puss in Boots had won wealth and a wife for his young master did not that gentleman often fume with chagrin because the neighbors, perhaps, refused to call on the lady of the former poor miller's son? Miss Mapp by E. F. BENSON (1867 - 1940) by Humorous Fiction Audiobooks

08:25:54
Miss Mapp by E. F. BENSON (1867 - 1940) by Humorous Fiction Audiobooks Miss Mapp E. F. BENSON (1867 - 1940) E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia series, consists of six novels and three short stories. The novels are: Queen Lucia, Lucia in London, Miss Mapp (including the short story The Male Impersonator), Mapp and Lucia, Lucia's Progress (published as The Worshipful Lucia in the U.S.) and Trouble for Lucia. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and "one-upmanship" in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Most of these works are set in the fictional village of "Tilling", which is based on the village of Rye, Sussex, England. "Mallards", the house with the garden room inhabited by Miss Mapp, and later by Lucia, is based on Lamb House, Benson's own home in Rye. Earlier, the house was the Sussex home of writer Henry James. Why Writing Fiction Is So Difficult

03:51
Comedy may be difficult to pull off, but comedians can at least gauge their success by the audience's laughter. For writers, there is no similar criterion by which to judge the success of a novel. Question: Do you prefer the process of writing either fiction or non-fiction?Jonathan Safran Foer: Well they're totally different in every way.  The thing that I value most about fiction is how free it is.  That anytime there's something that I want to pursue, I can.  If I become curious about something or, you know, something catches my fancy or seems interesting, I just do it.  I follow it.  There's no question about usefulness or unnecessary destination and with non-fiction I always felt bound, both to reality, you know, my book has something like I don't know, 80 pages of footnotes, but also to a conversation I wanted to have.  So every morning I woke up when I was writing "Eating Animals," I knew what I was going to work on.  Every morning when I wake up to write fiction, even if I'm at the end of a book, I in a very fundamental way, don't know what I'm going to work on.  Each subsequent sentence feels like a mystery or possibility anyway.  So, I was grateful to have that certainty of sort of a line of thought that I was pursuing, but it was also very difficult because I felt so constrained. Question: What's your creative process for fiction? Where do you begin?Jonathan Safran Foer: Well, I begin with nothing and I unfortunately usually end with nothing in terms of the day-to-day process, but you know, it's just a blank page.  I've never had characters before I started writing.  I've never had a moral.  I've never had a story to tell.  I've never had some voice that I found and wanted to share.  Auden, the poet, said, "I look at what I write so I can see what I think."  And that's been very true for me in my process.  I don't have a thought that I then try to articulate.  It's only through the act of writing that I try to find my own thoughts.  So, it can be quite scary because you know, it's... there's a kind of faith, I guess, that you have to have either in yourself or in the process that something good will come from filling blank pages.  And it very, very often doesn't feel that way, but every now and then you stumble upon something.  Some idea which you didn't know you had, or a feeling that you didn't know that you had.  And there's nothing like that revelation and I don't know of anywhere else in life to find it.Question: What's the hardest part about writing fiction?Jonathan Safran Foer: Zadie Smith wrote an essay about humor in The New Yorker, and she talked about the experience of going out with a bunch of stand up comedians after a show.  They went to a bar and she said they were asking each other, was it funny?  Was it funny?  Was it funny when I held off on the punch line for that extra second?  Was it funny when I pointed at that guy in the audience?  Was it funny when I delivered that joke with a straight face?  And she said, you know, they're neurotic and it's crazy and very annoying.  It just "was it funny?," "was it funny?"  But as a writer she felt jealous of them because at least they knew what the question was.  And that's the hardest thing about writing.  You don't even know what good would be.  You know, is a good book an entertaining one?  Probably not alone, otherwise, you know, Danielle Steele might be the greatest author that ever lived.  Is a good book one that conveys some kind of moral imagination?  Probably not.  Is it one that is artful?  Well, it's hard to even know what that means, but there are very, very artful books that very few people can ever get into.  Is it to be funny; is it to be sad; is it to be new; is it to be familiar; is it to describe life as people now live it; or is it to do just the opposite?  You know, there isn't any one answer, but the scary thing is that there might not be any answer.  And investing all of your days toward a question that might not have an answer or that might not have an answer that you would ever had access to, is very scary.  And that's the hardest thing about writing. Its manuscript was first written between 1796 and 1797, and was initially called First Impressions, but was never published under that title. Following revisions it was published on 28 January 1813 by the same Mr. Egerton of the Military Library, Whitehall, who had brought out Sense and Sensibility.
