AfterTaste 2015: Inside Imagination | Gary Graham
The School of Constructed Environments (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/constructed-environments-school-sce/), part of Parsons The New School for Design (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons) is pleased to sponsor: AfterTaste 2015: Inside Imagination. What does it take to imagine? We live in an era of environmental crisis and political unrest when complex systems and data analysis dictate projections of an uncertain future. Interiorists study existing places and are charged to imagine new worlds. In AfterTaste 2015 we draw inspiration from artists, educators, writers, and scientists who work to transcend what we know, to catapult culture into areas inspired and new. Part 8 of Aftertaste 2014/2015 is presented by Gary Graham, Fashion Designer. Remarks by Shannon Mattern. Designers and thinkers who cultivate the imagination conjure futures, thinking beyond problem solving to that which has not existed before. What is the spark that creates new possibilities? How can we promote and develop imaginations that can envision and create interiors for an unknown future, rather than being beholden to the past? How can we cultivate the unknown in a culture increasingly defined by big data and digital devices of distraction? Imagination alchemists, designers and experts gather to think and enact new possibilities and alternative paths through the interior of the imagination. Interview With DAVID BECKHAM for H&M HOLIDAY 2013 HD by Fashion Channel
Interview With DAVID BECKHAM for H&M HOLIDAY 2013 HD by Fashion Channel Just ahead of the Christmas holidays, the soccer star H&M Bodywear line is getting new masculine underwear and loungewear pieces. While the David Beckham Bodywear at H&M line consists mainly of boxers and briefs, this latest collection emphasizes clothes for relaxation and sleep. In one shot, Harper's daddy can be seen flexing his heavily tattooed bod as he sits in a shiny traditional East London changing room in a pair of maroon boxers. In another he can be seen raising his eyebrows as he poses in a white tee and boxer set, with one hand resting slightly above his right hip. Talking about his new range, David said: "These new pieces in my Bodywear range at H&M would make the ideal gift for any man this holiday season." Men looking forward to staying toasty indoors this winter can shop the collection for hooded sweatshirts, drawstring pajama bottoms, a grey merino wool cap and long-sleeved T-shirts and long underwear in a warm waffle weave fabric. The hunk was spotted running around East London in his pants last month. And a lot people enjoyed it because of course I was looking around to see the expressions, and how people were feeling it, and they were loving it...' 9. SOT Lauren Ezersky, Fashion Editor : 'I don't know what his name is now...P. Diddy, Sean John, I-have-I-guess-to-get-it-together. But his clothes are always together. You know, he always does a really good look that kind of runs the edge between fashion, style, but yet wearability." 10. MS Sean Combs with friend 11. SOT Sean Combs (P Diddy): "I'm happy with the collection every year, but I can't lie, this one I worked the hardest. I felt lot of the pressure, and I felt like fashion needed some flavour. You know, I felt lot of people were taking a back shit, and wanted to try to be extra subdued, because of what happened September the 11th. And you know, I'm a fighter, Americans were are fighters. New Yorker, we are fighters. And we still look good as we rebuild." 12. VS Gary Graham catwalk show 13. VS of designer giving interview to a television crew 14. SOT Gary Graham:"The theme of my show is...pretty dark, a lot of dark colors but a lot of light colors too, pretty organic colors, taken from nature, but a little industrialized. So, I kind a start with colors and then my shapes have a lot of buggy stuff, a lot of really fitted stuff, lot of natural fabrics, cottons, silk, linen, all hand dyed, but with an edge.' 15. VS of designer giving interview to a television crew STORYLINE: NEW YORK FASHION WEEK IN FULL SWING The scaled-down New York Fashion Week reached its second day. This season many designers either cancelled their shows, or showed their creations in their own showrooms rather than the Bryant Park tents, due to the economic recession. But for Sean Combs, formerly known till last year as Puff Daddy, and now as P.Diddy, money is no object. He spent $1.24 million in staging a 25-minute fashion extravaganza at the upscale Cipriani restaurant. Massive theatrical curtains, custom hardwood bleachers, and a state of the art video and sound installation transformed the venue to a glamorous runway event in order to accommodate 'la creme de la creme' of the fashion and music industry. Many remember Sean Combs in a New York criminal court, where last year he was charged of carrying a concealed weapon in a nightclub. But last Thursday, he was the center of attention, when he rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. He was planning in having his show in Paris this year, but after the tragic events last September, he decided it is more important to support the local economy and be in New York rather than anywhere else. Combs' collections are sold in 1,200 stores across the United States, and last year had a revenue of over $200 million, according to the privately held company. Last Saturday night, Sean John's collection for Fall 2002 received a standing ovation. His fitted double face cashmere evening coats, silk velvet tuxedos and, Saville Row cashmere suits got everybody by surprise. His last seasons' trade marked oversized pants, bulky shearling coats, and flashy logos gave way to slick and understated creations. Turning Montmartre flat into adaptive space perched on Paris
When tasked with adding space, functionality and light to a small-ish apartment on Montmartre- the tallest hill in Paris-, architect Alex Delaunay embraced the neighborhood’s stair culture (the local Metro has a 112-step spiral staircase, Montmartre’s Rue Foyatier has 300 steps) and created a multifunctional staircase wall to celebrate the “local climbing culture”. After opening up the apartment by removing all the non-structural partitions, Delaunay took advantage of the apartments’ longest space to create a multi-use structure housing a small office, closet and geometrical storage stairs leading up to the former-attic-turned bedroom. The furniture wall also has a window to allow daylight to pass from one side of the building to the other. The rounded stairs are sculpted from MDF (medium-density fibreboard) for a highly sculptural and affordable construction. Located on the top floor of a seven-story walk-up, the apartment’s walls were cluttered with chimney flues from the apartments below (common in Haussmann-era buildings). Delaunay opened up the walls between the flues to add storage space. In the kitchen the architect opened up more space between flues for cabinets. In contrast with the all-white walls and brushed stainless steel countertops the floors reflect the owner’s career in fashion (working with color swatches): it’s covered in 25 natural rubber strips in 14 different colors. Clothing designer takes inspiration from her mum and the East End: Vanessa, Londoner #141
Vanessa Blythe has designed a clothing line called Nina Baker, named after her mother, which she sells in markets across London and in-store in Haringey. Vanessa talks about her love for one-off pieces and her dreams for the future. 1000 LONDONERS This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view. www.1000londoners.com www.youtube.com/1000londoners www.facebook.com/1000londoners Twitter: @1000_londoners 1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. The filmmakers from Chocolate Films will be both producing the films and providing opportunities to young people and community groups to make their own short documentaries, which will contribute to the 1000 films. Visit www.chocolatefilms.com Transcript: Hackney was a place that, when I was growing up, I couldn't wait to get out of. I hated it, you know. Erm, 15 I left home, and I went abroad and I travelled the world and I caused carnage, in my way, you know. And I ended up coming back here two years ago and really sorting my life out. And I actually love Hackney now. I set up a fashion label called Nina Baker over two years ago, and I named it after my mum, because I put her through a lot of heartache over the years. This is the E5 kimono, different styles, E9 kimono. So it's really inspired around my mum and the east end, and I like that little concept to name it after places in Hackney. This is my baby, it's a one-off piece, and it's £345, and it's sequins and lining. And I love that limited edition feel, so that when someone buys this they're the only person wearing it. But no-one's bought it yet! [laughing] I do markets - Chatsworth Road market is my main one, erm Portobello Road, I go sometimes in the summer, and Sunday Upmarket down Brick Lane. I met my lovely friend Mila, who has this shop in Green Lanes called Freak Chic, and I have a rail here. This is Dirty Dorothy, we had to take her arms off because she keeps getting undressed. She's the star of Freak Chic, she's really cheap. Yeah, cheap and dirty. There's that part of me that's like; Wouldn't it be great if Nina Baker was on everyone's lips. And, you know, I had a whole collection going down London Fashion week, I'd be lying if I never thought about that. But, you know, that's a dream. But dreams do come true because I'm doing this and this was a dream. So now we're going to go to Leytonstone, to my manufacturer Murat. He's got a business there called Face Of London. I'll show you where the magic happens. I can still do the running man! I've still got it at 41. I mean, my favourite part is picking the material. I'm like a kid in a candy shop. So this is my pattern that I use. I don't have all the tools to do it at home, so I come here, cut the material – Say I was gonna make ten pieces, to cut ten pieces it would take me about two hours. And then I'd just hand it over to one of the machinists and they sew it up for me. Well it's going to be really busy this year, very busy, and I just can't wait to get started. Sorry.

GARY GRAHAM S/S 2011 FASHION SHOW - VIDEO BY XXXX MAGAZINE Gary Graham's Spring 2011 inspiration was the vision of a metropolitan girl fleeing for green meadows (inspired by fictitious female artist named 'Augustine Riley'). He envisions the adjustment of her city wardrobe blending into her newfound urban surroundings accordingly. Graham showcased his constructed-deconstructed outfits where models moved around on a graphic printed floor. With mostly neutral, earthy, black and red color palettes, his collection consisted of a lot of layered, draped pieces. We loved the strong black eye makeup, contrasting against the ultra feminine textures, the juxtaposition of hard and soft textures and the unique circular presentation. Fashion week coverage and videos directed by Indira Cesarine for XXXX Magazine Video footage by Jeffrey Gamble, Video edit by Mayumi Suzuki PAM HOGG S/S 2011 FASHION SHOW - VIDEO BY XXXX MAGAZINE The self-taught Scottish-born designer, Pam Hogg, showed a collection that displayed Britain's famous fashion eccentricity. The collection is full of drama with designs that exude the essence of punk from the eighties. The show opened with anticipation, as model Alice Dellal stomped down the runway topless, wearing little more than the animal-skin drum she was beating. Always one not afraid to shock, Hogg later had a model completely naked adorned with some nipple garnishing and a daring chastity belt. Inspiration was slightly primitive and very futuristic, think David Bowie's Space Oddity mixed with Barbarella. We saw a lot of metallic body suits, constructed body suits with dramatic belted elements juxtaposed with body revealing skin tight numbers. Always a brilliant show! Anna Wintour, Amal and George Clooney and Gary Oldman arrive at Met Gala
(7 May 2018) GEORGE CLOONEY JOKES HE'S 'THE FLOWER ON THE SIDE' NEXT TO WIFE AT MET GALA George Clooney joked that he was the "flower on the side" next to wife Amal Clooney at the Met Gala on Monday (7 MAY 2018). The couple was among the early arrivals to this year's annual fundraising fete in New York that brings out Hollywood's elite for an evening of fashion and charity. Amal Clooney, an event co-chair, wore a striking silver corseted top, matched with black slacks and a cascading metallic, rose-patterned skirt. The ensemble, from designer Richard Quinn, made a crinkling sound all the way the Met's iconic steps. Though the recent Vogue cover girl arrived with movie star husband George Clooney, the Academy Award winner knew his place. "I'm the flower on the side," he joked to reporters. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour arrived at the event in a beaded off-white Chanel gown and a cross necklace alongside her daughter, Bee Shaffer. She was asked whether this may be her last Met Gala as co-chair because of rumors she's leaving Vogue. "I hope not," Wintour simply said before heading into the soiree. The theme of this year's exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute — "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," which focuses on the influence of Catholicism on fashion — manifested itself in red, the color worn by cardinals, and fuchsia, worn by bishops. Gary Oldman and his wife Gisele Schmidt said they were thrilled to be invited by Prada to the special event. "Well we've known Mrs. Prada for a number of years and way back I did a little thing in Milan for her where I walked the runway and – so we are here as guests of Prada and you know it's a great honor," said Oldman. If Wintour's departure from Vogue is true, Oldman said "All great things I guess come to an end." "It's been an incredible run but I'm sure that this is enough for her. You know, yeah. Sometimes you just got to pack your bags," he continued. Oldman's wife Schmidt thought the religion theme was appropriate. "Well I think religion has always inspired art and creativity and costuming, so I think it's actually very appropriate. If this is the last one, it gives us something to think about," she said. Weaving the Jacquard Coat, 2013, Courtesy Gary Graham, New York
The production of the Jacquard-woven fabric used in the creation of Gary Graham's ensemble represents a collaboration between the designer's team and the Rhode Island School of Design. Pattern designer John Dana Palermo and textile designer Gina Gregorio worked with Ana Codorean in the Rhode Island School of Design Textile Department to create the woven cloth using Pointcarré software. The entire process was recorded in part because "the Jacquard loom there is amazing. It is in this garage and it is really phenomenal." Graham had the fabric for each individual pattern piece meticulously woven separately. One of the biggest challenges was achieving the right size and scale of the motif for each pattern piece in order to give the ensemble depth and a modern feel. The result is an innovative pattern of stars and snowballs that decreases in size as the eye travels upward from the hem of the coatdress: "It really should look as if it's rocketing up." http://folkartmuseum.org/folkcouture

373: Power Talk Friday: Inspired Leadership at Pollack Creates Exceptional Company Culture
Welcome to Power Talk Friday! We are very happy to introduce you to two very interesting women today. We have Susan Whalen, the president of Pollack, and Rachel Doriss, Pollack's design director, with us on the show. These women have both been in the design industry for decades and on the show today they talk to us about the types of opportunities that are available in the industry, other than doing interior design. They also talk about the leadership at Pollack and their company culture of encouraging creativity, loyalty, and longevity in their entire team. Listen in today to find out what it takes to create and lead a really exceptional business. Susan earned a BA from The University of Arizona in 1996. She was appointed as president of Pollack/Weitzner in 2017 due to her forward-thinking vision. She began her career at Polack in 1999 as studio manager, working alongside the founding creative director, Mark Pollack. There she learned every aspect of design and product development for contract and residential textiles. In 2004 she shifted to the business side to work under Rick Sullivan, the founding president. Then, in 2006, she was appointed as vice president and chief operating officer. In the position of COO, Susan took the led role in Pollack's merger with Weitzner in 2011. She is currently spearheading the implementation of a new operating system and the development of improved digital platforms to support the future growth and adaptability of Pollack/Weitzner. Susan now resides in Brooklyn, NY. In her free time, she enjoys traveling internationally and renovating her weekend home in rural Pennsylvania. Rachel has textile design in her DNA. She studied printmaking and painting and even taught batik workshops when she first entered college. But it was in the Textile Design department at the Rhode Island School of Design that she realized, for the first time, the practical application of her beloved woven and printed textile techniques. She graduated with a BFA from RISD in 1999 and designed printed silk scarves at Echo before joining the Pollack Studio in 2000. In 2007, Rachel was appointed Vice President, Associate Design Director. She took the helm as Pollack’s Design Director in 2012, overseeing the Studio and guiding the creative vision for each textile collection. In the Studio, she and her team always begin a pattern by first creating artwork by hand. Rachel’s designs for Pollack have been featured in national magazines, including Architectural Digest, Interior Design and Elle Décor, and she has been profiled on such sites as Apartment Therapy and House and Home TV. Two of her creations, “Mod” and “Curlycue,” are in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Join us today and get the inspiration do things in your firm to make it the kind of place people really want to be engaged with! Show highlights: Other kinds of career opportunities within the design industry. What really goes into textile manufacture. What it takes to become a textile designer. You get involved in the textile industry for the love of what you do, not for the money! The partnership between Pollack and Lori Weitzner. How having a collaboration, or a licensed collection works. Working with Gary Graham, a New York-based fashion designer. The need for inspiration when creating a collection. A quick run through the development of a fabric. The whole chain of love and pain that goes into the design and development of a beautiful fabric. About the really terrific "Pollack culture". Some great tips for cultivating a really successful team. Inspiring employees towards longevity with longer vacations. Really creative "First Fridays" at Pollack. An "Ugly Sweater" contest at the office! Supporting employees through difficult times. Pollack has their product in showrooms in most of the major territories. Pollack has worldwide distribution- in Asia, the UK, and France. The Laws of Style hosted by Douglas Hand - Melissa Manning
“Style is ingrained, fashion is an artifice. You can buy into fashion, you can be shown something that’s fashionable, but style is something that is part of you.” - Melissa Joy Manning SUMMARY Doug sits down with Melissa Joy Manning, a Brooklyn-based handmade jewelry designer. Manning has been handcrafting eco-friendly luxury jewelry since launching her namesake brand in 1997 and currently has stores in Brooklyn and Berkley. Manning discusses how you shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability and how companies like hers can start small and contribute to cumulative change that engenders big impact. Also discussed: style vs. fashion, jewelry vs. apparel, sustainability as a luxury concept and the trickledown effect. LONG,OTIS MOSS III,THE LATE HADDON ROBINSON,ANDY STANLEY,https://mtonews.com,http://m.worldstarhiphop.com, A N.J. high priest of a black separatist ‘hate group’ admits evading taxes after using church donations A Burlington Township man who is the chief high priest of a black separatist “hate group” admitted to a federal charge of conspiracy to evade taxes Wednesday after prosecutors said he spent $5.3 million of the church’s money to fund a lavish lifestyle and then failed to report the money to the government. Jermaine Grant, 44, who heads the Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ in Harlem, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Newark. He could face up to five years and $250,000 in fines when he is sentenced in July, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark. The church treasurer, Lincoln Warrington, 49, of Teaneck, in Bergen County, also pleaded guilty and admitted conspiring with Grant to help him divert the donations and evade taxes. Federal prosecutors said Grant failed to pay about $250,000 in taxes after misusing millions of dollars in church money between 2007 and 2015. Grant spent church funds on vacations in Florida, designer clothing, shoes, and accessories, including two Gucci handbags that cost more than $3,000 each, along with electronic devices and home furnishings. The money also was used to purchase real estate for Grant and his family in New Jersey, New York, and Florida; to pay for his children’s private-school tuition; and to buy and lease vehicles including a 2010 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van and a 2014 Kawasaki recreational vehicle, prosecutors said. His children were driven to school in a chauffeured Mercedes, according to the indictment. The church has chapters in Camden, Asbury Park, and Vineland, and Philadelphia, Coatesville, and Norristown. It is on the extremist fringe of the Hebrew Israelite movement, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. The church preaches that blacks are the “true Jews,” while “Jews are devilish impostors and white people are evil personified, deserving of death or slavery,” the Law Center says.
