Interior Design Styles: Art Deco
If you’re in the early stages of redesigning a specific room, or even the entire house, House Tipster says that choosing an interior design style to guide your inspiration will help you to create a cohesive theme. The bold geometry and decadent details of the Art Deco style is perfect to give your home a signature aesthetic focused around eye-catching luxury. Art Deco first appeared in France and flourished throughout the antebellum period between World War I and II. The introduction of innovative industry and technology in the Roaring 20s paved the way for a new bold and flashy style. Breaking away from the emphasized curves, plant inspired motifs, and organic forms of the Art Nouveau period; Art Deco incorporates gallant geometric shapes, symmetry, and lavish ornamentation to evoke Hollywood glamor. Some of the most iconic Art Deco installations are the Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center in New York City. Many contemporary hotels and urban lofts feature this style as well. So, how exactly can you incorporate Art Deco into your interior design? First add strong shapes, such as spheres, rectangles, zigzags, and chevrons. Keeping a consistent theme of shapes through each room will establish the symmetrical tendencies of Art Deco designers. Signature materials to incorporate include, aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, stained glass, and gold. Exotic items like zebra skin, Ancient Egypt-influenced art and furniture, and Pop Art will give your room the right motifs. Since Art Deco is minimalist in nature, design with a neutral color pallet. Include shades of black, brown, gray, and white accented with bold colors like red, green, and gold. When choosing furniture, focus on industrial materials and highly lacquered wood pieces. Velour material is commonly used to make rigid structures appear more comfortable and inviting. Floor lamps, table lamps, and ceiling lights constructed from striking shapes and materials will be captivating focal points for your design. Adding similar mirrors, paintings, or retro antiques will help to complete your Art Deco masterpiece. Designing with Art Deco is a fantastic way to give your space an exuberant design to match your stylish personality. For more videos about other interior design styles, follow the links below. House Tipster caught up with Michael Berman, the man behind the furniture brand Michael Berman Limited, at the fall 2017 High Point Market to talk about the finer points of furniture design. For complete House Tipster Media coverage, be sure to read the full article at https://housetipster.com/media-article/industry-events-2017/michael-berman-art-deco-designs-for-today With a self-described style like “American Transmodern,” Michael Berman’s furniture and designs are commonly described as a marriage between “understated glamour” and “welcome livability.” Michael was visiting the High Point Market this season to promote his line with none other than premium furniture manufacturer Theodore Alexander. During his time in High Point, House Tipster was granted access to a conversation with Michael and his friend, designer Christopher Grubb. As you’d expect, Michael and Christopher are a zestful pair. Comfortable Living Room Design in Art Deco Style
An Art Deco Interior Design Guide BY LAUREN FLANAGAN The Art Deco period was very popular in America and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s, a stark contrast to the more minimalist, nature-inspired Art Nouveau that preceded it. Like Art Nouveau, Art Deco affected all areas of the decorative arts and was considered very glamorous, elegant, functional, and modern. It quickly became a popular style of interior decorating as well as making its influence felt in architecture, fashion, and even car design. In interior decor, much like in architecture, the Art Deco style was all about making a big statement. Bold geometric patterns with hard angles and a clear preference for symmetry in design all symbolized the wave of an industry that was transforming the country. At the same time, the generous use of gold, steel and a variety of expensive materials spoke to the wealth that so many new industries were creating. Art Deco survived through the roar of the 20s, the Depression of the 30s and even the global conflict that engulfed the 40s before finally falling out of favor in the 50s, giving way, at least in interior decor, to Mid-Century Modern style. Despite this, Art Deco is now experiencing a resurgence. Period pieces and reproductions in this iconic style are becoming highly sought after. And while you may not want your whole home looking like it was decorated by The Great Gatsby, if you'd like to add a bit of old school flair to your living space, here's everything you need to live it up Art Deco-style. Characteristics of Art Deco Interior Design Geometric and angular forms, exotic materials, and linear decoration characterize Art Deco design. The look is strong and bold with no fussiness or romance anywhere in sight. Materials Certain materials pop up again and again in art deco interior design: stainless steel, mirrors, chrome, glass, lacquer, inlaid wood, and even exotic skins like shark and zebra. Expensive materials such as ebony, marble, and rare woods were also often used, making some Art Deco pieces accessible only to the wealthy. Common Themes There are several themes that occur regularly in Art Deco design. They include: Leaves, branches, and feathers Nudes Trapezoids Stylized animals Chevrons and zigzags Sunbursts Jagged, pointed edges inspired by skyscrapers (such as the Chrysler building) How to Decorate in the Art Deco Style If you want to incorporate some elements of Art Deco design into your home, you're in luck. It's very easy to add one or two pieces or to decorate a whole home in the distinctive style. Here are some guidelines to help you through the process. Colors Colors in Art Deco are striking and bold with a lot of contrasts. Bright and deep yellows, reds, greens, blues, and pinks mix well with silver, black, and chrome. If you want something softer try creams and beiges which were also often used in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. These colors contrast beautifully with the polished wood and lacquered furniture common to the period. Furniture Choose strong, streamlined shapes with no frills. Furniture made of exotic woods like zebrawood, as well as chrome and mirrored pieces, are great options. Art Deco furniture tends to be large in scale so don't be afraid to buy big pieces. Sideboards, armoires and generously sized chairs are all typical of the period. Fabrics Don't use any pretty florals or plaids in an art deco room. The fabrics in this style are usually either solid colors or geometric designs. For an added punch try adding highlights with cushions in solid contrasting blocks of color. A key word to remember is "bold." Floors Linoleum in abstract designs or black and white tiles are typical, as are lacquered floors. Polished parquet is also perfect for flooring. Keep in mind that floors in the Art Deco period would have been overlaid with large rugs in geometric patterns, so feel free to do that if you choose. Lighting Lights were often made of glass and chrome (which was a brand new material at the time). Glass was sometimes etched or enameled. White glass and colored Tiffany-style glass were also very common. It's still possible to find fixtures that are original to the period, but if you can't don't worry. There are a lot of reproductions for sale on the market. By incorporating these and other Art Deco elements into your décor, you can achieve the streamlined and modernist look of the Art Deco period. sources : https://www.thespruce.com/decorating-in-art-deco-style-1976535 http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/living-space/living-room/art-deco

ART DECO Style Bathroom Design (Pictures)
Art deco bathroom style guide With recent films such as The Great Gatsby and period dramas like Downton Abbey, the interest in style from the early 20th Century is stronger than ever. In particular, art deco is a style that is luxurious and never seems to go out of fashion. What is art deco? Art deco is a style which came to prominence in the 1920s and 30s. The main features being bold, geometric shapes and strong colours. The great thing about art deco is that, although it is a design from the early part of the 20th Century, individual touches can be added to make the feel as modern or retro as you like. If you want to find out more about art deco as a style, why not take a look at our handy, bite-size infographic? How to create an art deco bathroom Art deco works superbly when it comes to bathroom design, with the monochrome colours of black and white proving a popular choice. However, you don’t need to be restricted to just these – any combination of bold colours such as red and silver, dark blue and white or green and gold, all work well. You could even add colour accents through accessories such as towels or furnishings. If you’re looking to replace your whole bathroom suite, the angular shapes of art deco styles are often represented in modern bathroom furniture and fittings. Look for pedestal basins, toilets or bathroom suites that are square or angular in shape, such as the Vermont Range. Even contemporary style basins can embody art deco style. Pay attention to the style of taps you choose too – look for angular or rectangular designs, such as Cubik Taps, which add a glam, luxury feel. At the heart of the art deco style are geometric designs and bold patterns and both of these are widely available and ideal for tiles, walls and flooring. Classic black and white tiles, used either on the floor or wall, can be simple and relatively inexpensive. Sticking to wall tiles in essential areas, such as around the basin, bath or shower, is an economical way of adding tiled finishes to your bathroom. For a bit of glitz, add a few metallic or shiny mosaic tiles. With a small budget in mind, paint the remaining walls. If you love geometric designs, look out for bathroom wallpapers. There are lots of gorgeous geometric wallpapers available; just remember to pick a design suitable for use in a bathroom. For a stunning feature, paper one wall only. Bring your art deco bathroom together by adding finishing touches in the form of bathroom accessories. A wall mirror or two are essential in a bathroom and can help add light into a small room, or a bathroom without natural light. Look for bevelled mirrors with a luxury, glitzy finish, or a simple angular mirror. In terms of materials, items including frosted glass and chrome were popular in the art deco period. Choose chrome or frosted glass accessories, such as a toothbrush, soap holder, towel hook or robe hook. Even your finishing touches can make a big difference. Best colours Monochrome and subtle colour palettes are best to use here: • Bold black and white • Soft greens and oyster creams • Pastels including pink, blue, green and yellow Key features Art deco can be as traditional or modern as you like it, but some of the basic elements of the style are: • Geometric and angular patterns combined with bold curves • Exotic materials and linear decoration • No fussiness or romance • Black and white tiling • Chrome fittings, silver framed mirrors and bold coloured towels sources https://victoriaplum.com/blog/posts/art-deco-bathroom-style-guide http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/bathroom/art-deco check also https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxWEt16s9HiHopgvd7mjfxEwiP3K1n6bA

It is perfectly appointed, with a full range of open shelves providing storage for one’s favorite spirits and bar tools. Sophisticated styling and superb design make this one of the finest Art Deco pieces we have ever seen. Accompanied by four chrome-framed, upholstered stools, this bar is fully restored and in excellent condition. Circa 1925 70 1/2" length x 17 1/4" deep x 45 9/16" high Stools: 33 1/4" high The Art Deco style of the 1920s and 1930s was a conscious effort to simplify the elaborate Art Nouveau, reflecting the machine-age ideals of speed and glamour. Sleek, streamlined forms connote the elegance and sophistication of this new found, casual lifestyle. Inviting and functional furnishings soon evolved, making entertaining comfortable as well as trendy. The beautifully lacquered woods, chrome mounts and glass elements exhibited in this wonderful bar are characteristic of the popular materials of the period. By 1935, the Art Deco phenomena declined in favor of the more extreme forms of Modernism. Today, the furnishings of this bygone era are enjoying an amazing resurgence in popularity, in which quality pieces such as this example are becoming increasingly scarce.

The beautiful designs and patterns of the art deco era has been brought to life by the popular movie "The Great Gatsby" Art deco has a uniquely distinct style that relies upon geometric patterns and metallics. All things shiny such as chrome, glass, stainless steel and mirrors were used to give art deco the very bold and glamorous look that is recognised for. Take a tour around 1930s art deco time capsule house
Aaron Whiteside, 36, transformed his modest three-bedroom semi - built in 1937 - into a 1930s themed home. The bachelor from Blackpool, Lancashire, recalls browsing junk shops aged five, picking up an old radiogram, hoover, mincers and gas lamps during trips with his grandmother's sister. Since then he has slowly become enamoured with the decade's style and way of life. He bought his current home for £87,000 in 2007 after it had stood empty for nearly a decade. The enthusiast has worked tirelessly to transform the house - installing German wallpaper (main picture) which was buried in a time capsule in the 1930s and cost him £100 a roll. So what is the Art Deco design as it pertains to automobile design? The cars of the Art Deco era featured swooping fenders, long hoods, and highly streamlined shapes. Unlike the cars of today, they weren't just about simple transportation -- they were about making bold statements and high style. These styling cues spilled over to more affordable American cars as well, like the now-famous Chrysler Airflow. In 1934, ninth-ranked Studebaker came out with a daring new design. Heavily influenced by the Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow of 1933, the avant-grade Land Cruiser was available in the Dictator, Commander and President series. The highly-stylized Land Cruiser body featured a unique four-window pane rear view, couple with a sloping fastback style that was influenced by European streamline designs of the period. The laid back grille and a belt molding that followed the slope of the streamlined rear gave the car the appearance of motion while standing still. Other innovative styling features included the horizontal louvers on the hood sides, spare tire integrated into the body shell and fully-skirted rear fenders. Optional this last year of the Commander Land Cruiser are twin fender mounted spares. Studebaker model-year production dropped 27% to 43,682 total units and Studebaker then slipped to ninth in the industry. Art Deco styling cues on this very rare Commander are the slooping fenders, the tall radiator with the familiar Art Deco design. Also note the chrome accent pieces on the fender skirts and back trunk lid plus the door handles. There are also the five-window rear glass which is very unusual but also hark to the Art Deco era. Notice also the front hood handle lifts. The interior is lavished with real wood dash, steering wheel and trim. Under the hood lies a 250 cube engine. This rare example of Art Deco decorating a moving vehicle is extraordinaire. Thanks very much for viewing this rare 1935 Studebaker Commander Land Cruiser.

25 Minimalist Art Deco Style
Art Deco is a distinctively ornate style that originated in France before rising to international popularity in the 1920s through the 1940s. Yet its elaborate aesthetic continues to influence contemporary design and architecture – the sharp geometric patterns, the love of bold color, and the emphasis on modern manufacturing and technology haven't gone anywhere. The only thing that's changed is the implementation.

ART DECO Bedroom design to steal
What is ART DECO? ART MOVEMENT Art Deco, also called style moderne , movement in the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Its name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Its products included both individually crafted luxury items and mass-produced wares, but, in either case, the intention was to create a sleek and antitraditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. The distinguishing features of the style are simple, clean shapes, often with a “streamlined” look; ornament that is geometric or stylized from representational forms; and unusually varied, often expensive materials, which frequently include man-made substances (plastics, especially Bakelite; vita-glass; and ferroconcrete) in addition to natural ones (jade, silver, ivory, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal). Though Art Deco objects were rarely mass-produced, the characteristic features of the style reflected admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent design qualities of machine-made objects (e.g., relative simplicity, planarity, symmetry, and unvaried repetition of elements). Among the formative influences on Art Deco were Art Nouveau, the Bauhaus, Cubism, and Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Decorative ideas came from American Indian, Egyptian, and early classical sources as well as from nature. Characteristic motifs included nude female figures, animals, foliage, and sun rays, all in conventionalized forms. Most of the outstanding Art Deco creators designed individually crafted or limited-edition items. They included the furniture designers Jacques Ruhlmann and Maurice Dufrène; the architect Eliel Saarinen; metalsmith Jean Puiforcat; glass and jewelry designer René Lalique; fashion designer Erté; artist-jewelers Raymond Templier, H.G. Murphy, and Wiwen Nilsson; and the figural sculptor Chiparus. The fashion designer Paul Poiret and the graphic artist Edward McKnight Kauffer represent those whose work directly reached a larger audience. New York City’s Rockefeller Center (especially its interiors supervised by Donald Deskey; built between 1929 and 1940), the Chrysler Building by William Van Alen, and the Empire State Building by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon are the most monumental embodiments of Art Deco. During the 1930s the style took over South Beach in Miami, Florida, producing an area known as the Art Deco historic district. Although the style went out of fashion in most places during World War II, beginning in the late 1960s there was a renewed interest in Art Deco design. Into the 21st century Art Deco continued to be a source of inspiration in such areas as decorative art and fashion and jewelry design. sources https://www.britannica.com/art/Art-Deco http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/bedroom/art-deco

Mercedes-Benz's latest concept car takes its design cues from art deco
This concept car from Mercedes-Benz pairs future technology with elements of the past, featuring a design inspired by art deco. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, is designed to offer a glimpse of what the German auto brand's luxury models could one day look like. The two-seater car is primarily designed as an electric model, and is powered by four battery-operated motors that offer over 500 kilometres of driving distance. However, through its design, the company was keen to reflect the luxurious look of classic cars – taking cues from the art deco period for the shell, and creating a "haute couture" interior decked out in high-quality materials. "The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is a car which, with its sensual, emotionally appealing design and innovative technical concept solutions, defines the ultimate in luxury of the future," said Mercedes-Benz. "At the same time, the two-seater model pays homage to the glorious automotive haute couture of hand-finished, exclusive cabriolets." "The glamorous cabriolet reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extravagant way and combines intelligent beauty with classic, aesthetic proportions and a reduced, 'technoid' appearance." 7 Architecture Facts pt.43 | Victorian, Texas, Chrysler & Art Deco
This is a video about 7 facts in architecture. They are as follows; El Castillo is a Mayan temple in Yucatan, Mexico. It was built between the 9th and 12th centuries. The pyramid has four sides, 91 steps, and one large step at the top, which matches the days in an annual solar cycle and adds up to our solar year of 365; Foster and Partners won the competition to reconstruct the Reichstag building in Berlin, Germany. The original parliament building was constructed in 1894. The reconstruction includes a dramatic glass dome with a mirrored tornado-like structure and 360-degree views of the city; The Chrysler Building in New York City was designed by William Van Allen in the Art Deco style for Walter Chrysler. The building was completed in 1930. The top of the building is well known for its terraced semi-circular groin vaults and metal cladding; The Victorian era is associated with Queen Victoria’s reign in the United Kingdom. Stylistic features of these buildings include towers, large cornices, intricate woodwork, protruding gables, and mansard roofs and pediments at windows and doors; Tadao Ando was a boxer when he left high school. He eventually taught himself architecture—and successfully so. One of his many projects is the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas. The building features a delicate balance of materials such as water, glass, metal, and concrete; H.H. Richardson designed the Watts Sherman House in Newport, Rhode Island. The house marks the beginning of what was termed the Shingle style. This style became popular in the latter part of the 19th century, at the end of the Victorian era; Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The tower’s floors are cantilevered from a central elevator core. The 19-story tower is concrete, with aluminum windows and doors, and decorative exterior copper panels. This is a video series about facts in architecture. The 15 second videos featured in the series are created by Doug and posted every day on his Instagram account @dougpatt. http://www.howtoarchitect.com https://www.instagram.com/dougpatt/
