JavaScript Tutorial For Beginners #37 - Adding Elements to the DOM

07:44
Hey all! So for I've taught you how to change existing content in the DOM, but in this JavaScript tutorial I want to show you how to add new elements too! To do this we use the createElement method, and then insert the new element into the DOM by using either one of the following methods: appendChild(child) insertBefore(child, element) If you have any questions, fire away :) SUBSCRIBE TO CHANNEL - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW5YeuERMmlnqo4oq8vwUpg?sub_confirmation=1 ========== JavaScript for Beginners Playlist ========== https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cUxeGkcC9i9Ae2D9Ee1RvylH38dKuET ========== CSS for Beginners Playlist ========== https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cUxeGkcC9gQeDH6xYhmO-db2mhoTSrT ========== HTML for Beginners Playlist ========== https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cUxeGkcC9ibZ2TSBaGGNrgh4ZgYE6Cc ========== The Net Ninja ============ For more front-end development tutorials & to black-belt your coding skills, head over to - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW5YeuERMmlnqo4oq8vwUpg or http://thenetninja.co.uk ========== Social Links ========== Twitter - @TheNetNinja - https://twitter.com/thenetninjauk

jQuery add event handler to dynamically created element

09:15
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/04/jquery-add-event-handler-to-dynamically.html In this video we will discuss, how to add event handlers to dynamically created elements. Let us understand this with an example. The following example, allows us to dynamically create new list item (li), attach a click event handler and add it to the unordered list (ul). This happens when you click "Add a New List Item" button. The problem with this approach is that we are binding a click event handler to every list item. This means if you have 500 list items, then there will be 500 event handlers in the memory and this may negatively affect the performance of your application. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { var newListItem = $('<li>New List Item</li>').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('ul').append(newListItem); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html> A better way of doing the same from a performance standpoint is shown below. In this example, the click event handler is attached to the listitem (li) parent element (ul). Even if you have 500 list items, there is only one click event handler in memory. So how does this work 1. When you click on a list item (li), the event gets bubbled up to its parent (ul) as the list item (li) does not have an event handler 2. The bubbled event is handled by the the parent (ul) element, as it has a click event handler. 3. When a new list item is added dynamicaly, you don't have to add the click event handler to it. Since the newly created list item (li) is added to the same parent element (ul), the click event of this list item also gets bubbled upto the same parent and will be handled by it. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('ul').on('click', 'li', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { $('ul').append('<li>New List Item</li>'); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html>

JavaScript DOM Tutorial - Element.insertAdjacentElement()

07:27
Similar to both the appendChild() and insertBefore() methods, the insertAdjacentElement() method within the JavaScript Document Object Model lets you insert an HTML Element relative (or adjacently) to another HTML Element. This particular method can provide you a lot of flexibility when inserting an element due to its four possible positions of insertion: beforebegin, afterbegin, beforeend and afterend. In this video I take you through a visual example of how exactly this method works - it's quite straightforward and I hope you can make use of it in your next web project! The DOM: What's the Document Object Model?

02:50
The DOM: What's the Document Object Model? The DOM is the browser's internal, progrematic representation of a webpage. Languages like javascript allow you to modify the DOM, and thus the website without editing the HTML of the page. Technically, the DOM is an API (application programming interface). There are many types of APIs, but this particular API interacts with XML and HTML documents. It's in charge of how those documents are accessed and manipulated. Really, you can do a lot with the dom, and if you're already scripting in JS and jQuery, you're already doing it. You can insert new things, elements, or alter style or content for elements that already exist. This can be done with pure javascript, like: document.getElementById(id) element.getElementsByTagName(name) document.createElement(name) You can also use libraries like jQuery to simplify, standardize and automate manipulating the DOM, like: $('#box2').append("This will be added to box2!")

What is the querySelector method in JavaScript? | Document.querySelector() Explained

06:41
In JavaScript, the 'querySelectorAll' method allows you to retrieve a list of Elements that match the CSS Selector that you specify. Essentially, it is a way of finding Elements in JavaScript. It's quitee flexible and lets you search for tags, classes, IDs, parent/child combinations, attributes and so on. In this video I show you a clear and simple example of how it works on the 'document' object as well as another Parent Node - to only search within that parent. JavaScript Tutorial - getAttribute setAttribute & hasAttribute

07:39
These methods are defined on the Element interface. DOMString? getAttribute(DOMString name); void setAttribute(DOMString name, DOMString value); void removeAttribute(DOMString name); boolean hasAttribute(DOMString name); The getAttribute(name) method must run these steps: If the context object is in the HTML namespace and its node document is an HTML document, let name be converted to ASCII lowercase. Return the value of the first attribute in the context object's attribute list whose name is name, and null otherwise. The setAttribute(name, value) method must run these steps: If name does not match the Name production in XML, throw an "InvalidCharacterError" exception. If the context object is in the HTML namespace and its node document is an HTML document, let name be converted to ASCII lowercase. Let attribute be the first attribute in the context object's attribute list whose name is name, or null if there is no such attribute. If attribute is null, create an attribute whose local name is name and value is value, and then append this attribute to the context object and terminate these steps. Change attribute from context object to value. The removeAttribute(name) method must run these steps: If the context object is in the HTML namespace and its node document is an HTML document, let name be converted to ASCII lowercase. Remove the first attribute from the context object whose name is name,if any. The hasAttribute(name) method must run these steps: If the context object is in the HTML namespace and its node document is an HTML document, let name be converted to ASCII lowercase. Return true if the context object has an attribute whose name is name, and false otherwise. https://github.com/webtunings https://www.facebook.com/pages/WebTunings/339234242822202 I highly recommend this book for beginners as well as advanced programmers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0596805527/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0596805527&linkCode=as2&tag=webtuningscom-20

Change the way a page looks

How to change a page's "styles" in/with JavaScript Please note this is client side. If you couldn't catch what I wrote, here it is, BUT YouTube randomly adds spaces into typed code. Eg the word da ta javascript:var nuStyle=document.createElement('link');nuStyle.rel='stylesheet';nuStyle.href='data:text/css,* {background:#FFF !important; color:#000 !important} :link {color:#00F !important} :visited {color:#93C !important}';void(document.documentElement.childNodes[0].appendChild(nuStyle));
