Chris Painter gave an overview of what it's like to be a product manager and talked about our part-time product management course curriculum. He also shared secrets on what it takes to become a Product Manager and answered various questions about product management. Chris Painter has spent the past 20 years developing, managing, and launching at scale unique hardware and software experiences in both Japan and the US. He started his career in Japan, joining the team that designed the ThinkPad laptops. He eventually found his way to Sony Japan doing product design on the VAIO laptops. It was at Sony where he was able to get his start in product management and his passion for bringing together hardware and software experiences. He brought that to his own startup which focused on building an online streaming media experience. Though not hugely successful, this ultimately helped to create new experiences at Comcast that became the new Xfinity X1 UI, and ultimately the very successful Amazon FireTV and FireTV stick product experiences. He carried his personal passion for photo and video capture to GoPro where he led a team of product managers developing new ways to capture, manage and share your life’s most memorable moments. Bitten once again by the startup bug, Chris now heads up product at a robotics startup focused on last mile delivery. Product Management and the Roadmap with Lauri Hofherr

57:26
A well constructed roadmap can be a Product Manager's best friend. Everything we do is rooted in the principle of communicating early and often in a multitude of media. A product roadmap is all about communicating your vision and provides a framework for conversations with everyone from the C-suite to your desk neighbor. A 12 to 18-month roadmap is not the end-all-be-all but it is an essential starting point for the journey of successfully delivering quality software. --- Lauri Hofherr is a Sr. Technical Product Manager at Morningstar, Inc., working with the Platform teams building the next generation of professional research and portfolio management products as well as overseeing User Identity Management. After a successful career in the financial services industry that evolved from analyst to directing technology projects as business owner, Lauri began consulting for Obtiva in 2007 as an Agile Business Analyst and Coach. In 2010, she arrived at Groupon and joined the then 40 person engineering team, eventually serving as Sr. TPM, Deal Supply Chain. Lauri received her first multi-media email from Steve Jobs on her NeXT computer, nicknamed black_squiggy, and holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri.

02:45
Learn how to plan, develop and deliver on all aspects of work in the lifecycle of digital products using lean, agile and systems design thinking. Take this course for free on edx.org: https://www.edx.org/course/product-management-lean-agile-system-bux-qd503x-0 Want to be the “CEO” of the digital product, but unsure which types of skillsets you may need? This course is for you. Product management drives the implementation of business models in startups and digital enterprises. Learn about the key decisions, underlying tradeoffs, and implementation decisions needed for each phase of the product life and master business and organizational logic to ensure product success in the marketplace. In this course, part of the Digital Product Management MicroMasters program, you will be introduced to frameworks for decision-making based on both economic and organizational considerations. These frameworks inform a rising product manager on how to: (i) understand customer co-creation, needs and become “a champion” for user centric development in the digital technologies. (ii) set up and manage specific work flows (e.g. either lean, agile or stage gate development tasks) that result in timely launch and upgrades of products. (iii) take a data and metrics driven approach to make product life cycle decisions including pricing, versioning, maintenance, helpdesks and end of life. (iv) shape the direction of the product based on experimentation and system design thinking by learning from product roadmaps, competitive considerations, and allied evolution of demand in digital markets. Caveat: This is not a course on software development or architecture or on product marketing. The role of a product manager is to work with these functions effectively, such that the interests of a product (e.g. its profitability) and its customers are best served. Thus, the perspectives and skills covered in this course are integrative, and allied with decision-making, in their orientation. What you'll learn Product line planning and road mapping alternatives Idea generation, customer need assessment, co-creation, definition and validation of minimal viable product (MVP) and allied set up of requirement documents Alternative approaches for lean, agile and waterfall development, along with the tools for assessing task, project and business risks (and risk mitigation strategies) at scrums or at stage gates. IBM Tape History - Session 2: Overview of Tape Products and Product Management Part 1

03:11:47
Interviewed by Tom Gardner on 2015-10-13 in Tucson AZ X7617.2016 © Computer History Museum This is session two of five sessions held in Tucson, AZ, regarding IBM’s tape storage history. The five sessions are: 1. Tape Media (CHM catalog number: 102737991) 2. Overview of tape products and product management (CHM catalog number: 102737993) 3. 3480 tape drive (CHM catalog number: 102738020) 4. Linear Tape Open (LTO) Consortium (CHM catalog number: 102738022) 5. Recovery of tapes damaged in Challenger disaster (CHM catalog number: 102738024). See IBM Tape History Session 1: Media for an overview of IBM Tucson. This session is broadly focused on IBM’s development and management of tape products. Within IBM product management has been distinguished from system management; well into the 1990s product development was the responsibility of a Lab Director whose direct reports would include engineering managers for the various products assigned as well as a Product Manager having one or more subordinates responsible for business aspects of the product. Today’s session includes a Tucson Lab Director (Teale) and two tape product managers (Levine and Rizzi). * Note: Transcripts represent what was said in the interview.
