Boys tend to be disorganized and restless. Some have even been known to be noisy and hard to manage. Sound like any boy you know? But increasingly, our schools have little patience for what only a couple of decades ago would have been described as “boyishness.” As psychologist Michael Thompson has aptly observed: “Girls behavior is the gold standard in schools. Boys are treated like defective girls.” As a result, these “defective girls” are not faring well academically. Compared with girls, boys earn lower grades, win fewer honors they’re are far less likely to go to college. Boys are languishing academically, while girls are prospering. In an ever more knowledge-based economy, this is not a recipe for a successful society. We need to start thinking about how we can make our grade school classrooms more boy-friendly. Well, here are four reforms that would make a very good start. 1. Turn boys into readers. In all age groups, across all ethnic lines, boys score lower than girls on national reading tests. Good reading skills -- need I say? -- are critical to academic and workplace success. A major study in the UK discovered, not surprisingly, that girls prefer fiction, magazines, and poetry while boys prefer comics and non-fiction. Boys whose eyes glaze over if forced to read Little House on the Prairie may be riveted by the Guinness Book of Records. Boys will read if given materials that interest them. If you’re looking for suggestions for books that have proved irresistible to boys go to guysread.com. 2. Inspire the male imagination. Celebrated writing instructor Ralph Fletcher contends that too many teachers take what is called “the confessional poet” as the classroom ideal. Personal narratives full of emotions and self-disclosure -- these are stories girls commonly write -- and these are prized; whereas action stories describing, say, a skateboard competition or a monster devouring a city, these are not. I recently read about a third-grader in Southern California named Justin who loved science-fiction, pirates, and battles. An alarmed teacher summoned his parents to school to discuss the picture the 8-year-old had drawn of a sword fight -- which included several decapitated heads. The teacher expressed grave “concern” about Justin’s “values.” The boy’s father was astonished, not by his son’s drawing which to him was typical boy stuff, but by the teacher’s overwrought -- and female-centered -- reaction. If boys are constantly subject to disapproval for their interests and enthusiasms they are likely to become disengaged and lag further behind. The suit filed Monday in California also alleges the company discriminates against men and white employees. Airline companies Virgin Australia and Qantas have a policy which prohibits males from sitting next to unaccompanied minors on their airplanes. Recent Virgin airlines passenger, John McGirr claims Virgin airlines treated him like a sexual predator on a flight to Sydney. He claims a flight attendant asked him to move saying he was not allowed to sit next to children because he was male. (His correct action would have been to insist loudly to embarrass Virgin that the children were moved having paid for his seat) According to Mr McGirr the flight attendant walked up the aisle and tried to find a female to swap seats with him. "By that time, people had looked around and it was like I'd done something wrong, (I felt) defenceless. Usually I like to have a good argument and stand up for myself but I just sort of swallowed my pride and left," Mr McGirr said. According to barrister David Gallbally the policy is aimed particularly and only at men. "On the face of it, the police certainly does seem to be discriminatory," Mr Gallbally said. "I think the Sex Discrimination Commissioner should act on this immediately and shouldn't let it continue." (Unfortunately in Australia the Commissioner is always a rabid Lesbian who is actually part of the problem) It is also well proven that most molesters are Homosexual or that way inclined a fact hidden from the general public to protect the image of Gays in the Media & deceive the public about what they really are, under the guise of equality. Virgin airlines has declined an interview, but in a statement they say their policy is "based on customer feedback and is common to many airlines". In light of Mr McGirr's complaint, Virgin said in a statement that they are "finalising a new policy...pending the outcome of a formal risk assessment". According to 2005 figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 30.2 per cent of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by a male relative. The least likely perpetrator is a stranger at 11.1 per cent. The stigma of males working with children can seen in schools, where male teachers becoming an endangered species. Steven Badger runs one of the country's most successful swim schools but he fears political correctness is scaring men out of his industry. "The suspicion that because I'm a male, their child is at some risk, because I am taking the class rather than a female member of staff. It offends me," Mr Badger said. The governing authority, AUSTSWIM, now trains teachers to ask permission every time a child in a class needs to be held or touched. "Put it this way, I am yet to be convinced that any of these measures have actually protected one extra child," Mr Badger said. President of the Australian Primary Principals Association Norm Hart believes it is the fear of litigation and of being judged that makes young men stay away from the teaching profession. "We're all disassociating ourselves from children and I think that's quite sad. There's nothing more important than educating the next generation and we should have our brightest and best, both men and women, doing that work," Mr Hart said. According to Dr Karen Brooks, associate professor at the UQ Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, society risks alienating men on a wide scale. She claims the consequences of the idea that all men are predators is damaging. "What it means is it will change the way we perceive each other, the way we interact, and it is already modifying our behaviours," Dr Brooks said. "APS staff working in human resources roles applied strong affirmative action in favour of both females and minorities: they were 9.0% more likely to shortlist females and 41.4% more likely to shortlist female minorities, compared to the de-identified condition." "The results from this trial demonstrate that, on the whole, public servants engage in positive discrimination towards female and minority candidates. De-identification of CVs in such a context has the effect of decreasing the number of female and minority candidates shortlisted for executive level APS positions. " This study is contested by the results of other studies so I wanted to focus on the government's reaction to the findings more than the findings themselves. In the current climate of gender quotas, it is no surprise that both new managers are women. As I scrolled down through this article I saw that they both wanted to work on “inclusion” at Uber. I wondered what they meant by inclusion? It sounds so lovely. "Inclusion is feeling comfortable enough to dance. (Well that’s good, I like dancing, although I am not sure how that is linked to running a business) We have to become a place where all sorts of differences are celebrated." Now, the term “all sorts of differences” is just a little suss to me. I suspect that they aren’t worried about hiring people who are good at different types of dancing. However, I was curious and wanted to know more about their idea of “inclusion”… So I typed “Uber diversity” into a search engine ((not google… for search engine diversity reasons of course) to see what I would find, after eagerly clicking the first search result I was confronted with this graphic. It ticks all of the gender “diversity” boxes, one, two, three, four women One, two, three, four men. Boys and girls are even arranged in a systematic pattern to prove how included and cohesive they are. Two white women, one with short hair and facial piercings and one with blonde hair. Combine this with a woman who may be Arabic or Hispanic or better yet a mix of both and then a woman of African decent we have “diversity” sorted out on the women’s side. Now looking at the men, we have a man who seems to be from the subcontinent, perhaps Indian, then a man who has some African perhaps mixed with some Mediterranean or Arabic. Then we have a generic Asian guy with IT business style shirt. Look at that cheeky grin, he is so happy in the inclusion. Finally we have another possibly Arabic man.…… Uber seems to have perfected diversity… except… ummmm… no white men. The barbaric, racist and anti intellectual assumption that your skin colour determines who you are as a person seems to apply at Uber too. And it’s becoming quite clear that diversity is simply code for “not white”. But this is just a picture, I wonder what insightful comments accompany this… Scrolling down I discover that Uber wants to include many groups including… Black people Women Hispanic people Gay people Jewish people. And of course, muslim people. Hmmm, seems that men and white people and of course Christians are not diverse. Seems uber doesn’t include me because of the colour of my skin. Think about history… Does this sound familiar? Show racist slide Yep, this definition is a great fit for Uber. Uber goes on to say that it wants to “develop plans for increasing the number of employees from underrepresented groups”. It then shows that 46% of U.S.A employees are white. However according to the 2010 U.S census 72.4% of Americans are white. So, white people are very underrepresented at Uber, It’s really clear that when uber speaks about diversity and underrepresentation it really just means systematically fire and don’t hire white people. Scrolling down further and 76.7% of people at Uber in leadership positions in the U.S.A are white which is roughly in line with the general population. However the comments from Uber are as follows: “Our leadership is more homogenous than the rest of our employees. For example, no Black or Hispanic employees hold leadership positions in tech. This clearly has to change—a diversity of backgrounds and experience is important at every level. (diversity of experience may be beneficial to a company because it can increase productivity but this is not related to what Uber is doing which is hiring simply based on race and gender) And research shows that leaders from diverse backgrounds are more likely to hire diverse teams themselves.” This infantile and deeply anti intellectual obsession with skin colour and genitals deeply concerns me about the future direction of our civilisation. Uber’s agenda is quite clear, hire less men and in particular white men. I fear the only real “difference” they want to see is skin colour. Specifically, any colour that isn’t white. At this stage I’m just speculating but, this sounds close to the definition of racism to me, wait let me check. ra¦cist [ˈreɪsɪst] NOUN 1. a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races,….. Clearly Uber is showing prejudice against races by assuming that race accounts for “all kinds of differences”. This is a very strong judgment and presumably based on nothing factual.
