Description: Men's Mental Health: A Silent Crisis Karen Straughan Tour of South Western Ontario Recorded on February 27th, 2018 London Public Library Central Branch Event hosted by Canadian Association for Equality London ****************************************************************** When women begin to slip into crisis, they often have greater access to social and formal systems that can help them apply the brakes. Social networks to lean on, family members who understand the warning signs women give, government programs, crisis centres, shelters, counselling largely tailored to their psychological needs, special, and gender-prioritized assistance with housing, recovery, employment and ongoing coping strategies. Men are much more likely to lack access to any or all of these important obstacles that halt the downward spiral, and they are therefore more likely to find their way to the very bottom. Meet Mark Smith, a military veteran and amputee strongman. Smith served ten years for the Grenadier Guards, touring in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. However, it was on a Canadian firing range when he lost his leg. Determined not to let such a thing beat him, Smith spent every free moment in the gym and his interest in strongman training began to grow. Smith was crowned Britain’s Strongest Disabled Man in 2016 and 2017 and won disabled strongman events at the Arnold Classic in 2017 and 2018. His message to others is clear: surround yourself with positive people, don’t sit still, keep moving forward – and pick up some heavy things, then put them down again. That’s an order.

3-MINUTES TO THICKER ARMS from BJ Gaddour, former Men's Health fitness director and MetaShred creator! Everyone who wants bigger arms hammers their biceps and triceps but often forget about the brachialis. It’s the elbow flexor sandwiched right in-between the biceps and triceps that adds thickness to the arms- kind of like an NFL linebacker. Ladies, I know that may not be as appealing to you. But rest assured, this routine will NOT give you man-arms. But it will make your arms pop in a sleeveless dress or tank top. The brachialis is preferentially targeted when you use a palm-facing neutral or hammer-grip. This also happens to be the curling and pulling grip that is easiest on the wrists, elbows, and shoulders for those with joint issues. Perform each move for max quality reps in a minute back-to-back-to-back: 1. Hammer-Grip Pullups 2. Hammer-Grip Dumbbell Curls 3. Hammer-Grip Band Curls That’s 1 round. Do a single round as a starter or finisher. If you do multiple rounds, rest at least 2 minutes between rounds. Can’t do pullups? Just do assisted pullups using a band or with your feet on the floor or use an assisted pullup machine at the gym. You could also modify with hammer-grip inverted rows.
