Joel & Ethan Coen - Shot | Reverse Shot

07:05
How do you film a conversation? Most likely, you’re going to block the actors, set up the camera, and do shot/reverse shot. But where do you put the camera? What lens do you use? And how do you cut back and forth? Today, I consider the Coen brothers — Joel & Ethan — and see how these choices lend a particular feel to their version of shot/reverse shot. No Country For Old Men: Ending Explained

11:55
The Coen brothers’ 2007 film No Country for Old Men is not your typical Western: the hero doesn’t win, or even survive, the villain gets away, and the ending isn’t a shootout but rather a slow, calm, monologue by a character who was the least involved of the three main characters. The final scene, much debated by fans and critics, does however give us a window into the movie’s deeper meaning and the Coens’ pessimistic worldview. Josh Brolin on ‘Hail, Caesar!’, the Coen Brothers and Playing Thanos in 'Avengers: Infinity War'

13:45
Over the past decade Josh Brolin has shown again and again his incredible range. From his great work in such films as No Country for Old Men, W., True Grit, Men in Black 3 (he was the highlight), Sicario, Milk, Oldboy, and many others, Brolin has become one of the reasons I want to see a movie. Which brings me to Joel and Ethan Coen’s great new movie Hail, Caesar! In their latest film, which opens this weekend, Brolin stars as Eddie Mannix, an old-time Hollywood fixer who has a reputation for keeping actors’ scandals out of the press. But when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped and held for ransom by a group calling themselves "The Future", Mannix is tasked with collecting the $100,000 demand and rescuing the star. It’s a classic Coen Brothers set-up and it gives them their first opportunity to delve into the madness of Hollywood since Barton Fink. Hail, Caesar! also stars Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, and Alden Ehrenreich. A few days ago at the Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with the busy actor. He talked about getting to work with the Coens multiple times, winning the “actor’s lottery”, memorable moments from filming Hail, Caesar!, how he’s planning on directing next year, his thoughts on a Goonies sequel, how excited he is to play Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2, and so much more. Check out what he had to say below. Josh Brolin 0:00 – Jokes about becoming a little “feral”. 1:11 – On winning the “actor’s lottery” by getting to work with the Coens multiple times along with other great directors; also touches on his audition for ‘No Country for Old Men’ 3:12 – What it’s like auditioning for the Coen Brothers. 4:15 – Memorable moments from filming. 5:47 – If he has any plans to direct, and his approach to starring in movies. 7:16 – Why he’s excited for Thanos to finally stand up. 9:40 – How the people in his personal life relate to the roles they play. 11:30 – Why he wanted to become an actor. 12:40 – If he thinks there will ever be a Goonies sequel. A Serious Man - Trailer - High Quality - Coen Brothers

01:35
More info: http://www.pearlanddean.com/?node_id=1.2.1&id=9390 Academy Award winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen bring their famously wicked sense of humor to this every day tale about a moral man who sees the world inexplicably turn against him in this darkest of comedies. Larry Nidus is a good man. He is a loving husband, a committed father, and a dedicated professor who always does the fair and just thing in the face of daily temptations. But one day, everything starts to go wrong. His wife leaves him for reasons she cant explain, and her smug new lover manages to convince Larry that he should be the one to move out of the house and into a cheap motel all for the childrens benefit, of course. Then Larrys career is put into jeopardy by a series of anonymous letters falsely accusing him of unnamed treacheries. And when his wifes new partner dies in a car accident, she insists that he should foot the bill for the funeral! Now the cash strapped Larry finds himself paying to bury a man he hates, bailing his gambling addicted brother out of jail, and desperately trying to save his name and his career in academia. Yet, in spite of it all, we cant help but laugh as we contemplate Larrys plight in a world with no silver linings that might just seem uncomfortably familiar to us all

The Sounds of the Coen Brothers

01:49
During the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, composer extraordinaire Carter Burwell confirmed that the Coen brothers “...write knowing the importance of the sound and the music. They put space in their films for that, and a lot of people don’t, but they actually feel free to have a few minutes where there might not be any dialogue.” One of the most impressive aspects of the Coen Brothers’s work is their purposeful punctuation of silence — they intersperse such moments with sounds which fuel the imagination. The Coens are experts at doing this for dramatic purposes—in No Country for Old Men, they linger on a candy wrapper which unravels during a life or death coin toss. On the other end of the dramatic spectrum, certain creaking and squishing sounds —as heard in movies like The Hudsucker Proxy — not only improve comedic bits, but create them from scratch. Now, enough reading. Have a listen. If you can’t get enough of the Coen Brothers, watch how they use shaky cam in “Raising Arizona.” While you’re at it, check out how other directors like Paul Verhoeven, Wes Anderson, Clint Eastwood, Agnès Varda, and Andrei Tarkovsky use sound in their movies. And as always, watch Fandor’s newest videos like Color Me “Bava,” The Distinct Charm of Ewan McGregor, and How Christopher Nolan Ends a Movie.

A SERIOUS MAN (Joel et Ethan Coen) - Bande Annonce

01:35
