'Men without Chests' by C.S. Lewis Doodle (Chapter 1 of 'The Abolition of Man')

C.S. Lewis takes a look at the heartless, frigid philosophy contained in modern elementary textbooks on English Literature. This is an illustration of the first chapter of 'The Abolition of Man’ as it can be particularity hard to digest with its more than fifty literary references. This will ease you into chapters 2 and 3. Lewis mentioned in a letter to a friend that 'The Abolition of Man' was: “almost my favourite among my books, but in general has been almost totally ignored by the public” (20 February 1955). I hope this doodle starts to rectify that ignorance. In order to help you understand the meaning of the quotes, I have hunted down all of Lewis’ quotations and allusions including the notorious ‘Green Book’ itself. I have collated the original quotes, in their original context, and provided them as endnotes to a PDF document as a study aid. A most informative read, for those who wish to know more. 'The Green Book' really makes the blood boil, and it is abundantly clear why Lewis felt such a strong need to write this book: 'The Abolition of Man'. "The Abolition of Man" Simplified Part 1 "Men Without Chests" (C. S. Lewis Philosophy)

I attempt to explain, in five minutes, the first part of C. S. Lewis's incredible philosophy book, "The Abolition of Man" and it's vitally important message about ethics and value judgments. Lewis, one of the greatest Christian writers of the 20th century. Many people know he was a friend of JRR Talkien. Most people only remember him for his Chronicles of Narnia books but it's his non-fiction that he ought to be remembered for. That's what people in England wanted to hear on the radio while the Blitz was going on outside. Lewis was a classicist which means he agreed with Plato and Aristotle alot and considered himself a converted pagan in a world of apostate Christians. He had a way of introducing paradigm shifts that turn modern thought completely around. Rather than vainly trying to hit unbelievers over the head with the authority of scripture as so many would-be Christian apologists have unfortunately tried to do, Lewis defended his ideas through force of argument and tried to get people to examine and challenge their own philosophical presuppositions. The fundamentals of his philosophy are outlined in, "The Abolition of Man." The thesis of this book is that if we debunk and abolish traditional moral values and gain control over the conscience of man as science has enabled us to control other things in nature, it will result in the eventual Abolition of Man, the dehumanization of humanity. Abolish man's conscience and you abolish man. Although Lewis is a theist and argues for theism elsewhere, he makes no attempt to argue for the existence of God or any particular religion in this book. A staunch atheist could completely agree with The Abolition of Man and yet remain a staunch atheist. Lewis writes of two opposing views, the world of the Green Book and the world of the Tao. The world of the Tao is a broad generalization that contains the traditional moralities of both East and West; the Bhuddist, Christian, Confucian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Socratic all lumped together. Lewis refers to, "the sole source of all value judgements" and calls it the Tao. The Tao is, he asserts, not something we can change, for it ceases to be the Tao when we do. Judgements in the world of the Tao are right or wrong like mathematical statements. But in the world of the Green Book, all value judgements are subjective. The Green Book itself is an actual English textbook which, perhaps accidentally, teaches unwary children that all sentences containing a predicate of value are not statements about qualities inherent in their subjects but are really unimportant statements about the speaker's own feelings. Lewis first points out that this amateur philosophy is absolutely out of place in an English textbook regardless of it's validity and proceeds to tear the position to shreds anyway. Lewis wrote, "Until quite modern times all teachers and even all men believed the universe to be such that certain emotional reactions on our part could be either congruous or incongruous to it—believed, in fact, that objects did not merely receive, but could merit, our approval or disapproval, our reverence or our contempt." "The educational problem is wholly different according as you stand within or without the Tao. For those within, the task is to train in the pupil those responses which are in themselves appropriate, whether anyone is making them or not, and in making which the very nature of man consists. Those without, if they are logical, must regard all sentiments as equally non-rational, as mere mists between us and the real objects. As a result, they must either decide to remove all sentiments, as far as possible, from the pupil's mind; or else to encourage some sentiments for reasons that have nothing to do with their intrinsic 'justness' or 'ordinacy'. The latter course involves them in the questionable process of creating in others by 'suggestion' or incantation a mirage which their own reason has successfully dissipated." Lewis models the mind of man in a Platonic division of three - the head, center of intelligence, the stomach, center of desire and the chest, center of will. He argues that removing all sentiments from the mind as many modern so-called "rationalists" try to do produces, "Men Without Chests" that value judgements are an essential part of clear thinking. And that's just part 1, there are three other parts to this book.

"Man boobs" are a common problem in middle-aged males. However, you may not be particularly out of shape. just predisposed to carrying fat around your chest. While spot-reduction of fat is impossible, you can lose chest fat with a balanced diet and a workout routine that focuses on your chest muscles. You don't need a gym either. losing your man boobs can be done from the comfort of your own home. Step 1. Eat a balanced, calorie-restricted diet. In order to lose fat, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn. this is known as a calorie deficit. The United States Department of Agriculture recommends that men should consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories per day to maintain weight, depending on age and activity levels. Start off at 2,500, measure your progress once every week, and adjust your calorie intake as needed. Step 2. Base your diet around protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, along with fruits and vegetables. Charles Poliquin, owner of the Poliquin Performance Center, advises that if you're prone to carrying higher levels of body fat, you should cut grains from your diet and focus on getting your carbs from dark green and brightly colored vegetables, and low-sugar fruits. Make sure that all the meals you eat at home adhere to these guidelines and are made from scratch. Try to prepare lunches and snacks for work, so that you're not tempted to break your diet. Step 3. Perform a full-body workout at home three times per week. To lose fat from your chest you need to train your whole body, as this burns a higher number of calories and helps to develop a more balanced physique. Do three sets, of 10 each, of squats, lunges, pushups, planks, reverse crunches and squat thrusts, taking as little rest as possible between sets and exercises. Once you find this relatively easy, increase to three sets of 15. Step 4. Do pushups every day. While this won't spot-reduce fat from your chest, it will help build the muscle underneath, giving it more size and definition. Pavel Tsatsouline, strength coach and author of "Power to the People: Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American" recommends that you perform a set of push ups three or four times throughout the day, stopping just short of failure and while your form is still perfect on each set. Record your total number of push ups every day, and aim to increase this over time. It went from being shaved, which was very hard to touch, you know what, like, course, freshly shaved feels like. It's not good to touch. So just having it long enough that it hugs the body, now, I understand he gets a little bit heavier, so, you know, what we do is we trim it slightly. A man's chest should always look un-groomed. It shouldn't be too comb over, scissor, or too tightly groomed. So I don't like shaving it because it comes back in too abrupt. I do think if you want to remove it completely, waxing is probably your best bet, because it comes back in much softer. So if you wax the hair, it's much more pleasant to touch when it grows back in, because when you shave the hair it blunts out the tip. Speaker 2: Okay. Speaker 1: So you're shaving it and it's growing out, and it's growing very blunt, but when you pull it out from the root it's growing out really soft. It has a soft tip. So there is a myth that if you wax it that it comes back thicker, it's not true, because the thickness of the hair is already established by the already existing follicle. It should always feel good. It should always be approachable. You know, if it gets really opaque in some areas, that's where you want to sort of dive into it, and lean it out a little bit, but you don't want it to look too manicured. And one of the tricks up here it always leave the Adam's Apple area, underneath the Adam's Apple, this area, you want to keep it free of hair. So what I suggest is you hold down the chest hair and you dive under and you clean this area, and then you let that come up natural. So you need to keep a certain amount of hair gone between here and facial hair. And also, another thing, is, like, fading out this line a little bit. So that's a part of body hair, going right up into the neck. You want to make sure there aren't any lines. Nice.

It took some time to get around to it, but I finally decided to shave my entire chest and back, so that the world may see what I have to live with on a daily basis. The video includes some interviewing at the beginning, and some funny banter along the way. I try to time lapse as the video goes on, but if you got the time, watch the whole thing and have fun. The real shaving doesn't begin until 13 minutes in. I'd rather people see the whole process because it's not some quick decision that's easily executed. In this video, I share with you a three phase plan for losing fat in the abdomen, love handles or waistline area, and the chest. These spots are where most men carry their fat and are the last to lose it when dieting or trying to cut down. The reason for this is actually based on our genetics, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot do something about it. You may even have developed muscles underneath, but as long as the fat is present you will never get a chance to see what it looks like. This means that your priority has to be on cleaning up your nutrition. If you refuse to eat better, no matter what else you do, you will never look better. Early on however, you don’t have to get too specific with your eating. Simply make a pass through your diet and get rid of the obvious garbage that you know is not helping your cause. Sweets, excessive alcohol, sugars, etc can all be removed and replaced with more nutritious foods. You don’t have to necessarily worry about your macros at this point but just getting rid of the junk food and liquid calories. Realizing that it will take some time to see the results of these changes however, you should start chipping away at the trouble spots in another way. For the abdomen, you want to first ensure that you can properly activate the muscles in the rectus and transverse abdominis. Most find this difficult and even when they do perform ab exercises they get frustrated at not being able to feel them. Next, you want to start adding in ab training but mostly in the form of rotational ab exercises. Instead of trying to do crunches and having the fat get in the way of the movement, you can work your abs without having to crunch. Finally, you want to incorporate moves for your entire core, such as with the 7 minute ab workout included above. When it comes to the love handles, you want to start by working the lats. Here especially, you want to focus on full contractions and range of motion to ensure proper development of the muscles that actually insert onto the top of the pelvis near your waistline. The more you can build these muscles the greater the visual differential between your waist and your shoulders and the better the v taper. Next add in direct ab work and finish up with direct oblique training for the best look as your diet gets dialed in. Finally, for the chest you want to stretch it and strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff to posturally improve the visual appearance of your chest. From here, work the serratus anterior. This will give your chest more natural underlying support will helping to visually chisel out the area underneath. Finally, you want to make sure that as your body fat levels decrease and fat loss continues that you are working your chest in all three heads. Use the angles of the band work as an example of how to hit the upper, lower and middle chest. Toby here with another one my series of workouts that are designed to eliminate those unsightly love handles, burn off some of that stubborn belly fat, and tone up your arms, and chest. Now the workouts I’ve designed for this installment will require you to use the equipment found at your local gym. This way, when you get to your gym, you will know exactly what piece of equipment to be on the lookout for and how to use it. As an added bonus, this time I’ve designed three different versions of workouts depending on a certain area of the body to target. Each workout consists of 3 different exercises, so pay close attention as I break them down for you. I’ll show you how to perform each exercise properly to avoid injury, then I’ll go through one complete set for you. Let’s get started: #1 - 1:59 - Close Grip Dumbbell Presses -3 sets x 12 reps, 30 seconds rest in between sets. #2 - 2:58 - Decline Cable Flys - 3 sets x 12 reps, 30 seconds rest in between sets. #3 - 3:38 - Incline Smith Machine Bench Presses: 3 sets x 12 reps, 30 seconds rest in between sets. There you have it, fellas. Remember - focus on breathing and engaging the muscles in the area you want to work on. And, if you aren’t breaking a sweat, increase the reps or the number of sets you’re doing. Now, don’t worry about having more workouts to do, because I’m also going to be doing another workout in my next video specific to another stubborn area of fat. Perform 4-5 sets and rest no more than 75 seconds between sets! Lower Chest Exercise 3/3: Pec Fly chest activator This is an advanced variation of the pec fly and will help you sculpt your chest by adding more time under tension directly on the chest! These are 10 exercises all men should avoid. Not only should you stop doing these exercises but you should never do them again. These are the worst gym workout mistakes if you're trying to avoid an injury. You might feel it in your lower back or your shoulder but you find yourself thinking did I do something wrong or does this exercise just suck. Well it really isn't always you. There are a lot of exercises out there that are plain bad for you & they only continue to exist just because they've been passed down from one misinformed gym to the next, & noones been smart enough to realize that these common exercises are no good. So today we're going over 10 exercises that all men should avoid & these exercises aren't only exclusive to men. Women should avoid these exercises as well it's just that in this video we'll be sticking to exercises that i usually find men doing wrong. The very first one that I want to start with is actually a group of exercises that guys are drawn to like moths to a flame. I'm talking about all the selectorizor ab machines at your local gym. The machines that you usually start by sitting down pulling out the pin, selecting your weight, then grabing some handles behind your head & doing crunches. These machines are not only a waste of time but they are also dangerous for your lower back. All these selectorizor ab machines are locked into a range of motion, meaning that your joints & your disks can't travel down their natural path, you can only travel down the path that the machine has set for you. Even if you adjust the machine to your body perfectly, which by the way is very hard to do, but even if you somehow had a machine customized for your body you can still easily run into lower back issues because you're still locked in a set range of motion throughout the entire exercise. Besides a greater potential for a lower back injury you will also get significantly less results from these machines than if you stuck to regular ab exercises like crunches, hanging knee tucks, & declined situps. The reason is once again due to the fact that your locked into a range of motion. The core's main responsibility is stabilization. And it's important to improve your functional core strength because your core isn't only responsible for stabilizing your trunk but it stabilizes your whole body. It is the bridge that connects your lower body to your upper body. When you're locked in a range of motion you take all of the stabilization normally required for ab exercises out of the movement. The really ironic part is that those abdominal stabilizer muscles that you're not working on these machines are very important to strengthen in order to prevent the lower back injury that you'll likely experience on one of these machines. Due to the fact that you're not working your stabilizers you're missing out on all of those deep tissue abdominal muscles like your transverse abdominus & your only targeting mostly your rectus abdominus which is the very outer layer six pack looking muscle. The transverse abdominus is very important to work because not only does it help prevent injury, but it also pulls your stomach in keeping everything nice & tight giving you that flat stomach look. If you want to make your ab exercises tougher use weights by simply holding a dumbbell or a plate either behind your head or accross your chest while doing regular traditional ab exercises. Once again if you don't know where to start start with exercises like stability ball crunches, declined situps, & hanging knee tucks. The next exercise you should avoid is the behind the head shoulder press. First off there is absolutely no advantage to going behind your head. None. Even though I'm sure some old school guys will be disagreeing with me in the comments below you can research this yourself & you'll find that when you go behind the head you're still targeting the same muscles that you would if you went in front of your head & there's no advantage when going behind your head that will allow you to build your shoulder muscle faster. Instead what will happen when you go behind the head is you'll be putting your shoulders in a very compromised position. To go behind your head you'll have to externally rotate your arms outward putting your rotator cuff in a very unstable & weak position. This will immediately require you to lower the weight that your using for your shoulders. This already creates a huge disadvantage when compared with just going in front of your head with a heavier weight. By lifting a heavier weight in front of your head you'll get more strength improvements & more muscle gains

As you will know, the song is based on the lyrics by R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island, one of the greatest novels ever written. I think this version captures its essence, and because of it I say it's the most realistic and accurate version (for me). Stevenson is one of my favourite writers. Guys hit the bench press, maybe do a few dumbbell incline presses, and then follow up this routine with a few pectoral flys. If you want your chest to make size and strength gains you have to think outside the box and incorporate unique exercises that work different sections of your chest. There is a huge problem with most guy’s chest development – and that is most guys have absolutely zero upper chest development and also lack a chiseled inner section. Carving out that line in the middle of your chest and building a thick upper chest will set your physique apart from the other bros this summer – and is essential for maximum aesthetics. Let’s check out the best chest exercises for men! Here my top 4 "forgotten" chest exercises that grew my pecs. Dumbbell Pullover Superset: I actually learned about the power of this exercise watching a video of Jeff Seid workout with Kai Greene. Kai Greene explained why just doing the incline bench press is not enough to get a chiseled upper chest. You need to hit the upper chest from a different angle and get a squeeze – and this is precisely what the dumbbell pull over accomplishes. Check out the video so you can see the exact form you need to perform with this exercise. It is truly all about the squeeze and contraction. Don’t even worry about how much weight you are lifting during this exercise. Hex Press: The Hex press is a really unique dumbbell chest exercise. Most guys flail their elbows out during traditional dumbbell chest press exercises and only work the outer portion of their pectorals. During the hex press you are going to keep the dumbbells close together and keep your elbows in. What this accomplishes is focusing on that inner portion of your chest – developing a chiseled line down the center of your chest that makes you resemble a Greek god! Eccentric Overload Chest Press: Contrary to popular belief – you actually build more muscle on the “eccentric portion” of the exercise. This is the part of the repetition when you are lowering the weight. The key with this exercise is to go really slow on the way down so you are able to maximize the healthy micro tears that you create. Watch the video to see how I BEAST on 315. Wolverine Low Cable Fly: The "wolverine low cable fly" exercise is my personal favorite for sculpting the inner portion of your chest because you are forced to incorporate an "exaggerated motion” far past the normal low cable fly. Wit the wolverine low cable fly exercise you are actually crossing your hands in the movement – getting an extra stretch on your chest muscles. This is absolutely incredible at carving out your chest and the pump I get from this exercise far outweighs any other cable fly chest exercise.
