Is this the ISIS drone shown in Popular Science Magazine?

03:22
When I saw Popular Science magazine publishing a picture of an alleged ISIS attack drone I could not believe my eyes. I have exactly the same "drone", except mine is probably a whole lot faster because it's powered with a jet engine rather than a propeller. Visit the following links for the PopSci story and more information on the warnings I posted back in 2002. PopSci story "What we know about ISIS's scratch built drones" http://www.popsci.com/isis-drones My original warning from 2002: https://aardvark.co.nz/pjet/cruise.shtml The full video of my jet-powered ISIS Drone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgp3j-odseo Since this video has already been seen over 500,000 times, did it inspire the "scratch-built" ISIS drone depicted in the PopSci story? And here are some more videos explaining the construction of my drone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msUC2M6Svjw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN7DAtqOkmc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhfG_j7a7qc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdNrTEjyvxU

Do You Think Popular Science Magazine Will Survive 2 Years?

09:28
Whether you read Popular Science magazine or not, this is a story you need to study. The publishing industry is STILL under siege. That’s no surprise. But how the different long-time players are reacting and responding to this makes for very interesting reading. Take Popular Science magazine, for example. They’ve made some pretty bug changes recently to improve circulation and ensure their future success. But have they really? The fact is the most recent changes sound a lot like, well, changes made just two years ago. Watch this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business episode #95 and decide for yourself. Will PopSci survive? Will it survive two more years? What do you think?

Startalk Radio - The Science of Illusion with Penn & Teller - Neil deGrasse Tyson talk

51:59
Startalk Radio - The Science of Illusion with Penn & Teller - Neil deGrasse Tyson talk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there something about the human brain that makes us particularly susceptible to magic and illusion? Is skepticism the antidote to pseudoscience? All will be revealed when Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews Penn & Teller, two of the world’s most popular magicians, who also happen to be world famous skeptics. In studio, Neil is joined by co-host Chuck Nice and neuroscientist Dr. Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D., who co-wrote the book on magic and the human mind. You’ll learn how it’s possible to practice honest, moral magic – and also how a magic trick was once used to further the goals of colonialism through racism and misogyny. Find out why Harry Houdini went from believing that you could communicate with the dead to becoming the scourge of phony mediums. Michael Shermer, the Founding Publisher of Skeptic magazine, calls in to discuss what magical thinking is, and why we should be wary of superstition, psychics, astrology, and other flavors of pseudoscience. Plus, Bill Nye explains why we want to believe in magic, and Penn Jillette lets us in on the only secret in magic. Startalk Radio - The Science of Family Guy with Seth MacFarlane - Neil deGrasse Tyson ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What can we learn about time travel or the multiverse from Stewie and Brian on Family Guy? Find out when Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews his friend (and fellow COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey Executive Producer) Seth MacFarlane. You’ll discover what drew Seth to science as a kid in the first place. Neil and Seth reminisce about how they met, and how Neil became the science consultant on the episode where Stewie goes back to the Big Bang. Seth explains how he was able to do three parody episodes of Star Wars, and got the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation to be in an episode. In studio, the two Chucks – co-host Chuck Nice and frequent guest astrophysicist Charles Liu – discuss the cartoon laws of physics, the history and technology of animation, political correctness, scientific literacy and aliens. You’ll also hear the story behind COSMOS for Rednecks, along with Seth’s hilarious Carl Sagan impression. Speaking of animation, Simon Singh, author of The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets, calls in to discuss the pervasive use of advanced mathematics in the longest running American animated program and sitcom of all time. Plus, Bill Nye visits Forbidden Planet, a NYC comic book shop, and dons his very own super hero cape. Sagan's ability to convey his ideas allowed many people to understand the cosmos better—simultaneously emphasizing the value and worthiness of the human race, and the relative insignificance of the Earth in comparison to the Universe. More Carl Sagan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=9af4feeb12deb35a1542815d27b8b212&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=carl%20sagan He delivered the 1977 series of Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in London. He hosted and, with Ann Druyan, co-wrote and co-produced the highly popular thirteen-part Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage modeled on Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man. Cosmos covered a wide range of scientific subjects including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the Universe. The series was first broadcast by the PBS in 1980, winning an Emmy and a Peabody Award. It has been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 500 million people, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history. In addition, Time magazine ran a cover story about Sagan soon after the show broadcast, referring to him as "creator, chief writer and host-narrator of the new public television series Cosmos, [and] takes the controls of his fantasy spaceship". Sagan was a proponent of the search for extraterrestrial life. He urged the scientific community to listen with radio telescopes for signals from potential intelligent extraterrestrial life-forms. Sagan was so persuasive that by 1982 he was able to get a petition advocating SETI published in the journal Science and signed by 70 scientists including seven Nobel Prize winners. This was a tremendous increase in the respectability of this controversial field. Sagan also helped Frank Drake write the Arecibo message, a radio message beamed into space from the Arecibo radio telescope on November 16, 1974, aimed at informing potential extraterrestrials about Earth. Sagan was chief technology officer of the professional planetary research journal Icarus for twelve years. He co-founded The Planetary Society, the largest space-interest group in the world, with over 100,000 members in more than 149 countries, and was a member of the SETI Institute Board of Trustees. Sagan served as Chairman of the Division for Planetary Science of the American Astronomical Society, as President of the Planetology Section of the American Geophysical Union, and as Chairman of the Astronomy Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). At the height of the Cold War, Sagan became involved in public awareness efforts for the effects of nuclear war when a mathematical climate model suggested that a substantial nuclear exchange could upset the delicate balance of life on Earth. He was one of five authors -- the "S" -- of the "TTAPS" report, as the research paper came to be known. He eventually co-authored the scientific paper hypothesizing a global nuclear winter following nuclear war. He also co-authored the book A Path Where No Man Thought: Nuclear Winter and the End of the Arms Race, a comprehensive examination of the phenomenon of nuclear winter. Sagan also wrote books to popularize science, such as Cosmos, which reflected and expanded upon some of the themes of A Personal Voyage and became the best-selling science book ever published in English; The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence, which won a Pulitzer Prize; and Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science. Sagan also wrote the best-selling science fiction novel Contact in 1985, based on a film treatment he wrote with his wife in 1979, but he did not live to see the book's 1997 motion picture adaptation, which starred Jodie Foster and won the 1998 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_sagan

Big Picture Science: Skeptic Check New UFO Evidence - Jan 29, 2018

50:50
Reupload to fix an audio issue. Assessing the possibility of visitation. Hosted by Seth Shostak and Molly Bentley. It was a shocker of a story, splashed across the New York Times front page: The existence of a five-year long, hidden Pentagon investigation of UFOs. With one-third of the American public convinced that aliens are visiting Earth, could this study finally provide the proof? We consider how this story came to light and what the $22 million program has produced. Does the existence of a secret study mean there’s now decent proof of extraterrestrial craft in our skies? We take a look at the evidence made public so far. And why, six years after the study ended, are we learning about it now? Guests: James Oberg http://www.jamesoberg.com/ - Space journalist, historian and former NASA employee James McGaha https://www.centerforinquiry.net/speakers/mcgaha_james - Retired Air Force pilot, astronomer and director of the Grasslands Observatory Ben Radford http://benjaminradford.com/ - Deputy editor of Skeptical Inquirer magazine and a Research Fellow with the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry Descripción en español http://musingsfromthecosmicshore.net/?p=2052 Download audio: http://radio.seti.org/episodes/skeptic-check-new-ufo-evidence Hosted by Seth Shostak and Molly Bentley, The Big Picture Science radio show and podcast engages the public with modern science research through lively and intelligent storytelling. Recipes for making science appetizing: Flora Lichtman at TEDxCooperUnion

09:08
Flora Lichtman is the multimedia editor at National Public Radio's "Science Friday," where she makes videos for the web and chats about them on the radio. She's the co-author of "Annoying: The Science Of What Bugs Us" (Wiley, 2011)--unfortunately a topic of deep personal interest--and writes regularly for Popular Science magazine. Before coming to Science Friday, Flora worked at a NATO oceanographic lab in Italy, where she cruised around the Mediterranean Sea looking for marine mammals. She graduated from Yale University with a degree in Environmental Studies. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
