We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. In our future videos we will see what are system and object privileges and how to grant them to a user. Today for this video we will be using Sample schema HR which already has all the necessary privileges. Ohk Let's see the syntax. CREATE TABLE table name ( column name1 Data-Type(size), column name2 Data-Type(size), ..... ); CREATE TABLE is an oracle reserved word or say an Oracle key word whereas There are 3 different ways of creating a table in Oracle database. Creating a table using Command Line Interface (CLI) in Oracle database For demonstrating how to create table in oracle database using CLI, I'll be using Command prompt. Thats how we create table using command prompt. you can check your table structure by DESCRIBE command for that just write DESC and your table name. Like this Another way of creating a table is by using Graphic user interface (GUI) in Oracle database To demonstrate how to create table using GUI we will use SQL developer. Lets open our SQL developer I am connected to HR schema if you do not know how to create a connection to database using SQL developer please watch my oracle database tutorial 4 that explains database connectivity using SQL developer and command prompt. Link for this video is in the description below. So lets create a table. Creating a table using SQL developer is very easy we do not have to fire any query here. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. This will open a separate schema browser pane or you can expend your connection by clicking this + sign and then right click on table and choose New Table. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Also choose a datatype from the list and specify any size you can check this not null column if in case you want to make this a mandatory column you can also specify default value and constraint If you want to make this column a primary key you can click here In my future video i'll show you what are these constraints and different ways of applying them on a column in a table. for this video we will concentrate on create table only so when you are done with all your columns click ok Thats your table You can double click on your table here and can see its structure. Thats it

Oracle SQL Tutorial 26 - UTF-8 and UTF-16
UTF-8 and UTF-16 are different encodings for the Unicode character set. Let's discuss UTF-8 first. UTF-8 is what is known as a variable-length character set. This means that the amount of storage a character takes up depends on what character it is. For example, if we store the character A, it will only take up one byte. In fact, ASCII is a subset of UTF-8. That means UTF-8 encoding can work with ASCII data. If you are new to computer storage, a byte is a very small amount of information. The smallest thing a computer can store is a bit. 1 or 0. On or off. There are 8 bits in a byte, 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte, 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte, and 1024 gigabytes in a terabyte, and 1024 terabytes in a petabyte. Considering it is completely possible for a database to be multiple petabytes, you can understand that a byte is very small. If you store a non-English character, the size of UTF-8 will increase to 2, 3, or 4 bytes. If you think back to when we used the VARCHAR data type, we passed in 50 CHAR. The reason we throw in that CHAR is that the default for Oracle is 50 characters. Now you can understand why adding the CHAR might be important. If a character can take up multiple bytes, you cannot guarantee 50 characters. Now, on to UTF-16. UTF-16 is also a variable length encoding, but it differs in that It is either 2 or 4 bytes. That means to store an A, it now takes two bytes rather than one. Even though a byte is so small, when you are storing billions of characters, an unnecessary byte really adds up to a lot of wasted storage. We can only represent so many characters with 2 bytes. When we run out of options, we move to four bytes to allow for other characters. Which do we use? It often depends on what platform you are on and also what languages you are working with. For example, if you are working with Asian language, UTF-16 stores each character in 2 bytes while UTF-8 stores each character in 3 bytes. So you could save space by using UTF-16. Additionally, UTF-16 works better when you are writing code in Java or something from Microsoft .NET because UTF-16, or a subset of it called UCS-2, is widely adopted. Other than that, UTF-8 will be the one you want. Now that we have built a pretty good foundation of character sets, we can now continue our discussion of data types. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

From Data to Knowledge - 304 - Alekh Agarwal
Slides: http://lyra.berkeley.edu/CDIConf/pdfs/AgarwalBerkeleyStreamingTalk.pdf Alekh Agarwal: "Oracle inequalities for large scale model selection". A video from the UC Berkeley Conference: From Data to Knowledge: Machine-Learning with Real-time and Streaming Applications (May 7-11, 2012). Abstract Alekh Agarwal (UC Berkeley, EECS) In many large-scale, high-dimensional prediction problems, performance is limited by computational resources rather than sample size. In this setting, we consider the problem of model selection under computational constraints: given a particular computational budget, is it better to gather more data and estimate a simpler model, or gather less data and estimate a more complex model? We introduce general procedures for model selection under computational constraints. In contrast to classical oracle inequalities, which show that a model selection scheme gives a near-optimal trade-off between approximation error and estimation error for a given sample size, we give computational oracle inequalities, which show that our methods give a near-optimal trade-off for a given amount of computation, that is, devoting all of our computational budget to the best model would not have led to a significant performance improvement. Joint work with Peter Bartlett, John Duchi and Clement Levrard.

Model Selection and Recent Results for Large Scale Problems, Peter Bartlett
The talk will first review model selection methods, which aim to automatically determine a model complexity for a prediction problem that best trades off approximation and estimation properties. The talk will focus on complexity pe-nalization methods, which minimize the sum of an empirical risk term and a complexity penalty. It will review oracle inequalities, that is, results that show that the accuracy of a prediction rule produced by a model selection method is almost as good as the best bound that would have been achieved by any model complexity. The simplest results of this form are for complexity penalties based on bounds on the maximal deviation between empirical and true risks. There are many situations, however, where such complex-ity penalties give loose upper bounds on the risk, including regression with strongly convex loss functions, and pattern classification where the probability distribution satisfies a low noise condition. The talk will review model selection methods with smaller complexity penalties that satisfy ora-cle inequalities with faster rates in these situations. The second part of the talk will cover recent results on large-scale model selection problems. In these problems, perfor-mance is limited by computational resources rather than sample size, and the classical oracle inequalities, which show a near-optimal trade-off between approximation error and estimation error for a given sample size, are no longer rel-evant. We formulate the problem of model selection under computational constraints: is it better to spend our compu-tation gathering more data and estimating a simpler model, or gathering less data and estimating a more complex model? We present methods that satisfy computational oracle in-equalities, that is, devoting all of our computational budget to the best model would not have led to a significant perfor-mance improvement. We also show that our methods and results extend to those cases where faster rates are possible.

Simplified DBA-014- Database Architecture Physical and Logical Explained
A database storage structure could be divided into logical and physical structure. Physical structure consists of files on physical disks while logical structure resides in the database. Both can be managed separately. Each database is logically divided into two or more tablespaces. One or more data files are explicitly created for each tablespace to physically store the data. A database is divided into logical storage units called tablespaces, which group related logical structures or datafiles together. For example, tablespaces commonly group all of an application’s segments to simplify some administrative operations. At the finest level of granularity, an Oracle database’s data is stored in data blocks. One data block corresponds to a specific number of bytes of physical space on the disk. A data block size is specified for each tablespace when it is created. A database uses and allocates free database space in Oracle data blocks. When you create a table, a segment is created with the same name in the tablespace. This segment has one or more Extents of equal size. Each Extent has Oracle Data Blocks as per tablespace definition. A data block could be of size 8K, 16K, 32K, 64K etc.
