Travel Korea: Gangneung! Korea's beautiful east sea

14:18
Hello :D!!!! Happy August! It is crazy hot and humid right now in Korea x.x. Me and Jay decided to take a trip to Gangneung in Gangwondo! Gangwondo is the east part of Korea that is famous for beautiful mountains and the east sea! I was craving the ocean since we are now in the middle of the hottest season. Most people travel to Seokcho but I really wanted to check out Gangneung. Gangneung is famous for coffee :). They have a large coffee street that overlooks the ocean, as well as a nice hotel (the Sea Marq) that has an unreal view. You can also experience water sports like parasailing, tube riding and more. The first night we stayed at a Korean spa that had natural hot spring water and the next day we spent by the ocean. We briefly went into town to check out the beer brewery. In total we spent around $300 on this trip including two bus tickets, lotsss of food, tube riding, taxi rides, accommodation, and some fancy pants coffee (Sea Marq). The trip could have been much cheaper but we decided to not hold back too much once we were there! Usually you can find really cheap pensions by the sea, but August and the end of July are peak travel seasons in Korea, so all the prices get inflated D:! I recommend to try and aim your vacation in June or September to get the cheapest prices while still having some warm weather. Thanks for watching ^^

N. Korea fires ballistic missile into East Sea: S. Korean military

01:22
합참 "北, 동해로 탄도미사일 1발 발사" North Korea has fired another ballistic missile into the East Sea just hours ago. This latest launch comes just two weeks after the regime lobbed three missiles -- two Nodong-class and one Scud - last month. Let's go over to the Defense Ministry where our Kim Hyun-bin is standing by. Hyun-bin, North Korea's missile protest is almost becoming a routine now. What have you learned so far? Good morning, Da-eun South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced within the last hour or so that North Korea has fired one ballistic missile from Hwanghaenam-do province in its western region into the sea off the North's east coast. The launch time was 7:50 a.m., South Korea time,... so just over two hours ago. No news yet on what type of missile this was or whether the launch can be deemed a success or failure. We will also have to wait and see whether the North test-fires more missiles today as the regime has a track record of firing a series of missiles in a day when it does. This latest launch is being seen as an armed protest against the upcoming deployment to South Korea of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD. Many experts believe North Korea will continue to launch ballistic missiles this month as a large-scale South Korea-U.S. war game called "Ulchi Freedom Guardian" is scheduled for mid-August. Since Kim Jong-un took power in late 2011,... North Korea has launched over 32 ballistic missiles, including submarine-launched and mid-range Musudan missiles. I'll have more updates as we get them. N. Korea shows signs of missile launch to East Sea

01:22
"北, 무수단 미사일 동해안 전개"…軍 "예의주시" North Korea appears to be prepping yet another missile launch off its east coast. The South Korean military on Tuesday confirmed a missile has been loaded and it's on the move, though there are no signs of an immediate launch. Kim Hyun-bin reports South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on Tuesday that they have spotted signs of missile launch preparations from North Korea. The South Korean military says the missile is loaded onto a mobile launch pad. It said it is keeping a close eye on the missile's movements. Tokyo has reportedly ordered its self-defense forces to intercept the missile... if it falls into Japanese territory. Kyodo News Agency reported Japan deployed Aegis destroyers to the East Sea and has PAC-3 missiles on standby to intercept the missile in the event of a launch. The missile is believed to be a mid-range Musudan, which has a range of up to four-thousand kilometers, putting the U.S. territory of Guam within reach. North Korea first deployed the missile in 2007, but hadn't tested it until this year. It has fired off four of them starting in mid-April, but all of the launches ended in failure. The tests were conducted off the eastern coastal city of Wonsan in the North's Gangwon-do province. Many experts believe North Korea will continue to test the Musudan until the launch is successful. S.Korea returns 3 N.Korean fishermen rescued in East Sea / YTN

00:33
South Korea has returned three North Korean fishermen who were rescued in the East Sea across the inter-Korean border this week. The South Korean Unification Ministry said it handed the three North Koreans who were found by the Coast Guard while drifting on a boat in the East Sea to the North through the truce village of Panmunjeom. They all had wished to return home, according to the ministry. The ministry added that their boat was drifting due to engine failure after leaving the North's eastern port city of Wonsan.

South Korea, U.S. fire missiles into East Sea in response to North Korea's ICBM test

01:47
한미, 北도발 대응 탄도미사일 훈련…300㎞ 현무-2A 발사 Seoul and Washington sent its message to North Korea loud and clear with a combined drill. In less than 24 hours since the provocation, they displayed the ability to directly strike the regime's leadership using ballistic missiles. Kim Hyun-bin zooms in on the allies' response. South Korea and the U.S. jointly staged a massive ballistic missile exercise Wednesday morning. It was aimed at sending a strong warning to Pyongyang that the allies are ready and willing to destroy key facilities in the North with the push of a button. The large-scale drill comes less than 24 hours after North Korea test-fired an ICBM. South Korea fired a ballistic missile of a type called Hyunmoo-2, and the U.S. fired a tactical surface-to-surface missile... into South Korea's territorial waters in the East Sea. In a statement released Wednesday by the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae,... the drills were conducted on the order of President Moon Jae-in,... who stressed the need to demonstrate the allies' position with action... not just words. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the move... with high praise for President Moon's reaction to the North's provocation. The South Korean military also made public footage of state-of-the-art missiles that could be used to take out the North's leadership. The Joint Chiefs of Staff on Wednesday released a one-minute video showing a fighter jet firing a Taurus long-range precision-guided missile. The missile has a range of 500 kilometers, so it can target Pyongyang from the border,... and it's specially designed to strike bunkers and key facilities. South Korea reportedly purchased 170 of the missiles from Germany and 80 have been deployed so far. JCS also revealed video clips of other precision guided missiles and the recent flight of a U.S. B-1B strategic bomber over the peninsula, putting Pyongyang on notice that Seoul and Washington are ready to respond at all times. East Sea name bill: South Korea wins battle against Japan for US textbooks

01:36
The Virginia state legislature handed South Korea a minor victory earlier this month after it passed a bill requiring school textbooks to designate the Sea of Japan also as the East Sea and state lawmakers in New York have now joined in the East Sea naming efforts. The house of delegates approved the proposed legislation with a vote of 81-15. In addition to victories in Virginia and New York, New Jersey lawmakers have introduced a bill obliging the state government to use only the East Sea, when referring to the body of water. Korean-Americans remain a dominant political force in Virginia where legislators have received considerable financial support from the Korean community. The state senator who who submitted the bill in New York, explained that "Sea of Japan" is the a term that Koreans associate with the legacy of Japanese colonialism. According to 2010 U.S. census data, 1.7 million Korean Americans live in the U.S., while the number of Japanese Americans stands at 1.3 million. Several counties in Maryland, which neighbors Virginia, have already adopted both names when teaching students, despite objections from the Japanese government. The Korean community in the US appears determined to push the East Sea bill mandating that each state use the term East Sea in children's textbooks. A spokeswoman for the State Department, however, said on January 22 that there is to no change in U.S. government policy. The U.S. federal government formally only recognizes the Sea of Japan as the name of the body of water. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. North Korea fires two short-range missiles into East Sea

00:51
Let's start with Pyongyang's latest provocation... North Korea fired two more short-range missiles off its eastern coast on this Monday morning... just a matter of days after it fired four short-range missiles from the same location. South Korea's Defense Ministry said the North launched two Scud missiles into the East Sea at around 6:20 a.m, Korea time... and that the missiles flew at least 500 kilometers. The missile launch comes amid Seoul and Washington's annual joint military exercises that Pyongyang opposes. A South Korean official said this latest string of missile launches may be North Korea's attempt to ratchet up military tensions against the joint military drills, and that Seoul is keeping a close eye in case of any additional provocations.

N. Korea fires two short-range missiles into East Sea

01:41
북, 동해상으로 단거리 탄도미사일 2발 발사 North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the East Sea earlier today. Experts see the firings as an armed protest against the annual joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States that kicked off on Monday. For more, we connect with our Kim Hyun-bin standing by the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul. Hyun-bin, what you hearing? Mark, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the two missiles were fired at around 5:20 a.m. from North Hwanghae province, which borders South Korea. The missiles flew around 500 kilometers before falling into the East Sea and are presumed to be a type of Scud missile. The South Korean military says that it is looking into the situation and is prepared to deal with any future provocations. Under UN resolutions, North Korea is banned from testing ballistic missiles. Now,... this comes just a few days after Pyongyang fired several rockets into the East Sea from its 300-millimeter multiple-rocket launcher. The communist regime has been ratcheting up its provocations against the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle drills, which started Monday and are the largest in scale to date. On Wednesday, the North threatened to demolish the allies' military installations,... calling the drills an exercise to take out its leadership. The North has a history of launching provocations during the annual springtime drills, which Seoul and Washington maintain are purely defensive in nature. Some experts say the regime's provocations represent an armed protest against a set of recently adopted UN Security Council sanctions that were imposed to punish the North for its fourth nuclear test and long distance rocket launch earlier this year. That's all I have for now. I will have more updates later in the day. British website changes ‘Sea of Japan’ into 'East Sea' after Korean student’s request

02:22
'일본해'를 '동해'로 바로 잡은 한국 여고생 The name for the body of water between Korea and Japan has long been a point of contention between Seoul and Tokyo, though the two names -- and the significance of them -- aren't widely known outside of Asia. But one persistent high school student in Busan has marked down a victory in trying to change that. Kim Hyesung reports. Sixteen-year-old Choi Hyun-jung is just like other high school students in Korea, but she has a special interest in Korean history and international relations. That passion prompted her into action last month, after she saw a British website with a map that used the name Sea of Japan instead of East Sea. "Marking Sea of Japan is destructing legacy of the Japanese imperialism. And I also mentioned that International organizations like UN and IHO already agreed on using both East Sea and Sea of Japan. Foreign websties like World Atlas and Amazon already are using both of them. So I request the head of the website to change the error on the map." After multiple emails, the website's head editor sent her an apology and changed the map on March 23rd. Lying between Korea and Japan and extending north toward Russia, the East Sea is more than just a body of water... and the name is one Koreans have used for over two thousand years. - "Using the name East Sea is very important for Korea's sovereignty. Sea of Japan is a term used by the Japanese after 1929, a legacy of Japanese colonial rule, but there's a limit to what the Korean government can do to fix it due to its sensitivity, so having civilians ask map publishers or websites to change it is a very positive move." "A positive move that is also powerful. And it shows once again... that with persistence and passion, a person can always make an impact. Choi says the experience has given her the courage to study more about Korean history and she will continue to work as a civilian ambassador for her country. Kim Hyesung, Arirang News, Busan." North Korea fires several cruise missiles into East Sea: South Korean military

01:57
It's an all to regular occurrence these days... North Korea has fired more missiles into the East Sea. South Korea's military is currently analyzing the launches,... but for more details we connect live with our Kim Hyun-bin who is standing by at Seoul's defense ministry. Hyunbin,... what are you hearing? Good Morning, Mark As you mentioned,... North Korea fired several missiles from its east coast this morning. They flew some 200 kilometers before coming down in the East Sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says North Korea fired surface-to-ship cruise missiles... at an unspecified time... from a base near the city of Wonsan in Gangwon-do Province. The JCS added that the South Korean military has beefed up surveillance and readiness for possible additional provocations. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff directly contacted President Moon Jae-in after the launch was detected. This marks the fifth round of missile firings from the North since the new liberal administration took office in early May. It comes even as President Moon pushes for improving inter-Korean relations. That's all I have for now. I will bring more updates in the later newscasts.

South Korea, U.S. fire missiles into East Sea in response to North Korea's ICBM test

02:03
한미, 北도발 대응 탄도미사일 훈련…300㎞ 현무-2A 발사 In a rapid show of force against North Korea for Tuesday's -- now confirmed -- ICBM test, the South Korean and U.S. militaries have conducted an offensive ballistic missile drill aimed at striking the North's leadership. For more,... we connect live to our Kim Hyun-bin at the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul. Hyun-bin... the allies wasted little time to send a strong signal to Kim Jong-un... That's right, Mark South Korea and the U.S. staged a massive combined ballistic missile exercise this morning. It was aimed at sending a strong warning to Pyongyang that the allies are ready and willing to destroy key facilities in the North with a push of a button. The large scale drill comes less than 24 hours after North Korea test-fired its ICBM. South Korea fired a ballistic missile known as Hyunmoo-2 and the U.S. fired a tactical surface-to-surface missile,... into South Korea's territorial waters in the East Sea. In a statement released by the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae earlier today,... the drills were conducted on the order of President Moon Jae-in,... who stressed the need to demonstrate the allies' defense posture with action... not just a statement. U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the move,... saying he highly praised President Moon's reaction to the North's provocation. Good to see the allies in lockstep on the need for a strong initial response. In regards to North Korea,... the regime is now claiming they have the firepower to target the U.S. mainland... That's correct. North Korea's state run Korean Central News Agency reported early Wednesday that Pyongyang had mastered the atmospheric re-entry technology for its ICBM. Experts say the re-entry technology is the most important and difficult process when developing an ICBM. It also claimed the ICBM is capable of carrying a large size nuclear warhead,... but that is not confirmed by any independent experts. In response,... the South Korean military warned the North that the allies are ready to retaliate in case of a North Korean missile attack... and that its leadership will be wiped off the face of the earth if they threaten the security of the allies. N. Korea fires four ballistic missiles into East Sea: S. Korean military

01:54
We start with what we know so far about the four missiles North Korea fired this morning... The missiles flew about one thousand kilometers before coming down into the East Sea… and the South Korean military says they're unlikely to be an intercontinental ballistic missile, the type of missile Seoul and Washington are most concerned about. Kim Hyun-bin is at the defense ministry for us. The South Korean military says North Korea fired off four ballistic missiles this morning. "North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the East Sea from its Tongchang-ri missile site at 7:36 a.m. on Monday. The missiles flew around one-thousand kilometers at an altitude of 260 kilometers. Seoul and Washington are currently analyzing the launch." 07 36 4 . 1,000㎞, 260㎞ , A defense ministry official said the missiles were likely Pukguksong-2 missiles, which are an upgraded version of the intermediate-range Musudan ballistic missile. Japan has announced that three of the four missiles fell in its exclusive economic zone,... one within 250 kilometers of Japanese land. North Korea on Friday threatened to launch more missiles in response to the annual Key Resolve and Foal Eagle drills between Seoul and Washington. The large-scale field training drills called Foal Eagle started last week... and the command post exercise Key Resolve will start next week. It's common for North Korea to fire missiles during the drills, which are set to continue through April, and experts expect the North to launch several more missiles through then. The South Korean military says it's on high alert and maintaining readiness for additional provocations. North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile on February 12th in its first provocation of 2017. " If this latest launch is confirmed, it will be North Korea's second ballistic missile launch this year and the second since President Trump took office. Kim Hyun-bin Arirang News." North Korea fires several cruise missiles into East Sea: South Korean military

北, 원산서 지대함 순항미사일 수발 동해로 발사 It's becoming a weekly routine. North Korea fired more missiles into the East Sea. Most unfortunate choice of action, as President Moon Jae-in has been going all out to reach out to Pyongyang. South Korea's military is currently analyzing the launches. Kim Hyun-bin starts us off from the ministry of national defense. North Korea fired several missiles from its east coast Thursday morning which flew some 200 kilometers before coming down in the East Sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says these were surface-to-ship cruise missiles... launched from a base near the city of Wonsan in Gangwon-do Province. "This launch is seen as an armed protest by the regime to show off the accuracy of its anti-ship missiles to warn the U.S. carrier strike group in the region. Also, the regime could be trying to gain leverage against the U.S. and South Korea." The JCS added that the South Korean military has beefed up surveillance and readiness for possible additional provocations. It is suspected that the missile launched this morning was of a type first revealed during a parade for the regime's late founder Kim Il-Sung's 105th birthday in mid-April. After the launch was detected, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff directly contacted President Moon Jae-in. This marks the fifth round of missile firings from the North since the new liberal administration took office in early May, and comes even as President Moon pushes to improve inter-Korean relations. Just last week the regime fired a enhanced scud-type ballistic missile which can apparently target both ships and ground targets. ed: devin ""Our new government is showing interest in inter-Korean talks, but North Korea keeps firing missiles because they believe their WMDs can overcome our defenses. So we need to first enhance our counter-abilities such as the KAMD, and our SLBMs... and then try to establish dialogue." Washington has also expressed concerns about the North's missile capability, especially its intercontinental ballistic missiles, which the regime claims can reach the west coast of the United States. "So far, all of the missiles newly revealed in April's military parade have been test fired except for the ICBM, which experts say could be fired in the near future." Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News.

With North Korea reported to have set a ″no-sail, no-fly zone″ in the East Sea,... concerns are growing the regime could stage a military provocation. Citing a South Korean government official,... local media say ships and aircraft in the North have been notified not to fly or sail in the East Sea. The order was issued last Wednesday. Watchers are reading this as a sign... that the regime is trying to protect its own vessels and planes... as it plans to test fire a mid-range Nodong-class... ballistic missile in the near future. They believe a missile test could take place around the time of U.S. defense chief... Ashton Carter′s visit to South Korea this week... or the birthday of its founding father Kim Il-sung next week.

North Korea deploys missile to East Sea

北, 무수단 미사일 동해안 전개"…軍 "예의주시" North Korea appears to be showing signs of missile launch preparations... yet again. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed this afternoon... a missile has been deployed to the East Sea but there are no signs of an immediate launch. The South Korean military says it is keeping a close eye on the missile's movements. Tokyo has reportedly ordered its self-defense forces to intercept the missile... if it falls in Japanese territory. Kyodo News Agency reports Japan has deployed Aegis destroyers to the East Sea and has PAC-3 missiles on standby to intercept the missile in the event of a launch. The missile is believed to be a mid-range Musudan, which has a range of up to four-thousand kilometers, putting the U.S. territory of Guam within reach. North Korea has tested four Musudan missiles this year and all have ended in failure. N.Korea again fires short-range missiles into East Sea / YTN

01:20
North Korea fired five short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea yesterday (Monday), in an apparent show of force to respond to the ongoing South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises. Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said all of the missiles were launched from North Korea's northeastern city of Hamhung and flew approximately 200 km (125 miles) before landing in the water off the country's east coast. The firings came only three days after the North test-fired two medium-range Rodong ballistic missiles into the same sea on Friday. The Pentagon has confirmed the North Korean firings and condemned the Pyongyang regime for violating multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions. Pentagon spokesman Bill Urban said the U.S. calls on "North Korea to refrain from actions that further raise tensions in the region and to focus instead on taking concrete steps toward fulfilling its international commitments and obligations." China also rebuked the North for the provocative action and reminded its ally not to violate the United Nations resolutions Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing that China is "very concerned about the situation on the Korean Peninsula."

North Korea has launched scores of projectiles using multiple rocket launchers into the East Sea. A South Korean military official said Monday North Korea fired off around 120 artillery shells from multiple rocket launchers in Goseong-gun near the military demarcation line. The official said that none of the projectiles landed in South Korean territory, but added that it is unprecedented for the North to fire rounds so close to the MDL. The device used is presumed to be a 122-millimeter multiple rocket launcher,.... which has a range of up to 20 kilometers. The South Korean military remains on high alert for additional provocations.

North Korea fires two short range missiles into East Sea

북한 단거리 탄도 미사일 2발 발사 Earlier this morning, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea... in the wake of a UN Security Council resolution as well as South Korea's separate set of sanctions against North Korea. Experts see the firings as an armed protest against the ongoing annual joint military drills between South Korea and the United States.. Our national defense correspondent Kim Hyun-bin has more on Pyongyang's most recent armed provocation. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the two missiles were fired at around 5:20 a.m. from North Hwanghae province, which borders South Korea. The missiles flew around 500 kilometers before falling into the East Sea and are presumed to be a type of Scud missile. The South Korean military says that it is looking into the situation and is prepared to deal with any future provocations. "The missiles look to be Scuds. Our PAC-3 missiles are currently in operation, but if THAAD were deployed it would compliment our missile defense system." The defense ministry spokesperson was making a pitch for the advanced U.S. ballistic missile system called THAAD that's under discussion between the two allies. North Korea, which is banned from testing ballistic missiles under UN resolutions,... has been ratcheting up its provocations against an annual round of military exercises called Key Resolve and Foal Eagle. The drills started Monday and are the largest in scale to date. "North Korea fired several rockets from its 300-millimeter multiple-rocket launchers earlier this month and fired short-range missiles on Thursday in what's being seen as an armed protest against the recent UN sanctions and the South Korea-U.S. military drills" The North has a history of launching provocations during the annual springtime drills, which Seoul and Washington maintain are purely defensive in nature. "Experts say Seoul should be prepared for additional provocations from North Korea during the drills, including more short-range missile launches and cyberattacks. Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News."
