Sochi is a Russian resort city, situated in Krasnodar Krai just north of the southern Russian border. It sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea and against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. At 145 km (90 mi), Greater Sochi claims to be the longest city in Europe.[3] As of the 2002 Census, it had a population of 328,809,[1] down from 336,514 recorded in the 1989 Census. In 2006, the population was estimated to be 395,012.[4] The city has been selected to be the host of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.[5] Layout and landmarks Sochi is almost unique among larger Russian cities as having some aspects of a subtropical resort. Apart from the scenic Caucasus Mountains, pebbly and sand beaches, the city attracts vacation-goers with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant Stalinist architecture. About two million people visit Greater Sochi each summer,[13] when the city is home to the annual film festival "Kinotavr" and a getaway for Russia's elite. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 2,957 square kilometres (731,000 acres) Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, lies just north from the city.[14] Sochi also has Europe's most northerly tea plantations. It is served by the Adler-Sochi International Airport. The Sochi Light Metro is under construction, projected to be complete by 2014.

Black Sea resort of Sochi readies to host FIFA World Cup matches
(4 Jun 2018) The Black Sea resort of Sochi rose to global prominence after being awarded the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Situated along 140 kilometres (87 miles) of coast and against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains, the 'Russian Riviera' as it is known, will be back in the headlines this summer as one of the 11 FIFA World Cup host cities. Sochi's Fisht Stadium was built as an enclosed facility for the Winter Games, with its unique sloping look designed to resemble snowy peaks. The 48,000-seater venue later re-opened as an open-air football stadium for the 2017 Confederations Cup. The stadium will be back in service in June to host four World Cup group games: Portugal v Spain, Belgium v Panama, Germany v Sweden and Australia v Peru. The stadium will then host one match from the Round of 16 on 30 June and a quarter-final on 7 July. Russia has spent more than 10-billion US dollars on stadiums and infrastructure for the World Cup, which will be played in Eastern Europe for the first time. Black Sea resort of Sochi struggles to put its Olympic heritage to use
(5 Jun 2018) The Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi rose to global prominence in 2014 when it hosted the Winter Olympics. Now the city is preparing to be the centre of world attention when it hosts some of this summer's football World Cup matches. The Fisht Olympic Stadium is one of the best venues that has been built for the world football showcase, yet so far it has hosted just seven football games to date, four of them at last summer's Confederations Cup. Sochi no longer has a professional club, with the Zhemchuzhina youth team all that remains from the previous vibrant football scene. The professional club Zhemchuzhina was founded in 1991 and then played in the Russian Premier league until 1999. Due to financial problems the club, which changed its name over the years, eventually folded in 2012. The following year FC Sochi was founded in its place. FC Sochi played one game last year in front of 6,000 fans in the 47,000-seat arena, then soon after it also disappeared. In total since 2003, there have been five failed attempts to run a club in the city, not counting the most recent incarnation of FC Sochi, with all collapsing due to financial problems. There have been rumours that a team from Saint-Petersburg will be transferred to Sochi to be based at the Fisht stadium, but nothing concrete has happened so far. Sports commentator Petr Shadrin believes the Russian authorities are struggling to put the Sochi Olympic legacy to good use. He thinks it would have been a far more logical decision to base the stadium at Krasnodar, which is the main city in the region. Although the professional football scene is in disarray in Sochi, on an amateur level the game still plays a dominant part in many people's lives. According to Sochi Street Football League club administrator and arbiter Andrey Chernobrivko, there are already 80 registered street football teams.   Meanwhile tourists flock for selfies in front of plaques in the Olympic Park bearing the names of 2014 medalists, including some who lost their medals for doping. Many of the visitors see the World Cup as a way to restore Russia's image. Sochi's Olympic Hangover: Russia's Black Sea resort scarred by abandoned infrastructure projects
It was the most expensive Olympics ever - but over a year later Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi is scarred by abandoned and vandalised infrastructure projects. Scores of hastily built apartment blocks used to house athletes, dignatories and tourists face an uncertain future as they literally fall apart. "It is abandoned and no one lives here, so youth get there, break things, when I look at this - I feel sorry. I look at it and think "Why don't people live here, there or over there? They are not here, why?," Sochi resident Sarkis Kundakhchyan told Reuters. Check out our website: http://uatoday.tv Facebook: https://facebook.com/uatodaytv Twitter: https://twitter.com/uatodaytv

Sochi prepares for an influx of football fans
(13 Jun 2018) LEADIN: The Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi is gearing up for the World Cup in style. Sochi rose to global prominence in 2014 when it held the Winter Olympics and it's now a popular tourist destination wiht its glitzy bars and high end restaurants. STORYLINE: Visiting Sochi is a mouthwatering prospect for World Cup fans, with beaches, blue skies and arguably the best game in the group stage. Portugal and Spain meet on June 15 in Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics and is a top Russian tourist destination. The legacy of the estimated US$50 billion spent on those Sochi Games is a variety of tourist options. Fans will be able to relax in the beach bars of Adler, a town near the stadium, or hike in the mountains above the city. Ahead of the World Cup, the Sochi Dolphinarium has prepared a football show in which the dolphins play football with a sea lion. The sea lion acts as a goal keeper and kicks away the ball which the dolphins throw at it. "Sometimes it seems that they play better than some of the human football players," says dolphin trainer Svyatoslav Gundarenko. The Sochi dolphinarium, situated in downtown Sochi, is the biggest in Eastern Europe. It opened in 2012 in one of the Sochi's oldest amusement parks "Rivyera".   There are 7 bottlenose dolphins, native to the Black Sea, two white whales and sea lions. According to Gundarenko, the dolphins here were born in captivity as Russia banned the dolphin hunt in 2003. With its sub-tropical climate, Sochi has hot humid summers and mild often snowless winters and is widely known as a beach destination. Numerous cafes and restaurants line the beach promenades. Royal Fish is an Italian and Mediterranean cuisine restaurant where chef Davido Corso uses fresh local products to create high quality dishes. The restaurant has a terrace overlooking the sea.    Local tourist firms offer Sochi visitors guided tours to the Olympic village, ski-resort Rosa Khutor as well as hikes to Sochi's picturesque mountains, caves and waterfalls. Sochi is also home to UNESCO heritage colchic forests that survived the ice age. In 2016-2017, 6.5 million people visited Sochi making it the top tourist destination in Russia, ahead of traditional leader St. Petersburg. On average, Sochi accommodates four to five million people a year.     Rosa Khutor, Sochi's Olympic heritage ski-resort, is one of the most popular destinations. Imitating European ski-resorts, it has numerous restaurants and cantinas. Che Kharcho is a restaurant serving local Caucasian cuisine which is well known and very popular all around Russia. It includes traditional dishes from neighboring Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia's North Caucasus republics and is heavily based on Middle Eastern cuisine. "Che Kharcho is a home food restaurant, we offer to our guests home food, we cook food the way it's cooked at home, so we based our menu on the most simple products," says restaurant chef, Yevgeny Kochetkov. With 600,000 people, Sochi is a vibrant city with charged nightlife. Cocos' bar tender Anton Belash says his venue was the first cocktail bar in the city. They take traditional recipes and rethink them with local spirits such as Georgian vodka and local fruits and herbs such as feijoa and tarragon. GQ Russia included Cocos in its top 10 bars in Russia list in 2017. Sochi will host six matches during the World Cup, starting with Spain and Portugal on June 15 in Group B. The 2018 FIFA World Cup takes place 14 June - 15 July. Sochi 1961, Resort for the People
In 1961, I traveled with my father, Harvey Richards, and step mother, Alice, to the Soviet Union to help them make a film about the USSR to encourage better understanding and friendship between the United States and the USSR. One of our stops was in Sochi, Resort for the People, on the Black Sea, where Harvey filmed and photographed the town and the people. A photo gallery and two films are available on the Harvey Richards Media Archive about Sochi and our other stops during that summer. This video is a compilation of some of the still photos accompanied by the song "Near Black Sea" downloaded from sovmusic.ru web site. Together they offer a relaxing tour of a marvelous moment of time when working people could visit a resort for the people. With the anti-Soviet propaganda machine dusted off and turned into the anti-Russia machine for the winter Olympics, this little video might be a welcome antidote for the poisoned atmosphere created by the mainstream media, which my father would have appreciated.

Around The World goes to Sochi, Russia
Sochi, known as the Russian Riviera, is the popular black sea resort where the 2014 Olympics will be held. There will be two clusters for the games one on the coast and and one in the mountains. Sochi will also be the host for the 2014 Formula One Grand Prix. It is about 1000 miles south of Moscow and serviced by Siberian Airways. This domestic Russian airline flies between Moscow and Sochi Adler airport, and travel time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. On both trips the ground staff collecting boarding passes said, as I entered the jetway, "Good Luck". Fortunately the flight was lucky and landed safely in this sub tropical city which shares a similar latitude with the French Cote d'Azur. With palm trees and waters warm enough to swim in through October, Sochi is at first glance not somewhere one would associate with winter Olympic competitions. From the airport to central Sochi can take 45 minutes depending on traffic. The Chebotarev Hotel is a four-star property and has 70 rooms, many with views of the city and the Black Sea. Furnishings are classically Russian with some wall tapestries and generous space for sofa and chairs. Interesting features includes motion sensors that turns lights on and off as one walks through the hallways. Depending on how fast or slow one strolls --- it can leave you in the dark. A light buffet breakfast is served in the hotel's restaurant, "Alexander". Along the boardwalk is the leading seafood restaurant, Blue Sea. It is tastefully decorated with a modern, comfortable environment, excellent service and good food. Fresh fish and crab with asparagus, beef, black sea flat fish, and pasta with crab are just some of the dishes. The Sochi boardwalk extends for several kilometers along the beach and is peppered with many cafes, restaurants and shops. Musicians perform along the beachfront and small shops have interesting attractions from feel cleaning Thai fish to fruit drinks and shooting galleries. For the serious shopper, Sochi has several large shopping malls. The Olymp is currently Sochi's largest mall with over 70 shops, food court, restaurants, metroplex theater and a massive supermarket. Familiar products like Heinz ketchup are among less familiar items like fresh sturgeon caviar as well as mock caviar. One of the most popular fish egg products is the fresh salmon eggs -- a far cry from fish bait --- these eggs are beautiful in color, creamy in taste and delicious served with pancakes and creme fraiche. Also creamy is the Russian ice cream with a spectrum of flavors. Some outstanding ones were the pistachio and dark, rich chocolate. At the Rodina Grand Spa hotel which has stunning grounds reaching to the water's edge is the Black Sea Beach Club. Here one can, in the season, lounge in the sun and raise a small flag in your hand when wishing a refill of your drink. There is much to do in Sochi including the Dendrary Botanical Garden, the largest subtropical park in Russia. But it was time to make the one-hour drive from Sochi to Krasnaya Polyana, home to the Rosa Khutor alpine ski resort. It is probably the world's largest construction projects already topping 50 billion dollars. Besides the six new stadiums, there are new roads, high speed rail, bridges, tunnels, hotels, villages, a theme park and a new huge power grid to run it all. The Western Caucasus mountains surrounding Polyana are breathtaking. The snow is remarkable, especially considering that one is near a seaside resort. From some of the runs one can, on a clear day observe the Black Sea. In the summer the temperatures in Sochi can rise above 100 degrees with abundant humidity. Skiing on North American-type snow with brilliant sunshine is unique for Europe. The downhill courses are challenging and the mountain is served by modern Poma gondolas and chairlifts. They worked well for the most part except one day when a power outage kept skiers waiting for about 45 minutes. The weather above Sochi is very unpredictable. Exactly one year before the Sochi games are to begin there was no snow. For more go to the website atw.tv President Putin loves Sochi and goes to his dacha there as often as he can. It is where he gave Gerard Depardieu his Russian passport. But Putin wasn't happy about the building of the Gorki ski jump which has already cost an estimated $265 million and still not finished ... so some heads rolled. In Russia the ruling powers can move heaven and earth to get things done and at Sochi, that seems to be happening right now.

The War in Syria: Turkey, Iran, Russia begin de-escalation talks
Turkey, Iran and Russia are meeting for another round of the so-called Syrian peace talks. The summit is in the black sea resort of Sochi, Moscow's summer capital - better known more for its beaches than political peace-deals. The talks will be challenging - given recent advances made by the Syrian regime - that continues to target rebel positions even in de-escalation zones. Classic Lavrov vs. CNN (Syrian National Dialogue, Sochi)
Around 510 journalists have been accredited for the unprecedented Sochi Syrian National Dialogue conference, taking place on 30th January 2018; 78 TV channels, 38 press agencies from 27 countries – and CNN still manages to lie and distort in their usual style. The opening speech by Russia's Foreign Minister veered off script somewhat, when attendees expressed pro and anti-Russian sentiment as Sergey Lavrov took the floor. CNN covers only one side of the argument. Various factions of Syrian society have gathered in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi for the summit, aimed at laying the foundation for peace in the war-torn country and boosting the stalled Geneva talks. Nearly 1,600 invitations were sent out to a range of groups and individuals in a bid to give a voice to all the sides interested in a peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis. And no sign of a US delegation - whose General Mattis has recently claimed to have defeated ISIL in Syria on their own.
