Alex Nuijten - SQL Model Clause: A Gentle Introduction

49:42
The Model Clause adds spreadsheet-like functionality to the SQL language. Very powerful stuff, yet the syntax can be quite daunting. With the Model Clause, you define a multidimensional array from query results and then apply formulas to this array to calculate new values. This presentation will give you a gentle introduction in the complex syntax of the Model Clause and will show you some real life examples where the Model Clause was invaluable.

Hierarchical Queries: Databases for Developers #16

09:38
Often data contains a parent-child relationship between rows in the same table. For example, company org charts and family trees. You can use the power of SQL to traverse these hierarchical relationships. There are two ways to do this in Oracle Database: - Connect By - Recursive With Watch this video to learn about data trees and find out how these work! Order by in SQL | Order by clause in Oracle | sorting in sql

10:55
Order by in SQL | Order by clause in Oracle Use Order by in SQL to sort the results of a query by a given column or columns. facebook page www.facebook.com/learningseveryday Blog www.ethtimes1.blogspot.com In this video of Order by in sql , we will see how to arrange output data of a query in ascending or descending order . The Order by in SQL is used in a SELECT statement to sort results either in ascending or descending order. Order by in sql, is sql's way of sorting in sql. You can sort output of a query using order by in sql. Usually data in tables of sql is unordered form. Tables in sql are treated as sets of mathematics. In set theory , members of sets can be represented in any order. Similarly records or rows in tables of sql can be in any form. But sometimes we may need output of a query in ascending or descending order. ORDER BY Syntax SELECT column1, column2, ... FROM table_name ORDER BY column1, column2, ... ASC|DESC; To arrange output of a query in sql, we have to use order by in sql. Order by in sql is very easy to use. In video we had explained this concept with examples. Suppose we write a query as : select ename, city from employee; This wil list data on the screen . But we can not predict order of data. Suppose we supply it as : select ename, city from employee order by ename; This will sort the output in ascending order of enames because of order by clause. If you do not mention order in order by clause in Oracle , it will sort query results in ascending order by default. How to use order by in sql : Select ename , city from employee order by ename; This will list name and city of all the employees from employee table in ascending order of enames. You can also arrange data in descending order by using keyword desc in the query. Select ename , city from employee order by ename desc; please watch video in full length to clear the idea of order by in sql. You can also perform two columns sorting in sql, using order by in sql. If the content of the video is interesting, please share this video and subscribe this channel. Example: SELECT * FROM Individual ORDER BY LastName DESC; -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "PRIME Number Program in C Language in Hindi video" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0daznihE3Xk -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Part 2 SQL query to get organization hierarchy

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/05/part-2-sql-query-to-get-organization.html To get the best out of this video, the following concepts need to be understood first. These are already discussed in SQL Server Tutorial. 1. Self-Join - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnYSN_7qwgg 2. CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXB5b-7HJHk 3. Recursive CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGoV0wTMCg0 Here is the problem definition: 1. Employees table contains the following columns a) EmployeeId, b) EmployeeName c) ManagerId 2. If an EmployeeId is passed, the query should list down the entire organization hierarchy i.e who is the manager of the EmployeeId passed and who is managers manager and so on till full hierarchy is listed. For example, Scenario 1: If we pass David's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from David. Scenario 2: If we pass Lara's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from Lara. We will be Employees table for this demo. SQL to create and populate Employees table with test data Create table Employees ( EmployeeID int primary key identity, EmployeeName nvarchar(50), ManagerID int foreign key references Employees(EmployeeID) ) GO Insert into Employees values ('John', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Tom', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Lara', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Simon', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('David', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Stacy', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Sam', NULL) GO Update Employees Set ManagerID = 8 Where EmployeeName IN ('Mark', 'Steve', 'Lara') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 2 Where EmployeeName IN ('Stacy', 'Simon') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 3 Where EmployeeName IN ('Tom') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 5 Where EmployeeName IN ('John', 'Sam') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 4 Where EmployeeName IN ('David') GO Here is the SQL that does the job Declare @ID int ; Set @ID = 7; WITH EmployeeCTE AS ( Select EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerID From Employees Where EmployeeId = @ID UNION ALL Select Employees.EmployeeId , Employees.EmployeeName, Employees.ManagerID From Employees JOIN EmployeeCTE ON Employees.EmployeeId = EmployeeCTE.ManagerID ) Select E1.EmployeeName, ISNULL(E2.EmployeeName, 'No Boss') as ManagerName From EmployeeCTE E1 LEFT Join EmployeeCTE E2 ON E1.ManagerID = E2.EmployeeId

Ten SQL Tricks that You Didn’t Think Were Possible (Lukas Eder)

45:10
SQL is the winning language of Big Data. Whether you’re running a classic relational database, a column store (“NewSQL”), or a non-relational storage system (“NoSQL”), a powerful, declarative, SQL-based query language makes the difference. The SQL standard has evolved drastically in the past decades, and so have its commercial and open source implementations. In this fast-paced talk, we’re going to look at very peculiar and interesting data problems and how we can solve them with SQL. We’ll explore common table expressions, hierarchical SQL, table-valued functions, lateral joins, row value expressions, window functions, and advanced data types, such as XML and JSON. And we’ll look at Oracle’s mysterious MODEL and MATCH_RECOGNIZE clauses, devices whose mystery is only exceeded by their power. Most importantly, however, we’re going to learn that everyone can write advanced SQL. Once you learn the basics in these tricks, you’re going to love SQL even more.

Using SQL Pattern Matching with Big Data Lite VM

29:59
In this video, you are shown how to use SQL Pattern Matching with the Big Data Lite VM. With Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1), you can use the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause to perform pattern matching in SQL to do the following: 1. Logically partition and order the data that is used in the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause with its PARTITION BY and ORDER BY clauses. 2. Define patterns of rows to seek using the PATTERN clause of the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause. These patterns use regular expressions syntax, a powerful and expressive feature, applied to the pattern variables you define. 3. Specify the logical conditions required to map a row to a row pattern variable in the DEFINE clause. 4. Define output measures, which are expressions usable in the MEASURES clause of the SQL query. 5. Control the output (summary vs. detailed) from the pattern matching process See the Oracle By Example demo at: https://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=44785:24:0:::24:P24_CONTENT_ID,P24_PREV_PAGE:9540,1 See the related blog post at http://oracle-big-data.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/analyzing-our-big-data-lite-movie-app.html Copyright © 2014 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
