Why Did Disney Stop Selling Ticket Books?

05:56
The short and sweet answer is that Disney began to phase out ticket books for general admission passes in 1980 and by the middle of 1982, ticket books were fully retired. They mostly did it because… well… that was just the direction the industry was going in by then. There’s also an argument to be made that it was ultimately beneficial for them even if that wasn’t the direction it was going in. New here? Be sure to subscribe! 🔷https://goo.gl/x17zTL My Patreon! ❤https://patreon.com/RobPlays My Disney Podcast! 🎧http://ttapodcast.com Follow me on Twitter! 📱http://www.Twitter.com/RobPlays With the success of Disneyland, it was no big surprise that copycat amusement and theme parks would pop up elsewhere around the country. One of those parks, which opened just a few years later in 1958, was the Pacific Ocean Park in Santa Monica California. The Park, which came to be known as POP, wasn’t Disneyland's first competitor, nor it’s last. What made the park notable however was that after a disappointing second year of attendance, in an attempt to win over more guests and compete with Disneyland, switched their attendance model. They went from ticketed attractions to one general admission ticket that granted guests access to all the rides at the park. This would be the first major implementation of such an idea. POP would ultimately fail and close its gates in 1967. However before that would happen, another park in the US would open and mimic the same general admission business model, but with much more success. In 1961 and at a cost of three million dollars, Texas real estate developer Angus G Wynne opened a a theme park in Arlington, Texas. Named after the six different nations that at one point or another governed the land that made up the state, Six Flags Over Texas was a success from year one. By 1971 Walt Disney World would open to the public. Much in the same way the company as a whole was clinging to the Walt era of doing things, the Florida park opened with the same A through E tickets that Disneyland used. At that point Six Flags had just opened their third theme park, and just ninety minutes north of Disneyland a new park, Magic Mountain, would open. It, too, would sell general admission tickets. Disney stuck with ticket books, and they were essentially safe to. Their place at the top of the ladder in the realm of theme parks gave them the security to keep towing the line, but that wouldn’t last forever. By 1980 things were looking pretty differently. Disney wasn’t failing financially, but they weren’t looking too great either. Their box office take was stagnating, two oil crises caused issues with Disney World attendance, and most importantly, their competition was picking up pace. While Disney was just starting to work on EPCOT, their third ever US theme park, Six Flags had already opened or acquired six, and they weren’t showing any signs of slowing down. So Disney began to test the waters, and in 1980 they introduced passport tickets to their parks, which gave guests access to all rides at a flat rate. At this point they also began to slowly phase out ticket books. The first step was to remove the A through E classifications so that ticket books were just generalized tickets for attractions. However by the summer of 1982 those too would be retired. Something else happened in Disney in 1982: EPCOT Center opened to the public. For the first time ever a Disney resort had a second gate, and with that one change the dynamic of a Disney vacation changed with it. Disney quickly found that, as many would expect, the average length of stay for a family on vacation at Disney World doubled when the number of theme parks doubled. This meant guests spent more money on food, more money on merch, and more money on hotel stays. With that in mind, it became beneficial for guests to spend more time at the parks, and one way to accomplish that was to remove the limitations on how many attractions a guest could ride. Ticket books worked for day trips, but Disney vacations were quickly becomingly lengthier commitments. While they both played a role, I’d say the outside influence of Six Flags and other theme parks like Universal Studios was the bigger factor. The 1970s were a decade in which Disney creatively slowed to a near-stop, while their competitors only gained more and more speed. In fact that period of stagnation makes me wonder about whether or not ticket books would have been retired even earlier had Walt still been alive to push the company forward.

What If: Disney Still Used Ticket Books?

05:20
Today I’m taking a break from the history videos to explore a fun little “what if” look at the Disney parks. From the opening of Disneyland in 1955 until the early 1980's, Disney employed the use of ticket books. The finite tickets not only limited how many rides you could ride, but the A through E class system limited what you could ride. If you wanted to ride more after that you had to buy more tickets. Today I want to explore what it would be like if Disney still used those ticket books. Oodololly on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4luzbVKZVltD24PHrcrUAQ New here? There wasn’t any set-in-stone metrics used to decide which rides fell into which category. Generally speaking the E-tickets were reserved for the newer, more expensive, and more popular attractions, but it didn’t have to be all three. Up until the end of ticket books, the Jungle Cruise remained an e-ticket attraction despite the fact that it was a 24 year old concept with 24 year old technology. Still, it was popular. Meanwhile Mr Toad’s Wild Ride, while enjoyed by many, wasn’t new or technologically advanced or especially popular, so it was a C-Ticket ride. In short, the really clever part of this ticket system was that every year Disney had the opportunity to move around rides to different letters wherever they saw fit. Because they also had control over how many of each ticket the books contained, they could use the two together in order to try and influence how much guests visited each ride. Of course it wasn’t a tight control. Nothing was stopping guests from simply not using certain tickets or buying extras of others, but it was enough to influence most guests’ behavior. And, personally, that’s really the one perk of the ticket book system that I think we lost with the introduction of general admission. Now don’t get me wrong. I love general admission and given the option would pick it any day of the week. I think it’s the natural extension of what these ticket books were originally intended to do, which was to take care of the spending upfront so that you could spend the rest of your day enjoying your trip without constantly thinking about your wallet. Now as for the other parks at Disney World, well, they kind of stand as great examples of why it’s ultimately a good thing that these ticket books are a thing of the past. It’d almost be hard to fill a 12-adventure ticket book for them. Epcot has 9-10 experiences when you consider the circle-vision films at the Magic Kingdom were free. As far as rides the Animal Kingdom is also at around 9. Hollywood Studios? Forget about it. Point being you’d be able to essentially do everything at least once, and some things more than once which kind of saps the effectiveness of a ticket book.

Why Does Disney World Take Your Fingerprint?

04:58
A common question asked by Disney newcomers who are visiting the parks for the first time or maybe researching before their upcoming first trip is “Why does Disney scan your fingerprint?” So today I’m going to talk about just that. How Disney scans your fingerprint, why they do it, and what implications it might have on personal privacy. New here? Be sure to subscribe! 🔷https://goo.gl/x17zTL My Patreon! ❤https://patreon.com/RobPlays My Disney Podcast! 🎧http://ttapodcast.com Follow me on Twitter! 📱http://www.Twitter.com/RobPlays An additional thanks to my Patrons! 🏆Cassy Black 🏆 Mallory Craig 🏆 Heath Farrell 🏆 Braden Foster 🏆 Allison Ganzhorn 🏆 Rafael Gorrochotegui 🏆 Andres Gutierrez 🏆 Kevin Hitchcock 🏆 Matthew Hyndman 🏆 Ross Kratter 🏆 Christine Mahin 🏆 Nathan Peschke 🏆 Steve Ramsey 🏆 Mark Schuchman 🏆 Juan Sepulveda 🏆 John Shoemaker 🏆 Samantha Silverstein 🏆 Brent T Gleason 🏆 Shawndelle Young 🏆 Thomas 🏆 So if you’re looking for the really short answer I’ll say this: it’s not to track you or put you in some Orwellian master database. It’s essentially a preventative measure to combat ticket fraud, and it’s due to the way Disney sells their tickets. You see, Disney wants you to stay on Disney World property for as long as possible. The resort is so large and all-encompassing that every extra day you spend there is another day you’re paying them for the hotel, another day you’re buying their food, their drinks, their snacks. That means that in the end a five-day pass, at the time of this recording at least, would cost you $395, but a ten-day pass would cost $445. Only $50 extra. Think about that. Fifty bucks for five whole extra days at the parks! Of course there are all the added costs I mentioned like the hotel and food, but that’s the part Disney doesn’t want you to think about. Now if you do think about it, there’s a pretty simple scheme within that pricing system that makes it very easy to exploit. Let’s say I want to go on a five day vacation. I could pay the $395 for a five day pass or I could buy a ten-day pass for $445, use five of the days, and then sell the pass and it’s remaining five days to someone else at a discount for say, three hundred bucks. Suddenly I’ve gotten my five days of Disney at a net cost of $145, and some other person is getting their five days at a discount too. Everybody wins! Except Disney, and they’re not about to let themselves come out behind in this. So how do they Disney prevent it? Your fingerprints. Essentially in order to stop the fraud, Disney needs to link an individual to each ticket they sell. More importantly, they need a fast way to do it. Sure, they could match up names on the pass with the guest’s IDs, but that process is slow, especially when you consider that daily attendance to the parks numbers in the tens of thousands. So fingerprint scanning acts as the biometric used to match your ticket to you so that you can’t turn around and sell it to someone else later on. But how do they do the scanning, and should you be worried about your privacy? Well, as expected, Disney says you should not. In fact, according to them they’re not actually scanning your fingerprint. I mean, they are, but they also aren’t. It’s… weird. You see when we think about fingerprint scanning we usually think of something like this. A machine that scans an image of your fingerprint and stores it or matches it to a saved fingerprint in a database. What Disney’s system does however is scans your fingerprint and measures three points on it. From that they calculate a unique number that then gets tied to your ticket. What do they measure and what’s the calculation? Well, we don’t know, and that’s on purpose. The minute that info gets out it becomes that much easier to circumvent the system. Disney then dumps the scan and keeps the number. Every time you use the ticket after that, it makes sure that number still lines up. That number remains tied to your ticket for up to 30 days after your ticket expires or gets used up. And that’s really about it. It doesn’t go into some database. It doesn’t get used to track you. After all, they don’t need your fingerprint for that, they’ve got your Magic Bands. In any case if you still find yourself uncomfortable with the idea, you can choose to opt out of the fingerprint scan and instead show a picture ID to confirm that the ticket is yours. Disney obviously doesn’t advertise this too much because it really slows down the process of letting guests in, but the option is out there.

Our family consists of two sweet little children, Matthew and Hannah, and their dad and mom, Joe and Sarah. Our first family trip to Disney World was in October 2014. We loved it so much that we became annual passholders, and now we take trips as often as we can.
