It was an uncomfortable first kiss seen around the world and the people of the internet are not having it. Earlier this week American Idol aired 19-year-old Benjamin Glaze’s audition and it was definitely not your typical American Idol audition where a small town boy sings his heart out in front of three big musical stars on national television.
I mean, there was still singing involved, but the huge story that came out of this clip was the unexpected smooch that happened on camera between Katy and Benjamin. Before he started his audition, Benjamin shared with the judges that he had never kissed a girl before -- mainly because he was saving his first kiss for someone super special. And then this happened.
Okay, so there are probably SOME people out there who would have loved for this to have happened to them – and Benjamin totally acknowledged that in his interview with the New York Times following the situation, but still, the internet deemed Katy’s behavior as totally inappropriate. Especially since both #MeToo and Time’s Up are HUGE movements in the world right now.
One Twitter user wrote QUOTE, “Hi, just a friendly reminder that Katy Perry kissing this young man without his consent (he was saving his first kiss AND she tricked him into it) is a violation and assault! Joking about it is enforcing rape culture that tells us that men can’t be sexually assaulted.”
Another wrote, “Imagine if a 33-year-old male artist tricked a 19-year-old female auditioner into a kiss like Katy Perry just did with that teenage guy. Would we all think it was cute?” And one Twitter user called for Katy’s dismissal from the show by tweeting, “Katy, what you did to Benjamin is not okay. Women don’t get a free pass in the #metoo movement. American Idol should kick you off.”
As the uproar against KP continued, Benjamin decided to address the issue on his own Instagram page. In a lengthy note, he wrote QUOTE, “Hi everyone, I would like to clear a few things up for anyone who is confused, concerned, or angry. I am not complaining about the kiss from Katy Perry at all, doing a few news reports and being interviewed by many different reporters has caused some major questions... I am not complaining about the kiss, I am very honored and thankful to have been a part of American Idol… I do not think I was sexually harassed by Katy Perry and I am thankful for the judges comments and critiques. I was uncomfortable in a sense of how I have never been kissed before and was not expecting it. Please take into consideration that I don’t believe my views have been appropriately communicated through the media.”
Well, there you have it. Now that we’ve laid out both sides of the story in terms of Benjamin’s reaction and the internet’s, what do you guys think?
Do you think the internet was right to be upset by the kiss even though Benjamin felt as if the media blew the story way out of proportion? Let me know all your thoughts in the comment section below.
