EXAMPLES of specific Elaboration questions from MATH
You're studying calculus. The topic is “derivatives”. How do derivatives work? Well, they are the rate of the change. How does that work? You take a look at one point, then you take a look at a prior point, over some interval. And then you take the difference divided by the interval. As that interval approaches zero, you have the instantaneous rate of change. Why does this happen? Because “instantaneous” means that the interval is nothing.
Imagine you are studying neural communication, maybe in a biology, neuroscience, or psychology class.
How does neural communication work? If we look at one neuron, the dendrites receive messages from many other neurons, and then the messages converge in the soma. If there is enough of a positive charge within the soma, then an action potential will occur, and an electrical signal goes down the axon. When the signal reaches the terminal buttons, neurotransmitters release into the synapse where they communicate with the dendrites of the next neuron.
Why does this happen? The neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with one another. The pattern of activation among different neurons (which neurons fire, how quickly, what neurotransmitters they release) determines the message in your brain.
You might then ask, how does the axon work? The axon is a long tail-like structure that produces the electrical signal.
How does the signal travel? The axon is covered in myelin sheath, a fatty substance that insulates the axon. The myelin sheath works like the rubber around the cord of an electrical appliance, and it serves to make the electricity travel faster.
Why have myelin sheath? Because we need our neurons to be able to send signals fast, since we need to be able to react, make decisions, move quickly, perceive feeling in our skin instantly, etc.
Make sure to compare ideas to learn how they are similar and different. For example, an axon and terminal buttons are both parts of a neuron; but, the axon sends an electrical signal while the terminal buttons release chemicals. Both Schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease are related to the neurotransmitter dopamine, but Schizophrenia is the result of too much dopamine while Parkinson’s disease is the result of too little dopamine.
Also, try to make connections to your own memories or experiences, and compare ideas to learn how they are similar and different. We already made the connection from myelin sheath on axons to the rubber on cords to electrical appliances.
Here is another example: a family member or close friend who suffers from Schizophrenia disease is suffering from too much dopamine. This means that too much dopamine is being released, by the terminal buttons, into the synapse. A doctor could give them a drug to reduce the dopamine in their brain, called a dopamine antagonist. If too much of this drug is used, the patient might begin developing symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease.

Imagine you’re studying World War II, and the attack on Pearl Harbor.
You could ask yourself, how did this attack happen? On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The attack included Japanese fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes.
Why did this happen? The Japanese intended to destroy the United States’ Pacific Fleet so that it could not interfere with Japanese operations.
Here you could also ask another type of question: What was the result of this historic event? Well, Japanese casualties were light, while they damaged eight U.S. Navy battleships. The Arizona was among those that the Japanese sunk, and was not raised from the shallow water. U.S. aircrafts were also destroyed, and 2,403 Americans were killed (1,178 were injured).
Why is this event important? The day after the attack, Roosevelt delivered his Infamy Speech, the United States declared war on Japan, and Japanese-Americans were then relocated to internment camps.
You could then go on: how did the U.S. enter the war? How did the Pearl Harbor attack lead up to the release of the atomic bomb? How did the war end? And so on. There are so many ways to explain the idea and add details!

Hi Memorize Academy I hope you read this message and reply to it. I want to get straight 9’s (A*) at GCSE. I’m currently in year 9 starting term 4 do you think this is possible to do. I have chose Computer Science, French and History and I’m doing English Literature a year early so in May year 10 I’ve chose GCSE P.E. and I’m in higher maths and I’m doing triple science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) and I would love to go to Oxford University to study Computer Science and French. If you could can you give me some strategies you think would help and any other person who think they could be able to help me.

It's important that you don't get out of the habit of studying effectively and also that you don't forget what you have learnt. I forgot everything and only did average in school (probably because i was bullied everyday and wanted to forget everything). Now i am stuck in a minimum wage job, depression and anxiety and still living with my dad at 29 years of age. I am desperately trying to remember and improve my mathematics, so i can apply for an apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering. It's taking some time.
My point is, don't just drop everything after your final exams. This is just the beginning.
I’m having my GCSEs this year. What’s the best way to study? Is it effective to finish one subject completely and then go for the next or should I study a different subject every day? For example on day 1 math, day 2 bio, day 3 physics, day 4, 5, 6, 7 and repeat weekly. Also, is 4-5 hours daily enough?
If you're working effectively, 4-5 hours daily should be plenty (depending on your personal situation). Focusing on a different subject every day will work well, and if you're doing 4-5 every day you could even try two subjects per day for a couple of hours each. Good luck with your study!
IM always scared to get things wrong in tests and important exams so i flick through my Notes and get down the key information and read through it but it didnt help but this video help a lot and now i know what to do
You can't change what's included in those subjects, so just focus on approaching your study in the most effective and efficient way possible. Once you make some progress and build some momentum you'll start to feel better about them.
I have thirteen subjects. 6 from national curriculum and 7 from Cambridge IGCSE curriculum and in May I will have exams from 7 Cambridge subjects (21 exam totally). Every week I have 3 tests and every day teachers ask so...
what if i have 10 subjects and on those subjects there are 5 chapters, should i just study 10 days, 10 subjects with 5 chapters or should i break it down to more diverse like a day is 2 subjects with 1 chapter/2 im trying to learn for next month so i can get accepted to this high school

The Headache Paradox: It is scientifically impossible to have a headache, seeing that there are no pain receptors in the brain. Yet we continue to search for answers to what causes a headache, because we all know that headaches do exist.
Between a combination of the fact that our brains are roughly nothing more than a highly advanced mass of nerves, and that every function is controlled by signals that our brain sends through our nerves to the rest of our bodies, I think that if we could somehow make our nerves send stronger, more efficient signals at a quicker speed it would have a lot of different results. Including heightened sense (both physical and psychic) moving quicker both running and walking along with arm movement etc. The brain being just nerves would obviously also be effected, resulting in quicker more efficient thinking, which naturally would make us smarter, more observant, and have much sharper reflexes.
Some say that is an overly simplified form of how the brain functions, which it is. To them I say make the axons 12-15% wider, resulting in signals being sent much more quickly through the brain. Allowing neurons to create more connections without loss of speed, and the 10,000+ miles of blood vessels in the brain doubling as an additional cooling system for the brain. I could write a book on the cascade of effects that alone causes for people when they are changed in to a real vampire, however for now I will leave it in this simplified form.
